Remember when Apple made laptops?
I used to love them before they stopped updating them.
I'm always seeing history repeat itself on this forum, and it's like no one learns. Posters here say, "Why hasn't Apple come out with X like other companies?" or "Why haven't they updated Y like other companies?" But they also say "I've got X from this company and it's unreliable..." And then Apple finally comes out with X or Y which often has all you wanted and does it right (at which point everyone will complain about the cost or the look or the fact that this or that company did it first and what took Apple so long...without seeing that Apple has done it without the crashes or loss of battery or whatever).

My point is, post after post here says things like the Surface crashes, or doesn't have the battery power, etc, etc. Yet you're complaining that Apple hasn't updated its laptops. Well...see above. MOST of the time, Apple takes its time and tries to get it right. People complained about the phone not coming out back when there were rumors of it but it hadn't yet come out. When it did they complained that there were already touch-screen phones, this was nothing new, what took Apple and it wouldn't fly. But it did fly because it was the best touch phone on the market, the one that really made use of that technology.

In a nutshell: Apple doesn't usually rush things out, even an update which has to be a little more than an update if it's going to stand out as worth buying in a changing market. You can always switch to companies that put out new products faster. But if you want Apple, you need to be patient. It's up to you to decide if, given their track record, it will be worth the wait.

While Microsoft's ads are truthful that there's no touchscreen on Mac computers, their ads are just plain horrible. They're cringe worthy! Yes Apple did it years ago too, but at least their ads were funny and charismatic. Specially PC guy.
What is really funny about these ads is that most the macs shown are current....not really but not far iff :D

Again, people blowing their minds at what are simple, fun and specific ads.

Until TC reaches into his pipeline and drags out a new range of Macs, MS are going to generate as much interest as possible for the Surface to tempt those of us who want devices that Apple will never make.

But at least you easily CAN if you want. And it becomes VERY useful when, for example, you need to annotate PDF tutorials. Now that I have the iPad Pro ( +Pencil), I no longer print PDF tutorials / books for annotatig but do it entirely on my iPad.

(I had early Windows tablets, even with Wacom pen, before but the lower resolution / lower battery life / slower CPU / lack of touchscreen (while pen was, naturally, available) made them pretty tiring for the same stuff. This is why it's only with the large-screen and sufficiently reliable iPad Pro that I have completely moved to electronic document annotation.)

I wasn't speaking of the iPad Pro and Pencil. I have one and love it. When I was talking about writing on a laptop screen, I meant holding your arm in the air and trying to write. It's just bad ergonomics. I wouldn't want to release something like that and then have people get wrist injuries because of my product. But that's the difference between manufacturers who cater to people who want All the Options, and Apple, who tries to decide on the best options. (and yes, sometimes they fail at that)

Uh...thats all great if you want a touchscreen laptop/tablet...thing. I don't and not everyone would see that as a selling point... think I'll stick with Mac...

The iPad Pro runs a mobile operating system, whereas the Surface Pro runs both a mobile and desktop OS. I think this is the biggest difference between them, but one that MS does not exploit. If Apple put macOS onto the iPad Pro, the surface would be dead. However, I don't see Apple doing this anytime soon, gotta make that $$.
i have the ipad and the mac so I use both operating systems. I have to say that there are still clear differences between the two, but the gap is closing. There are a few things that I cannot do on the ipad, especially in the photo and video editing department. And there is the lack of support for true multi windows on the ipad. But I do like the app approach in iOS. And pixelmator i find easier to use on the ipad. I am thinking that 2017 or 2018 at the latests before I could go Mac free. Outside of the OS, I do wish they would do something about their iworks, which needs work.

My biggest gripe is the lack of a file structure. I can't make a "my documents" folder on the iPad, or a folder for financial stuff, etc.

I did play around with some of the Photoshop apps on an iPad pro, I thought they were quite nice.

Actually you can create the folders if you have icloud drive. I think they are pushing to store things in icloud. But yes, on the ipad itself, the file structure is lacking.

Yeah, but Apple (as far as I remember) has never used a comparison in their commercials. They simply show what their products can do without saying "ours is better than theirs because...".

Because they're funny and a lame attempt from MS; their dying kicks, so to say. :)

Really? REALLY?

Consumerism at it's finest here folks.

I LOVE having my SP4, 15" MBP, and iPad Air. I'm lucky to have the best tools for whatever job/need I have. Wouldn't give up any individual device.

Hold your judgement until October. If the rumor mills are anywhere near true -- and in recent years, they've been damn near spot on -- Apple plans to reveal a redesigned MacBook Pro with vastly improved graphics performance, and most likely some solid CPU improvements to accompany it. By the sound of it, it will be the quality update to the MacBook Pro line that we've been waiting for for a couple years now.

I don’t understand the cry over the lack of updates for the MacBook Pro. For those of us who use it for everyday use it is plenty powerful. I bought a 15” MacBook Pro with a 1 TB SSD and 2.8 i7 and its been the most pleasant laptop I’ve ever owned.

Microsoft will be the new Apple and Apple will again be 1993's Apple with Newton-like devices.

Surfaces are great but almost as overpriced as Apple's offerings. That ad was pretty bad though. The direct comparison thing is a bit much, and the guitar and song terrible. The recent Lenovo one with the Mac fan trying to come to terms with what the Mac can't do - that was much better.

I honestly didn't know that, I'll have to look into that. Thanks for letting me know, that may have just solved my gripe!

Microsoft should ask themselves why Apple's advertising is so successful. This commercial tells me nothing other than I can write on the surfaces screen with the included stylus. Nothing about this commercial screams I need a surface.

Apple are masters at making us all believe we need an Apple device. That's where the magic is. Not some guy strumming on a guitar and singing a lousy song.

It is so bad, it hurts!

How come that a company like Microsoft always seems to pick the worst ad agency to do their ads? Does anyone remember that ad to promote private surfing on IE, where this woman was vomiting in the ad?

Steve was right, they just don't have any taste.

I'd say nearly all ads these days are absolutely horrible.

Remember the iPhone 5C ad that was just a bunch of people talking on their phones... it could have been a flip phone from the 90s and the ad wouldn't have changed one bit.

Also... ukuleles o_O

Does MR need clicks that bad that every Microsoft Surface ad is a front page story? Microsoft is targeting the Mac with their Surface campaigns. We get it. Why does every new ad require a front page story on this site?

Did not see you complaing when we shown each of the "get a Mac" ads as a front page story from 2006-2009 on MR, we also got that apple was targeting PC ;)

Suck it up mate, it's a bit of payback, having a go at MR comes across as poor sportsmanship, if your are prepared to make fun of the competition , be prepared for them to do the same . Given the extent of the apple campaign ......Microsoft has years and years to catch up.

Ummm watch the "get a Mac" ads.....they were not even factually correct. They were successful cause of smugness .....sadly Microsoft cannot copy what it does not have

Over the weekend, Microsoft launched a new ad for the Surface Pro 4, continuing its marketing strategy of comparing the tablet computer to Apple's products, this time the 13-inch MacBook Air. The ad is the newest in Microsoft's anti-Apple theme of commercials, previously comparing the iPad Pro with the Surface Pro 4, the MacBook Pro with the Surface Book, and OS X with Windows 10. Just a few weeks ago, the MacBook Air was the focus of another Surface Pro 4 ad.

Simple titled "Get the Surface Pro," the new ad has a focus on the tablet's ability to write and doodle on the screen with the included stylus. Using the same musical accompaniment of the previous MacBook Air comparison spot, the singer in the new ad tells potential customers that "if you try to write on a plain old Mac, the difference can be seen. It doesn't work." Other advantages highlighted in the ad include the detachable keyboard, and the ending tagline states, "Surface does more. Just like you."

Microsoft positions the Surface Pro 4 as a true combination tablet and personal computer, leading to ads comparing it to both an iPad Pro and MacBook. In the previous iPad Pro commercial, Microsoft's personal assistant Cortana let customers, and Siri, know that the iPad lacks an Intel Core i7 processor, full access to Microsoft Office beyond the mobile app versions, a trackpad, and external port options, making Microsoft's tablet more of a computer than Apple's 12.9-inch tablet.

The 12.3-inch Surface Pro 4 starts at $899 for 128GB of internal storage and 4GB of RAM, and goes up to as much as $1,799 for 256GB of internal storage and 16GB of RAM. Comparatively, the 11-inch MacBook Air starts at $899, with 128GB of storage and 4GB of RAM, increasing to $1099 for 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM, while the 13-inch model starts at $999 for 128GB of storage and 8GB of RAM, and rising to $1199 for 256GB of storage.

Surface Pro 4 does not have GPS or GSM with SIM so is not comparable a tablet
