I didn't like the logo because it would allow bright light from behind the display to brighten the center of the screen. Very special use case, but it happened.

Ummmm, it's on the other side of the screen from me, so I never noticed it on the rMBP before. Makes absolutely no difference to me.

yes but requires more power from the panel display

No, it really doesn't. It's just the normal light from the LCD backlight shining through.

If it's changed to an OLED display sometime in the future of the current design, that would be different.

I am planning to do a survey on the train to see if my fellow travellers miss the glowing logo on the back of my computer.

I'm not going to buy it, just because of the missing glowing Apple.
I really love the glowing Apple...

I like the glowing apple and its part of what makes visually special. It was the little things that I always like about the Macs that helped draw me in. Like the happy mac when booting (now long gone), the glowing apple.

I'm sure I'll get used to it, if apple adopts this across the product line, but that doesn't mean I like the move.

This.

How can I miss something I never see? The only time I see the logo my laptop is powered off or closed.

In this respect, the change is great, as it obviously makes it feel more premium to have a shiny metal inlaid logo than a thin, translucent plastic insert logo?

Agree. The only "value" would be advertising your hardware choice to others...yawn.

Like the quasi value of rMB advertising your hardware choice to others. ;)

How so? I personally (1) don't like the two-tone (not quite the right word but you know what I mean) new logo and (2) do like the old glowing Apple, but in real life I never see my own computer's glowing logo. I doubt there's any "advertising value" built into the new logo. In situations other than advertising shots, it's pretty low key.

BTW, the display backlighting for the rMB is WLED, correct?

I am glad the logo is gone this should result better battery life spec performance because no power to drive the logo.

No power is used to drive the logo; it is lit with the screen backlighting so if the screen is powered, the logo is lit. It is not a separate led.

newellj, I meant the computer, i.e. the rMB itself is the "value" of advertising ones hardware choice.

Yes, I guess it is WLED taking into account its thickness and low power consumption requirement.

I had never thought about it, but if you did this with a display panel that had RGB backlighting, you'd get a very different result, I guess?

As the logo is on the back........no, dont miss it at all. Never saw it anyway when i was using my macbook pro. #

Most probably yes. In my personal opinion it is not a good direction to leave behind iconic traits, like the glowing apple logo or for that matter MagSafe. But that is only me.

I haven't got my rMB yet but I have seen in store. I would prefer MagSafe over the glowing Apple BUT I am prepared to compromise on both for such a gorgeous thin and light machine.

I have always wanted an Air but hated the silver surround on the screen. I was waiting for them to change that to black and then along came this new rMB which for me is much better than I imagined they would/could do with the Air.

Time will tell with MagSafe - that jury's still out. In fact, I am not sure I'd make any predictions about the overall lineup based on the rMB, beyond the likelihood of USB-C replacing USB-A soon.

I could care less about that, but its the look and feel. Apple computers were always different from the PCs from the very start. While many computer makers have copied apple (I'm looking at you HP), they had not copied the glowing apple. Its not about showing off the laptop to the world but just enjoying something beautifully designed and iconic as Ulenspiegel posted. There's less and less difference between an apple computer and other PCs (external wise).

Will that stop me from buying another Mac, no, but its just another move by apple that disappoints me.
