I am sure that apple will be suing microsoft if this is true unless they by patents for it. it is one of the major add ons that do distinguish the os systems.
The something might happened to microsoft that is happening in the tablet industry.

You can bet the farm on it.

I didn't expect this. I would assume every major player would want to differentiate themselves to avoid confusion, just like google has done with the "android marketplace".

Maybe it won't be called App Store?

Stealing from Apple since the beginning and continuing to do so in 2011 and beyond!

Careful, sometimes it pays to be open minded.

I have a WP7 Samsung FOCUS that I pop my SIM in every once in a while. It's neat, but not ready for my full time phone. Has a lot of promise.

I can't, however, imagine this blocky themed OS working in any professional organization. Microsoft's key challenge will be making this OS adaptable to businesses. If it's like a computer version of WP7, they will fail miserably. WP7 works great as a social phone OS that's slick and interesting, but it will not translate well to a professional desktop OS for business.

I want WP7 to succeed and I (like many of you) use Windows for work. I just think MSFT may be trying to be a bit too fancy pants with Windows8. Careful guys...keep it relevant to businesses. Two versions, perhaps (Windows after hours / Windows productivity?). :D

What if Microsoft hits it out of the park with Windows 8? What if they listen the input of the mass beta users like they did on Windows 7 and come up with another great product? They certainly have the brain power to do this, the question is will they? Will they take the time to do it right and polish all the rough edges or will they rush it out half baked? Hopefully they are watching at all the tablet disasters due to rushing out unfinished products.

*sigh* Apple fanboys blindly believing Apple invented App stores. Linux had these in 2000-2002. I remember installing Mandrake, Redhat etc. and having sources of software I could get.

Keep believing that Apple invented App stores. Even Microsoft had an app store on their sidekick in 2001 or 2002 called Download Catalog.

Apple invented everything, didn't you know that? Steve came up with the theory of relativity, not Einstein. He built the Sphynx and the Great Pyramids too. He is one amazing dude.

Yay, MS is now offering digital software downloads. Whoop-dee-doo. Who cares what they name it? If I'm running Windows 8 and someone says "Hey, go to the App Store", I should be shot if I follow that with "Well, which one?".

Apple didn't invent apps or stores. I kinda just wish it would become a ubiquitous OS feature, like text editors and system monitors/task managers.

I honestly don't see this being successful unless it operates the same way as the Mac App store, where you download, it installs straight to your system with no fuss and updates just as easily.

You are right, neither Apple nor Microsoft had the first 'app store'.

Not one person said Apple invented app stores. Where do you see this?

Generally people who use the word "fanboy" tend to make things up...

How about posts like this?

I actually like the interface to Windows 8, but I gotta admit that Windows does seem to follow many of Apple's trends :p.

I'm actually excited by this. I don't care if it was copied. Why can't we have love for both Apple and Microsoft?

I often wonder what the point in posting articles like this is. It stands to reason that Microsoft would have some sort of Application distribution system built in to the OS.

This has nothing to do with Apple and has purely been written to insight the normal "Apple vs Microsoft" arguments.

And on a slightly un-related note, it almost looks as though MS is trying to beat Apple to the unified-across-all-devices OS ... Interesting.

Sorry, none of those say Apple was first, not to mention all those posts were doing were saying Apple implemented a store into their OS before Microsoft did, not that Apple created the concept.

They did say that actually, because in the post they said that Microsoft was following Apple, or copying trends, etc.

This is good news for developers. Lots of software for Windows.

It depends on the implementation. Too few details to tell for sure right now. If its hard to use its not going to be great but if its easy to use and easy to purchase from and update from it would probably be worth it.

Knowing Microsoft, they Will give it a long name.

Microsoft Windows 8 Program Store.

They call them programs while apple calls them Apps.

My reasoning behind this is they have Microsoft Windows Phone 7 Series. That's one hell of a long name.

Fanboys of [insert OS here] believing that Apple users are fanboys. Sad.

Apple never invented the App Store, and normally I'd say they were the first to to "do it right", like many of their other highly successfully products, but I'm not a fan of their iTunes-like app store. And the Mac App Store application is slow and buggy. I preferred the older iTunes interface that was WebObjects-based. The HTML version just doesn't have the same "feel" that Macs are known for.

But don't miss the point. The iOS and Mac App Stores are highly successful. So much so that the entire industry has taken to following in their footsteps. I'm just not sure why it took this long for controlled application distribution to catch on.

By the way, I'm also very impressed with Ubuntu's software update and application installation facilities. I haven't used other flavours of Linux, though. Even though I'm a programmer, I never felt that command line installation was terribly intuitive. However, I have a fan of MacPorts... it's simple and intuitive enough for me to use it daily.

Exactly! Glad you agree with me. They said Microsoft was behind Apple, not that Apple invented app stores like you originally suggested.

They all act like Apple invents everything. That's my point. To them, anyone else just copies Apple and there is no way that non Apple company could have been involved with it first.
