Why is another one of these threads necessary? The exact same questions have been getting answered for 2 years in the primary thread.

I started this thread to get a better idea of how prominent this issue still is (hence the new poll). From what I read, it seems to have reared its ugly head again with the mid-2011 refresh.

Hi!

I've just bought my first mac 27" i7. I was tired of incompatibility with my hackintosh so I jumped in the real world now! :)

Here is a picture of my screen. It's not that bad, however, you can notice a black shadow 1" from the bottom. I can easily see it on a single color screen I was wondering if other mac have also this issue. Other than that, it's working very well. Only cons so far was a big dust particule 3mm x 3mm that was behind the glass. I had to open it and gave a shot of canned air.

Hey your panel looks pretty uniform and grey!

I think the black shadow/line towards the bottom is pretty common. My first iMac hand it and the replacement does as well but to a lesser degree.

Yeah, your panel looks pretty good. tbh

I've been trying to ignore this issue, but I figured I better check it out before I'm out of my exchange/refund period. I'm not sure how I feel about these. Thoughts?

Looks good on my end...be sure to check it with different brightness levels (not full 100%...try 50%) and in a dark room.

Looks like I had no luck with my 27" iMac. I got it just 4 days ago and I will call Apples support tomorrow. Just to verify you see the same: I got nearly the whole right half of my display with a yellow tint and a slight red tint on the left side, right? Please ignore the moiré pattern that comes from the camera I've used.

I agree, there's definitely some uniformity issues there unfortunately.

If you receive a yellow tinted screen, what options do we have? I received my iMac 2 days ago and yesterday is the first day I got to try it out.

Are we allowed to get a brand new replacement from the Apple Store or will they hold onto it for a few days and try to repair it?

I really like the iMac as it is my first and don't want to be bothered by letting go of it so soon. I have AppleCare so can I keep my iMac and if the yellow tint gets worse in year 2, I can just have it replaced then?

if your under 14 days return policy and somethings wrong with your imac, you're allowed to choose either a replacement or refund and if you decided to get your imac replaced for a new one your 14 days return policy will reset from the day you get your replacement. i know this coz back in december i bought an imac and i got it replaced 3 times and on the 4th time a decided to get a full refund. now with my new imac im having some yellow tinge on my screen (i post a couple of pics here in this thread) and i already called apple and ask to replace mine and the guy did it right away.

Is it easier to just go to the store since you can get a replacement right away? Or do they send you the replacement first, and then you get to return the original?

if you bought it from the apple retail store than yah you can get it replaced there or refund but if u purchased it online then you have to do it by calling apple support and thats the difference between purchasing it online and going to your apple retail store. i purchased mine online coz when the time i bought mine retail store only sell the i5 and now i have to return my imac by calling them.

as for your second question, nope they wont give you a replacement with out returning your defective imac first but they place your replacement order right away so technically u can use it for a bit till they get your replacement ready coz once its ship it'll get to your place between 2-3 day and thats what im doing right now...im going to use this defective imac till they get mine ready then i will return it right away. remember this process is only applicable if you purchased yours online. good luck and hope your replacement is better.

Thanks for your detailed post. Now I have to figure out if it is worth going through the pain of replacing my iMac now or in few years when my AppleCare runs out. I like the idea of getting a new system rather than waiting for my iMac to be repaired but the yellow tint isn't that bad. Just not sure if it will get worse.

2011 27" iMac

Here is my 2011 27" iMac. My brightness is at 50%.

I'm on the fence with this. I will be doing a bunch of Photoshop and 3D work on this machine, so I'd like the display to be as accurate as possible.

I'd like to know if people getting replacement screens or iMacs are eventually getting the problem resolved.

your bottom half more to the right looks like it has the yellow tint issue. It really is a lottery game to get a good one. Some people are lucky with their second replacement while others may get something worse.

That screen looks fine to me.

Well after further investigation, I'm fairly certain I have the yellow tint at the bottom of the display. I bumped the brightness up a bit (I previously had it at like 1-2 bars), and it became slightly more noticeable.

But I'm keeping it, and here's why. I called up Amazon to inquire about getting the replacement process started. You'd think that return shipping would be paid for on a defective item, but apparently Amazon doesn't have the ability to do prepaid shipping on insured items. I would have to pay the return shipping upfront, and then be reimbursed. Thinking I wasn't sure I really wanted to go through all that trouble, I mentioned that perhaps I'd just keep it.

And here's where I about fell out of my chair--the agent advised that if I kept it, she could give me a "Defective, but customer decided to keep" discount. She looked it up, and was able to credit my card $400(!!!).

For $400, I'll live with some yellow tint issue that I have to really look for to spot! So I've got a keeper! :D

I wonder how many people would withhold returning thir iMacs if Apple had a similar policy in place?

your screen is perfectly fine. keep that.

yep, you're right, they wont send you a new one till you send the other one back first. I opted to pay for a new one and have them ship one out before I sent the other one back hence I had the 2 here side by side. I will be shipping the 'yellow' one out shortly and they will give me a refund on that one.

Yours doesn't seem too bad though. While reading these forums and as your eyes move down the screen while reading, do you notice yellowing or your screen looking 'warmer' ? If so, I would exchange it. If you don't notice it then keep it.

yah i do noticed that and it bothers me so much thats why i decided to get my imac replaced. at first i was trying to ignore it but now i know that i have yellow tint it really bothers me.

63% good to 37% bad, not very good ratio. Should be more like 90% to 10%.

If you wait morethan 14 days, they'll just fix your iMac.
