Everyone is making drastic changes that don't need to happen. The current Evo hasn't been out that long

Best part of 5 years, the next gen Evolution isn't due till '07... it WILL be due a drastic change by then. ;)

Yeah, it would be great if it were AWD, but when you compare it to most other 2WD vehicles in it's class... I was thinking it would be great for the local rally series here in California (CRS Group 2). It's 220PS which is like 217HP, I believe (just did a quick search on google), and depending on the weight (which I wouldn't imaging would be excessive in such a small car.

220bhp is really about the limit for a FWD car (not my words) even then you need a trick limited slip diff to keep it in a straight line (something I'm not sure the ST has, although it's RS predecessor did).

If I was looking for a 200bhp FWD hatch, I'd be tempted by either a Mégane Renaultsport 225, or an Alfa-Romeo 147 GTA... the former because Renault know how to make their cars go, the latter... because of the Lamborghini Muira aping interior and have you heard one??? :D

I'd ignore the likes of Honda's Civic Type-R (lack of torque, oil tanker esque understeer, OAP image), SEAT's Leon Cupra R (too old) or Golf GTi (hairdressers car).

I must be the only one that loves the new look of the Audis and VWs!

I love the new Audi snout. ;)

I really think they've got problems with the rear 3/4 of their new design language though. The A6 being the biggest culprit. They took customer feedback on the previous gen A6 and ended up with a hideous hatch/saloon compromise that is just so aesthetically unresolved and clumsy.

The new A3 suffers a similar fate, and undoubtedly the next gen A4 and A8 will suffer too. :(

With the red pinstripe. ;)

Didn't know that would make 5yrs, so I suppose after a stint like that it is due, I guess. I love the current ones though....

Too bad we don't get Mégane, Renault, or Alfa Stateside (perhaps Alfa, not sure). When I was in France I thought the Alfa 147's I saw were pretty sweet, and lovely styling. If they were available, I would probably get one of those.

I don't mind the new Audi styling as much, but I think they slaughtered the VW line with that front end.

Whatever that means.... Is this something a teenager would understand? I mean Mitsubishi also makes the Lancer, and it's no hot car. What does "Its [sic] a Mitsubishi, nuf said." mean?

Mitsubishi makes crappy cars. What else can I say.

Tell that to GM...they just shoehorned a small-block V8 into the new FWD Impala, which accomplishes the near-impossible feat of making the new Impala even worse than the old one.

Neither available in the states. :( If there was one car manufacturer I'd bring to the US, it would be Alfa. They'd sell like hotcakes. I would sell certain redundant organs for one.

Boy iGAV, I really must be a hairdresser at heart because I like the GTI and the Porsche Cayman too! :p

I scoped out an R32 Golf at the Cleveland Auto Show. Maybe it was just that particular car but the build quality was awful. pieces of the interior were falling off, and the body kit had panel gaps big enough to crawl into. Maybe it was a pre-production car.

Overall though, the Golf GTI is still the best hot hatch you can get in the states. The A3 and 1 Series will probably change that, but for the money there's little else to be had - the regular old Focus or Mazda 3, Civic Type R (meh).

Oh and yes, the new Jetta/Golf is fugly. I seriously am put off buying one because of the new shape. Yech. Although it does look less ugly as a hatchback.

Ahh.. gotcha. Couldn't quite figure it out.. :) I really don't mind the Mitsubishi cars, like the Gallant. I used to like Mazda, until they partnered/were bought by Ford.

Why are all the cool cars in Europe? Grrr! I'm moving there as soon as I can :D

Seriously the best current model hatch you can get here is the VW GTI VR6 with 200hp. Then the only other options are the Civic Si (160hp), Mazda 3 (160hp), and the Focus ZX3 (136hp). Everyone is FWD, so if you even have the option of an AWD or RWD hatch then you got us beat.

What about the MINI Cooper S? :( I love mine and while it's not that quick... you can add a little here and there. Besides, I would make the claim that it handles better than a stock Si or Focus. What I would really love, is the classic mini conversion w/ a Type R motor dropped into it! Moo ha ha ha... a monster. Oh yeah, and the MINI one (diesel version of BMW's cooper but not available in the States, suprise surprise) has a great turbo kit that makes it a good deal faster than most Cooper S's out there while still having over 30MPG. I wanting!

I think anybody who says that about mazda is blindly biased. The new Mazdas are sweet! Their sales have exploded up here in canada with the 3 and the 6, i'm thinking the 5's gonna do very well too. I'd love to have a 3 hatchback, very attractive car, or the 6 sportback. Compare these cars to the 323, 626.... i dunno man, are you really that pissed off at ford?

Ah sorry, I forgot about that one. I just wish it had comparable HP to the GTI. In all other aspects it's a fine car.

I take it then that you guys don't get the Cooper S Works?

iGav said:

We do. But truth be told it's cheaper to do the same mods yourself. ;) I've got a reduction pulley (15%) as well as cold air intake... and that's all I can afford right now. Wish I could get new headers and full exhaust, as well as a chip, though. The only benefit of getting the JCW kit is that everything is covered under warranty.

The only thing I don't care for about the CooperS is that it is quite a heavy vehicle. In comparison to the GTI it isn't so bad (2680lb. for S and 2890 for GTI 1.8T) however for both I wish they would be lighter. Such small cars would be that much better if they would be lighter. I realize you have to have safety features and more supports for such a small car, but still, they are sold as sporty little devils, lighten them up and even without performance mods I bet they would feel that much sportier. The Evo is only 3200 and that includes AWD and all of it's added weight, plus it has substantially more power for the car. Okay, so I guess that is substantially heavier and also a larger car, but you get the point that I wish the other ones were lighter.

Trust me, I wish for the same. The saddest part? There is very little weight that you can shave down. :( That's why I wish I could afford some 15" wheels to replace w/ my stock 17"ers that are sooo heavy (the runflats don't help w/ the weight  ). W/ the 15s it would be much lighter and I'd have such snappy acceleration. Just gotta save up... forever. :p

I hear minimizing your unsprung weight is one of the greatest things to alter for feelings of handling, acceleration, general driving, etc. I sadly have no money to experiment and prove the theory right, but I have heard stories and from an engineering perspective it makes sense. You should get some magnesium 17 inchers if you can afford it, that would be quite sweet....as long as you have nice flat roads with few holes/road debris. If only money wasn't as important and valuable

Booooooooo, this thing looks almost as great as the new civic and is probably about as great at "clearing the fast lane" as well.

Common, nobody doubts that this thing is fast, but it's just so. Ugly. It's like the girl that bangs really really well. But has a god awful face.

Give me a cobra.......

You'll be looking forward to next year's Mini CSL with carbon body panels then?

It's the engine (and the looks I suppose) for me... what on earth were BMW thinking shoehorning in such a coarse unit

I've heard about that one too... now are they really using carbon fibre for ALL the panels or just the roof like the M3 CSL? it'd cost a bomb if all the panels are carbon fibre, likely putting it in Evolution X territory. only price wise of course. ;)

The long term durability is a bit sus for carbon fibre panels as well, especially on road cars, carbon fibre of course absorbs water... even with modern resins.

They'd be better off shaving weight from the overly retro interior first.

I doubt very few cars will be as effective at clearing the fastlane as this puppy. :D

Rinky dink link

Just took a look at this link again because someone else quoted it....and I got to thinking. Is this is the first production car (assuming the insiders were right about it being very close to the production model) that would come with built-on diffusers in the rear?? (not counting supercars because I know a few that have underbody channels and rear diffusers)

If so, that is pretty sweet, although perhaps overdone for the states where you can never drive fast enough to need something like that. I does give a rather sweet rear appearance though :)

Carbon fiber panels... yum. There actually is an aftermarket hood that looks just like stock (I love it because I'd rather not drastically change the appearance too much), but I mean, it doesn't save too much weight and for $900+ unpainted?! A wee bit out of my budget. I wouldn't mind taking the carbon fiber MINI for a quick spin though. *dreamy look*

Hmm upon second look... nah, I still don't like the way the new evo looks, still prefer the current/older body style. But hey, there are ways for people to drive fast enough in the States. Road trip to Montana? Highway 5 (really long, straight highway stretching through California)... and of course, track days.

Latest from Autocar is that the CSL will get lightweight body panels most likely the bonnet and roof and that they're still deciding whether they'll go carbon fibre or aluminium or a bit of both.
