I still don't get the marketing angle here. I don't know what this is doing for Microsoft's image, but I still thought that this one was actually pretty funny. There's just something funny about seeing Bill Gates as an everyday man.

Tearing apart these ads shows Apple users at their worst...

i think they're getting worse and worse. :p

Tonight, Microsoft aired the second of a series of new ads featuring Bill Gates and comedian Jerry Seinfeld. The long version of the ad (4m 30s) is embedded above via YouTube and a high quality version is available at Microsoft.com.

The first installment of the ad campaign showed Bill Gates and Seinfeld at a shoe store. The new installment shows Gates and Seinfeld living with "real people".

While we don't plan on getting into a habit of posting news stories for every new Microsoft ad, the original ad story generated a remarkable amount of feedback. Future ads may be reported on our Page 2 which is also linked from the left sidebar.

What the bloody hell are you on about.

We're tearing it apart because it has no bloody point to begin with!

An advertisement comes on television and doesn't tell me a single damn thing about Microsoft, Windows Vista or the joy of owning a computer loaded with software from Microsoft.

Again, it is a pointless ad that doesn't get its message across. Unless you have been smoking some drugs, the whole point of an advertisement is not only to entertain but to also inform the consumer of a given product and how it is superior to what else is out there - either by comparison, selling a lifestyle, or some other benchmark.

You need to wake up and stop pissing and moaning about 'Mac advocates', because you're starting to sound like a religious fundamentalist with a martyr complex.

I don't know if M$ actually intended this but I've read before that companies are sometimes willing to create a rubbish advert, simply because if its bad or annoying people tend to talk about it. We've all done, talked to our friends about some terrible ad we saw the other night. This acts as free advertising and helps spread the word.

And its clear to see that M$ has be able to generate alot of debate with their new campaign.

Have to say though if I ran a company there's no way I'd sanction a rubbish ad campaign. If a company continuously produces rubbish adverts, my opinion of them tends to be pretty low.

I think this ad is excellent!

Ha - what temperature is your blood?

But seriously, though I enjoyed it, I'm not sure how many people are going to see it, or the point of it.

Like an earlier post stated, it's certainly generating publicity for the brand, which will deflect attention from other brands.

Windows rules the light ventilation systems of world architecture [though Apple is the upmarket atria].

The fact that you two are arguing over the ads. shows that they are working. The first rule of advertising? Bad publicity is still publicity.......

Personally, I 'kinda enjoyed this most recent ad. It had an Edward Scissorhands 'kinda theme going on.

...inferiority complex...
Sorry, I just don't see it that way at all.

I associate inferiority complex with people who battle their insecurities by engaging in aggressive and shameless self-promotion and bragging. That's not what Microsoft is doing, that's what *Apple* is doing.

These Microsoft ads tell me "We feel so big and so secure in our greatness that we don't even have to talk about our products, we can spend 300 million on having a little fun with the brand and messing with your heads."

Apple's Mac vs PC ads tell me "We're pathetic losers who feel so small that we had to resort to the lowest and most despicable form of advertising there is: negative campaigning. Rather than explain what's so good about our products, we decided to stoop to the level of wannabe rappers who badmouth the competition by rambling on about "all you sucka MCs", or in our case, "all you sucka PCs".

Winners don't take drugs, and winners certainly don't spend energy on trash talking about the competition.

It would be only work if it had persuaded me to look at a PC; all that advertising did was re-enforce the fact that I would NEVER look at a PC, no matter how good it may appear.

Take the 'Utter nutter peanut butter' ad for Sanitarium, for example. It was voted New Zealand's most annoying ad, and yet, it boosted their sales because it was a jingle that was so annoying, people automatically remembered it. That is the the good annoying marketing. What is shown here is an advertisement which has been created in a vein hope that two 'high profile people' will mask the fact that they have no narrative that carry's along an underlying message of why PC's loaded with Windows is either better or simply (without comparison) a great thing to allow you the end user to do what you want.

You need to take a class in advertisement, because you seem to be absolutely clueless as to the purpose of it.

Then they are not going to work for you. No need to watch them further.

Of course the press seem to think they're doing their job but, hey, what do they know?

umm, no

I agree with the other posters - you guys don't like the ad because it is cool to not like it...and not because it sucks.

MS should just stick with what they do best - mimic another commercial, roll it into the OS and crash all other advertising.

Maybe they could digitally add Gates into Seinfeld episodes and hide the mac in the background. THAT may be funny.

friends sucked, Seinfeld sucked even more, and now we have an ad campaign that makes both of them look funny......

it was cool to like those shows once. and they still sucked.

it is cool to not like this ad.

maybe we are evolving.....

I have no idea what the ad is about. But Gates doing the robot at the end was priceless.

Vista still sucks though. My Dad was in town the other week and man all he did was grumble about his Vista laptop. I got on there to help him fix something and I got 10 prompts in 5 minutes asking me to allow this or that service. I thought, .....so this is what the critics are talking about. It was also slow as molassses and yet had better specs than my iMac.

You can wrap an old fish in $300 commercials called change, it's still going to stink after 8 years.

I know they try to be all cute and friendly in these ads, but it just ain't working.
These ads are too awkward and boring.

I'm not a Microsoft hater, but Apple is way better in Marketing and ads.

ya know i mentioned this about the first ad, and it still needs to be said about this one......

people talked a lot about the black death too. doesn't mean they wanted it.

this is like anti-advertising. it makes people want to seek out their competitor and buy that product.

.......great ad!

Why do I allow myself to get drawn into these things......

Let me guess. You're in college? LOL.

I own a successful company and could probably buy and sell you five times over because I have run numerous successful advertising campaigns. I think I know what works and what doesn't.

What is she doing under the car if it is a "blown head gasket". Wouldn't that be accessible from the top of the engine?

Slight amusing simply because I like Seinfeld...other than that, doesn't do much for me.

I am not sure how Bill is making these great claims for these "future technologies" when they have already abandoned their Vista OS and are trying to hype up and push the next version out so they can sweep Vista under the rug.

People who work in and/or know advertising are pretty much unanimous in their verdict: These ads are pretty damn good and do their job. I have a 12 year background as a content producer in marketing and advertising and I can only agree.

The mere fact that you think these ads are trying to sell you a PC is a clear indication that you have absolutely no idea what's going on.

It's Friday and work is slow. I watched the over 4 min ad to kill time instead of watching my cursor blink.

I'd like my 4 mins back.

This is not really an ad.
One of Bill's deepest desires is to not only act but to co-act with his favorite actor of all time. He just wanted to mark this off his bucket list.

. Seinfeld is a douche

Thats funny becuase these are supposed to use seinfeld and have people like gates because of his association with seinfeld. but instead they have the opposite effect and drag on jerry because of his association with MS.

Just as condescending as the Microsoft ad, but at least you were to the point and didn't waste 4 minutes proving it.

Just like Apple "abandoned" Tiger for Leopard?

Windows 7 will be a "fixed" version of Vista. Microsoft is looking at the mistakes made with Vista and revamping it. Windows 7 is much more than "Vista SP2", but not a whole rewrite.

It would take a lot of effort to polish Vista's (undeservedly) tarnished image - much easier to talk about a new system. Retiring the name "Vista" early is a smart move.
