+1 for boring and uninteresting ad comments (hear that? Boring AND uninteresting!).

I thought they both have been rather funny. If the campaign is meant to put a more human face on Microsoft, it could help. $ 30M just for Jerry is a big chunk of change though.

See, you guys aren't watching this series with a neutral mind.
As well as I love Apple (I really do), I also love Microsoft as well.
I'm basically in the middle and not willing to choose a side.

And I thought the second installment was pretty funny.
The first?
Not so much.
But this one was definitely memorable.

lighten up folks...

I thought it was cute... If Microsoft has $30M to burn, God Bless them. Now all they have to do is match the money they gave to Seinfeld and send it to Galveston...

It's not about not comprehending. The fact is, most people (their target audience) don't analyse ads. They don't look and think "oh... this is what it is... this is what it's supposed to be.. this is the point they're making". That point needs to be seen at face value.

At face value, they look like douchebags.

Precisely. Entertaining and ineffective - we'll all be talking about how human Bill Gates is and how primitive and counterproductive his products are.

I found the ad funny and charming, but of course not everyone has to like it. However, for such high-brow crowd, how anyone could not understand the message of this ad is beyond me.
And quasi-funny it was. Message - Bill and Jerry brag about how successful they are, are both recognized and praised by the delivery boy, and consequently stiff him payment plus tip for the meal. Bill is himself; a regular guy, a bit clueless, and unfocused - these are the associations we make of Windows.

I wouldn't call the ad a failure if it has induced 18 pages of comments, (even on a mac site). Aren't advertising and word-of-mouth related, after all?

Compared to 51 pages after the first day for commercial one, this certainly represents a sharp decline, so far.

The first one repulsed me because Gates came off as extremely full of himself, and it seemed very negatively ironic for the two of them to be scrimping pennies for shoes. (Also that tush move was nasty.) It really seemed dishonest and cynical. But the second one... if you give it your attention, it's much more tolerable. Mostly because the "secondary" characters are better and more focus is put on them. It still turns my stomach that this super-powerful man, Gates, is playing up his status as a famous person in an obviously middle-class/mildly lower-middle-class setting. But this second one is more tolerable.

But like politics today, it just makes me angry to see such expensive hype.
Especially when we realize.... "This? This is it? 300 Million for this?" "Give it time, but after two lame episodes, the audience will have already left the building."

Hmm...

Am I too stupid to understand what those ads have to do with microsoft and their computers or are they too smart for me. Hmm, in either case, not good :D
Seriously though, an ad advertisment should get some points across, do something, and they do a terrible job on that. I mean, even if there is/was something in it, it shouldnt bne the case that you have to analyse the ad for 5 hours to understand it.

Well, I disagree.

New Ads Announced

"The ads are part of a $300 million advertising campaign from Microsoft in an attempt to overhaul their image."

I think it's pretty clear what's going on at 0:55. So if quite a lot of people (at least here) found it funny does that not make the ad successful in its goal?

Although this advert was clearly better than the first one, the humour is very basic. Ripping off The Simple Life with Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie isn't exactly ground breaking or imaginative either. I hope for M$' sake they make more sense as the campaign develops.

Huh?

Am I missing something here. I don't see theses ads selling MS or Windows. The PC vs Mac ads Apple runs might be getting old, but at least they make since....

Hugh

I enjoyed this. One thing I am not a big fan of is how Mac goes after PC and PC never really goes after Mac in their ad's. Kudos to Microsoft. Keep em coming...

It was way too long for my tastes... And it made them kind of look like jerks. Staying at someone's house and complaining about the food? Classy.

Let me get this straight...Obama gets hammered even when he didn't make fun of "ordinary" people; Bill and Jerry make fun of them right out front. And this will make Windoze somehow more appealing?

I'm thinking a convoluted set of cross ownership agreements and subsidiaries between Pixar and whoever made this exist, and that Steve is really doing these ads to torpedo Microsoft once and for all.

These ads are so far pointless, artless, and not particularly funny. Bill, stick to curing Aids in Africa, Jerry, get back to being funny.

I don't get why people are so shock with 30mil in ads. I don't have numbers and I'm sure Apple doesn't give them out either, but from all the ad campaigns Apple has been doing, I bet they spend just as much or even higher amount of ad money than MS.

Oh my god I was so bored by the end of the first minute I was wishing my net connection hadn't downloaded the rest which I didn't bother watching. Can I get my bit download cap back? Like so many bad decisions in life you can't get it back, you just have to learn to live with the loss.

Well done M$, you owe me for that. Can I bill you for the counselling as well? I feel a migraine coming on... urrghhh

DAMN harsh criticism. If I were CEO of MS your comments would make me contemplate suicide...:eek::eek:

These ads are so far pointless, artless, and not particularly funny.

Whenever I watch someone who's seeing this episode for the first time, there's a chuckle when Steve Jobs (the old lady) shows up the first time. There's a laugh when he(she) comes by the second, and real laughter every other time he(she) shows up.

And, lots of other laughs.

You MacRumours folks are just too good at being determined not to enjoy this ride.

Open minded

I watched both ads. I didn't like either them because they are not funny. Bill Gates acting out of tough on the world. Then there is Seinfeld. I have never thought he was funny, so maybe that's my problem?

Although I don't see either ADs are going to give better light on MS or Windows. I mean okay what the hell are they selling here? Another realaty show, Staring Gates, and Seinfeld?

Hugh

Although this one was funny, I still have the urge to show this...
