Update: For those of us happy taking many photos and using iTunes to back them up, don't believe that they are safely stored there - just check that your backup matches the images on your phone and that all are viewable in your backup / restore. You may see the message 'file type not supported' for .jpg, and 'file type not playable for .mov' .
Apple are apparently aware that iPhone XS Max users are having this problem of missing photos / unusable format messages and apparently trying to fix it. If anyone else has seen this would appreciate if you can share your story.

I would NEVER trust the cloud with my images and data. I do let it back up to the cloud nightly but once a week I do an encrypted iTunes backup with out fail.

If the stuff is important to you, you got to take steps to protect it.

Well it's actually worse than that - the backup does not work - the images on my XS Mas do not all get backed up, about 30% are missing. So if you were to do a restore, they would be blank tiles, which is not what I expected from Apple or iTunes

The cat has a brother named Rusty:

Wow, very cute ... and looks pretty close to my sisters cat (long departed RIP). He became cantankerous in his last days which was unfortunate, but was a great pet for about 15 years!!
