Good for them. They have the right to sell apps too. I won't be buying any of their products but I wish them nothing but success. You hateful angry nerds are pathetic.

It's the future guys... in 10 years most software will be downloadable only and cds will have disappeared. Then what are the non-Apple companies supposed to do in order to allow their users download any software? Of course, they will have to have their own ‘app stores’. They can name them differently, but the concept stays the same. Are we going to prohibit the adoption of such a model because Apple was the first to have an app store?

Yea we will prohibit them. How dare they do something similar to what apple has done? How dare they follow he industry trend. Our god Steve isn't going to be happy. We should burn Microsoft to the ground as an offering to our lord so he doesn't punish us. Think clearly bro, did you not get the memo?

For the app store to succeed they need to have self-contained app too, not installers, because it will be just another Windows nightmare.

Uh, are you kidding? Microsoft is just shoving Windows onto any device it can, and OS X is not going to be iOS.

Don't be so sure of yourself that OSX & iOS won't merge. Unless you're psychic and can read Steve Jobs' mind that's a naive statement.

I agree, in the past, MS did a lousy job of just trying to shove Windows into any device, but Win8 has been rewritten with a brand new UI that is made to span and scale across many devices. It's actually smart in my opinion. It makes easy for consumers and developers.

Super excited.. The UI looks great, and we're finally moving towards proper integration between Microsoft products. Good times ahead - I'm not buying any tablet until I see what WIndows 8 will bring.

Don't know about merging, but 10-15 years from now all operating systems will be very different that's for sure. It's normal to move on you know.

Do you seriously think it will look like billboard? What you see is just a layer for some things, but under it will still be windows (as in windows, not Windows).

Haha! You know, they could even take over the word "shop" instead. Just a bag, Windows logo and the word "shop" next to it. Personally, I like 'shop' even better than 'store'.

They should call it "Windows shopping". Works with that Windows icon bag logo.

Apple fanatics are very sensitive, lol.

I know what you mean, I am still a little hesitant about a few of the upcoming changes, especially full screen applications by default. I am not sure what Apple will do, though with Windows 8, you can have two full screen applications, running next to each other.

I also think that in about 10 years time, the typical desktop will be dead. You will probably have a monitor with a dock attached, for your quad core mobile to connect.

You mean like an iPad with a Thunderbolt port connected to a Thunderbolt Cinema Display and can be wirelessly connected to a bluetooth keyboard and trackpad when in desktop mode?;)

You say 10 years? Too long...I predict that scenario will happen 2 years from now. This will be the basis of the next major OSX release (again just my prediction)

Given this scenario, the iPad represents Apple's vision for mainstream consumer computing.

I agree 100%

I think most everything will be in the cloud in 10 years. There won't be much downloadable software.

It will take close to 10 years for the concept to fully mature and start to go mainstream, you would want a quad core mobile with at least 2-4GB's of RAM. The software is probably the trickiest part, monitors with mobile docks will start popping up in the next few years.

I remember watching this video months ago, this article doesn't seem to offer too much new info. I think that W8 would work wonderfully on what I'd like to call "Power Tablets" That is: Tablet computers, such as the iPad, which have performance more based on laptops. I've been waiting out for a very long time for someone to make a mobile computer that is pretty much a laptop, but with a touch screen. I had hoped that when the iPad came out it'd be a slightly modified version of OSX rather than iOS, but it's in the right direction.

I don't think the desktop will die for some time, I will always want a computer that is capable of handling my heavy duty processing application (Such as video batch conversion and editting, 3D modelling, FEA and gaming), no mobile computer will be matching these performance requirements (which are increasing all the time) for a very long time.

I hope Microsoft will use the term "App Store" for its, well, for its App Store. Apple does not deserve any rights on this. App Store is short for Application Store, Apple does need to be educated on this.

Microsoft are such copy cats, and I'm sure they find a way to screw it up. Should be fun to watch.

Every time I see an article like this, I really do want to give Microsoft the benefit of the doubt when it seems like they're following in Apple's footsteps like some sick puppy. Then I remind myself how they've been doing it all along. What they really need is some of their own ideas.

Agreed. From what I can gather, the consensus is that Microsoft is dying, or at least sickly. Their investors want Balmer to go, thats what i heard but if that was the case then why don't they vote him out. Could be just rumor but I don't see Microsoft as a solution to anything.

And to all the IT pros or other Windows boys, calm down, its just my point of view.

Do you seriously think it will look like billboard? What you see is just a layer for some things, but under it will still be windows (as in windows, not Windows).

We don't know that. The demo given in June was an extremely early build. Let's wait and see what happens at BUILD.

Windows users generally call them programs.

I see this as being a superior tablet experience in a lot of ways.
Especially for developers.
Imagine being able to run all of your applications from your Mac (Even the older ones that you purchased in the past) on your iPad
Well that scenario of supporting legacy applications is exactly what Windows 8 is going to do.

No matter what they call the Windows marketplace, it's going to be successful.
Some people are scared of a future where OSX and iOS merge into iOSX , but seeing the idea of this strategy from Microsoft calms a lot of nerves going forward.

The normal desktop atmosphere is still available....everything from before is still available, but now the OS has evolved to meet the needs of more devices and people.

And that's what your most likely going to see with iOSX.

I'm pretty happy with the direction these two companies are going.

It's like they are slowly poking and prodding each other into the future.:)

I actually think that they could work this into a great OS. I think they've made some good movement since Vista (non-inclusive). Office 2007/2010, Windows 7, WP7. I think that if they continue to improve, and listen to Beta testers as mentioned before, then W8 could be a really great OS. I think apple fans should welcome advances in the Windows OS environments because it'll force apple to keep advancing, and then windows will have to do the same, and we end up winning in the end with great choice for OS and hardware at good costs.

Very well said.

Brilliant!

"Window shopping" refers to the practice of "looking, but not buying" so this moniker may end up accurately representing real-world consumer behavior.

Well played, carry on!
