Now these ads I am just fine with and I actually like it. Good ad.

Now the ones that go and belittle the competitions user base and try to insult them are tasteless, classless and show little to no creativity.

I went into a Microsoft store and put a Surface on my lap. I'm one of those who likes his arms extended when he types, and I type a lot, which means I like putting the keyboard on my knees. The kickstand doesn't work for me at all. I realize this is a personal use case, but based on tagline alone, Microsoft will never sell me on the Surface till they get rid of that kickstand.

That being said, that's only a reason to not get the Surface. The reason I haven't gotten one of those other convertibles from HP or Lenovo is because I feel like Windows 8 only half works all of the time. I haven't found a task that it feels like it was optimized for. Does it do lots of things normal laptops/tablets haven't traditionally done? Sure. But I don't feel like it does them well, and at this point would rather use two separate devices.

But like I said, whoever beats the competition to giving me the voice control from the Enterprise will get my money.

Except the wife thing...

Got it.... and the "wife" thing certainly wasn't the focus of the commercial...:p

But the "wallhuggers" one is pretty good... pretty realistic from a product stand point.

I agree about the ones that show folks waiting in line for an iPhone as being pretty bad. Or showing someone's "parents waiting in line like that is a bad thing.

I'm going to get a lot of hate for this but the aesthetics of the HTC One IMO is much nicer and a better layout for speakers than the leaked IPhone 6 design.
I disagree. Sometimes I like to put my phone face down when playing music or conference calls. This would sound like crap with front facing speakers. Sharing music with others while I use the screen becomes more difficult too

Is this really how Cortana will/does sound? I think that's amazingly natural. Very impressed.

When being utilized for actual recorded responses (like, "sing me a song" or "how old are you" or "What do you think about Siri") it sounds just like that in the commercial.

But this is a commercial and it is simply Jen Taylor speaking about the phone, so none of what "Cortana" is saying would actually be said when interacting with the phone.

But in my experience with both, Cortana digital responses are WAY more lifelike/realistic than Siri responses.

I wonder if Cortana has as many clever responses to the question:

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

On a serious note, I've heard VERY good things about the Windows mobile OS. IMO it looks rather garish and loud, but I have not used it and the functionality could easily win me over. That HTC One is also sweet, and I bet it doesn't have a protruding camera.

Is this actually how Cortana speaks? I'd be very impressed if she speaks that naturally with such a matter-of-fact tone

Cortana does sound impressive, if it can behave just like the commercial wants to make you believe it behaves. Shows we may have some real new competition for that stuff in the market. On the other hand, I wonder how many people are simply just holding out until GLaDOS becomes available?

It's not PC plus. It's just PC. Desktops were the most popular PC of the 1990's. Notebooks, tablets and iPhones are the most popular PCs of the 2010's. It's not about that is more or less useful. It's about there are new types of PC's being invented that are now more popular than the traditional desktop PC of the past.

Right.

And "Post PC" is describing these new types of PC's you mentioned. Again, it's a disagreement over the definition of "PC" more than anything. I don't think I said anything about "useful", but there is a difference in complexity to the user and obviously "power" in a computer sense is going to be less in a smaller more portable device. "Post PC" is short for "Post Traditional Thing Commonly Thought Of As A PC" (classic types of desktops and laptops)

cheap ugly looking ****. yes they get people are tight and will put up with ugly frustrating virus ridden experiences to save a few bucks. yes they get making these peoples lives worse than they could be is profitable. yes they think this energy in the world is ok so long as they sit on their boats and dine in fine restaurants. yes they don't give a crap. yes they get rich. but we are here for apple who do get it remember

I'm here to choose the best product for me. When that's an Apple product, it's an Apple product. When it isn't, it isn't. I'm not here "for Apple". Nor do I have to have "the bestest thing ever" if it works for me. Nor do I have to insult the people who use things I don't use.

It's called being secure in your purchase.

Hey Satya.
Why don't you just call the whole post-PC mobile thing a "hobby" and move on?
It would save everybody a lot of time, trouble, carbon footprint, etc.

Why would you want to decrease competition?

Is it just me or has Siri become dumb in the last couple weeks?! Seems like anything I ask her, she can't do it anymore or asks for verification. She can't find my wife's phone number all the sudden or doesn't understand who I'm trying to call, even though she's done it a 1000 times before.

MS likes to push Cortana.. This is their second one i've seen here.

Rather than waste money on advertising trying to consonantly push a feature, no one would buy anything anyway from their store since they allow malware in..

I'm sure glad they have their priorities.... :p How to pay for VLC in one easy step..

The commercial ends with Siri remarking that she only has one speaker and that she is "sitting on it," referring to the speaker placement on the iPhone.

... right, this is important because standing upright is the most popular and fall-proof way to place your phone anywhere.

geez it was just a joke wasn't it, drawing attention to the fact iPhone only has one speaker. do I need two? no not at all. It fine as is and allows me to muffle it with my hand if need be. As a joke , as humour it worked very well.

Right.

What you say is what I mean exactly. What we have today is:
"Post what used to be a Traditional Thing Commonly Thought Of As A PC"
But what we call a traditional PC has changed. It's not about the desktop always being "the traditional PC". The traditional PC is whatever is used the most/most useful at the time. And at the moment iPads and iPhones fit into that definition very well.

I don't think you did say anything about "useful" but I did to help get my point across. I can see from what you said that you do get my point of view here. That's good. And I get your point. People still feel the desktop is "the traditional PC". And now we're in a post traditional PC, like this is some new and magical era where the desktop is a thing of the past and we've all moved on. Not so. It's just a continuous cycle of evolution. The desktop is still very useful, but it's main focus has changed from every day computer for emails and content consumption to beefy tasks that an iPad or average notebook can't do.

In 10 to 20 years time the the situation might shift again and we could have something else that is used more than anything else as a PC. That won't be the "Post, Post - PC era". It'll just be a new type of PC for a new generation.

Whatever you say. It's your world. I'm just in it.

But yeah, Microsoft should just call the whole mobile thing a "hobby" and move on.
Save us all the time, trouble, and carbon footprint.
Sarcasm noted.

Seriously though read the comment to the post I quoted above yours here. I don't disagree with the base principle of "post PC" I just think "post PC" really doesn't exist and it's just a new type of PC becoming more used and an older type of PC being less used. Continual evolution. What is considered a new type of PC will eventually be less used when something else is invented to that overtakes it. Doesn't mean the older type suddenly becomes obsolete. It's role just changes is all.

No. It's because when I use the speaker phone feature I sometimes end up holding my iPhone at a 90 angle to my face. Both weird and uncomfortable.

Most who have had that problem will understand the point Microsoft are making in the ad.
