When they start running 3-4in. header-back or turbo-back exhaust full, and actually kick out decent numbers instead of wanna-be decent sound, well then they might gain slight respect, maybe.

I prefer another breed however. Go German autos, oh yeah :D
I whole heartedly agree. I went to some (illegal) runs in Oakland... these were trial runs to be inducted in a very exclusive 10second and under crew... Lemme tell you-- there were some fugly POS and I swore cops in 'frisco could hear us!!! So loud-- but man were they quick! One del sol had über sexy, get this, three spoilers; each one a different color as well as primered body panels.

I like German cars but I also can't get past the thrilling rumbling of a domestic. Anyhow, on the topic of German cars.. my bf's 1.8T Wolfsburg now boasts 3" turbo back exhaust that is quieter than stock! Talk about a sleeper... that along w/ some other mods; suspension, GIAC chip, Greddy BOV, intake... and can't think of what else... You can say that some 'flashier' car drivers get a quick pang when a 'simple jetta' pushes them hard. ;)

Awesome about the bf's VW, common about the del sol and others, not all that surprising :p

That is what I love about the German autos, they have a ton of potential (given proper model of course) and yet retain a luxurious aura and have some decent design features. Sure you can make most any car fast, but the Germans make them fast and good looking.
I have a 1.8T A4 and love it, although sadly have no money to kick into mods like your bf, I only with I could. I am saving now to get an '02 S4 (bi-turbo 6 instead of the new 8) when I graduate. That will be my project car and my A4 will turn into the winter wonder-carriage, theoretically. I might have to sell it, but I hope not. The new 2.0T is supposed to be just as bulletproof as the 1.8T, so I'm hoping for good reviews on that as well. An A3 with a 2.0T seems to have some pretty sweet promise.

Sigh. When I went to Europe a couple summers ago my jaw dropped at the sight of A3s and S3s... we don't get those beauties here in the States and as I drive a Cooper S; I'm definitely more partial to smaller hatches. :D Awesome that you have an A4 though. *drool* Nothing like those Audis... And don't even get me started on S4s; but I sort of prefer the last generation's body style but the newer body style is growing on me.

Actually, my bf wants to eventually retire his Bora as a track only car (and Auto-X)... His dream ideal would be to get a Rabbit and turn that into his other project car/ daily driver. I'm not too thrilled considering he would not keep AC and in Cali where it can get quite hot, yes... I told him if he dropped the AC he'd drop the woman, too. ;)

I believe we do get A3's now, quite the new development :D
We don't seem to get S6s or RS4s though, perhaps special order but the site doesn't list them as purchasable cars which is too bad.

If the car is fast enough and you leave the windows down, who needs AC?

No no no no! The A3 we get (by the way I seem to have always thought you're in Europe not the States; uh dur, I'm lame) is like, a full on wagon/sedan thingie... the one I saw in Europe was an adorable little hatchback. :p And please, the whole windows down thing? Only works if you're actually in motion-- not when the car is stopped in crazy parking-lot-traffic. It's also not as long-hair friendly (yes I have short hair now, but I've got to plan for the future, right?).

I didn't look into enough to realize we only get the sedan, the car I thought it was doesn't exist Stateside . In Europe (where I was for 3 months not long ago) there are A3 coupes (I think anyway, something smaller than what I linked to) and those are what I liked. I just noticed that Audi USA is only offering the A3 as FrontTrak too, which kind of bites.

You can just mount some fans in the window area and have them adapted to plug into 12VDC, problem solved  I sense this comment coming at some point:
If you really love me honey, you'll figure something out to make it work. (or something to that effect) (effect or affect  )

You guys only get the A3 Sportback not the hatch ;)

As for the mighty S3, that's been pretty much replaced by the 3.2 ;) the NEW S3 is coming though, hopefully naturally aspirated like the RS4. ;)

What's a Rabbit?

<edit> ok scrub that... it's a Mk I Golf.

The US seems to get what Europe calls the A3 Sportback while which is in addition to the standard A3 hatch. Both are based on the VW Golf which I think is what the US call the Rabbit. Europe also has the A2 which is a smaller hatch and the RS4 has only just hit the road in Europe so the US should be getting it soon I guess.

Back to the original thread;
The new Evo looks nice and I'd have loved it not long ago but at the moment I'm going through a green period and couldn't justify(or afford) buying one. I should be getting ~£12,000 next month to spend on a new company car and I'm having trouble with that decision. It's about enough for a Fiesta ST or Clio 182 but should I really be getting a diesel Lupo?

EDIT:Damn iGav's nimble monkey fingers! Two posts to make look redundant while my fat fingers plod opver the keyboard :(

Autocar wax rhapsodic about the 182 ;)

What about a Fabia VRs?

First generation GTI. I guess they weren't released in Europe as 'rabbits,' but here in the States, that's what they were called and they even had little rabbit emblems on the back. Can't find a pic of the emblem... but here's a couple pics of the car itself:

I officially love you. Haha, so many people don't realize that there is a difference between effect and affect. I just checked w/ the dictionary and I believe that in that context, 'effect' would be the proper word. And you're right-- I had indignation due to his 'insensitivity,' but if he rigged up something simple like the fan you mentioned, I'd be more than happy to sit alongside of him in such a zippy little car. :D

Long story but in Jersey one company bought up most franchises and I've had problems with them on several occasions so I've kind of limited myself to;
Ford
Renault
Seat
KIA
Hyundai
Honda
Toyota/Lexus
Vauxhall
Mazda
and possibly Fiat/Alfa as there might be a new dealership opening.

I remember you could get special badges for the Rabbit 'injection' models of two rabbits ****ing!

Golf's... ;) except ours have 'round' front lights, not rectangular ones. ;)

Don't they still make them in South America?

Mk I GTi's... still the cream of the crop. :D 'specially in black, with red pinstriping. :D

oh f**k yeah, I forgot... we've had this discussion before haven't we.

errrr.... the 182 then. ;)

<edit> and depending on them stocking Alfa's, how about a rev-tastic Twin-Spark 1.6 147?

Uh hee... Yes, golfs (to the rest of the world). ;) Actually, my bf prefers the round ones... I don't know about S. America, but I do know that parts are dirt cheap! He could get an entire Rabbit for under $300! And get a new block for something ridiculous like $50 or something.

Read that everyone? Read it? I am officially loved, so there :D

I'm saving that for some time in the not-so-distant future when you turn on me and express hatred. I'll repost it and remind you....and it will all be okay, or something

I ctrl-apple-D'd both words, but in the given place I still could not decide which to use. I am usually fine with there, their, and they're, and your and you're, but the E vs. A of ffect is still confusing most of the time. I like be stumped by the simple :)

Not only that, but the only A3 you can buy in the states so far is the FWD model.

Call me a whore for marketing but I can't see the point of getting a FWD Audi A3 when I could save some money and get a Golf.

I hear that Quattro will come with a V6 in the US-spec A3 so it will probably be a lot more expensive than the $27k that they want for the FWD turbo 4-banger. I'll bet it will get up near Evo pricing...

I would rather have the 2.0T Quattro than a 6, same reason I prefer an A4 1.8TQ now opposed to a 2.8Q, I like having a smaller engine that is more fuel efficient daily, but given a little gusto it will kick out pretty damn good. I love my car for that very reason and I am stuck on an mere 150hp/155ft.lb in the nicely de-tuned '99 version  Had I been able to find a 2000 I wouldn't have had to mod anything and would get 180hp/190ft.lb which is pretty sweet IMO for a 1.8T that still gets 30mpg on the highway :D

I don't mind the turbo but the lack of Quattro sort of puts me off the current US-spec A3. I can get a Golf 1.8T for less money and I would be happy with it.

If, by the time I'm in the market for a new car, the A3 is available as a turbo 4 cylinder with Quattro I'll give it a long hard look. The V6 Audi's are very nice but out of my price range.

Ford have missed a trick with the Focus ST... underpowered and crippled by FWD, Ford should have done the right thing and resurrected the Cosworth name, with 4WD and 300+bhp.

jeffy.dee-lux said:
ya, the ST looks pretty sweet, but it really should be AWD. I think the 220hp or whatever it is would probably be enough for me though.

Yeah, it would be great if it were AWD, but when you compare it to most other 2WD vehicles in it's class... I was thinking it would be great for the local rally series here in California (CRS Group 2). It's 220PS which is like 217HP, I believe (just did a quick search on google), and depending on the weight (which I wouldn't imaging would be excessive in such a small car, although the VW R32 sure showed that they can make them heavy) it should have a really nice power to weight ratio.

I would sell my kidney for an RS4! I really ought to take it off as my desktop background... I'd waste less time staring at it, whilst knowing that I can never own one.

You can get a Volks R32 right now that is 1.8T and especially nice tuned by HPA which is AWD, essentially an A3Q, but different styling. I LOVED the anniversary 337 edition, awesome GTI but still FWD.

I believe it was Car & Driver that printed the M3/RS4/Merc (??) review of which the RS4 won, but for $80k+ it hardly seems worth it....and I say that loving Audi! Think of a M3 with $30k into it....I bet the RS4 would stand still.

Some info on the new VW Golf R32 4Motion

http://www.autocarmag.com/News_Article.asp?NA_ID=217135

Doesn't the R32 prefix come from the fact the car has a 3.2litre engine??

155mph limited top speed supposedly..but I've heard other sources claim it can get up to about 168mph even without the limiter turned off..

Too bad they used the same piss-poor designed front end as all the other new VW's. I have to say I hate the new front ends, especially in the black plastic. The chrome I simply hate the shape, but the black just looks cheap and all-around shi**y
Everyone is making drastic changes that don't need to happen. The current Evo hasn't been out that long to already warrant a change, especially this drastic of one. The new WRX is a complete joke, and then the German multi-three (thank the heavens Porsche didn't change) are making their front ends look like post-wall impacts. Someone hire a new ID lead, please!
