Looks like the Marlins have begun their offseason splash...

Marlins agree to six year deal with Reyes

Not done yet either :D They are going hard after Pujols, and are meeting with him and his agent today. They are prepared to offer him up to $225 million. They will probably also land one of Wilson or Buerhle, regardless of what happens with Pujols. If they get Albert, along with one of those lefties, they will have the best hitting team in the NL, and will have enough firepower to go against the Phils.

Even with the new stadium and a potential bump in attendance, is there any reason to think that the Marlins have that much money to spend now? I'm skeptical.

Or maybe it's a re-run of their first World Series title year of 1997: load up on free agents to buy a championship and then sell them off right away.

I believe that they were also bleeding money from signing a bad stadium deal. So, they'll also be getting out from under that...which helps.

I do hope that if they sign all of these guys, they'll be able to keep them for the duration of their contracts. At least give the Phillies some competition in the East. Because they are ripe to be overtaken.

I still don't see the Marlins topping Philly...

Their rotation is way too young, unhealthy, and inconsistent. While they have enormous talent, they have a bunch of young power pitchers who walk a lot of batters and get injured.

Their lineup looks pretty damn good though.

SS - Jose Reyes
CF - Emilio Bonifacio
3B - Hanley Ramirez
RF - Mike Stanton
LF - Logan Morrison
1B - Gaby Sanchez
C - John Buck
2B - Omar Infante
P - ?

We'll see. Their offense continues to die in the playoffs...and they have had their own problems with injuries. For the Marlins, the pitching, as it always is, will be the key for this team. It could go either way this season. They are young, but now have another year of experience under their belts...I think they'll make a run for it at least.

Of course Jimmy Rollins is playing hardball:rolleyes: with the Phils. Who's going to give him a five year deal:eek: GOODBYE...;)

Marlins aggressively pursuing poo-holes, we should see a decision today. (Angels have also entered the equation) They will also be going hard after CJ Wilson, should be a very interesting team if nothing else and attendance will go WAY up at games as long as they are even close to contention.

Word is the Mariners are aggressively pursuing Fielder, but it's doubtful they land him. Talks still seem to have either Milwaukee, Texas or Toronto as landing pads, with perhaps the Cubs as a dark horse.

Where are the Marlins getting all of this money? They just built a new stadium, they had trouble filling seats in their old one (and I don't think a new stadium is going to triple their attendance for the duration of the season).

And of course, if Albert signs with the Marlins, he'll have to look at this ugly abomination in center field every time he hits a home run:

I think the owner always had money he just one didn't want to spend it. Plus the lease with the fins was horrible. Pro Player was the worst place to watch and play baseball, moving into a real stadium will help a lot.

wow.. seriously bobby valentine? :eek::eek::mad::confused:
Why don't you want Valentine? He is the best choice and will make it interesting. Managers should not be the players friend, they are their boss.

They made VERY little money playing in the football stadium. Now they move into their own park, and get all the revenue, which will be HUGE if they were to land a Pujols or Fielder.

You realize that if they dont get Pujols, they are going to turn their attention to Fielder. They are also in discussion with Buerhle and Wilson, so it doesnt all end with Pujols. The lineup projection is irrelevant right now, because they are not done spending.

I think the Marlins are going to be the biggest spenders this off season, they are out to give the Phillies a run.

Pujols signs with Angels

ESPN is reporting that Pujols has signed with the Angels! At 32, I can't believe that a team would offer him a 10 year deal.

ESPN.com said:
Albert Pujols has agreed to a 10-year, $250 million deal with the Los Angeles Angels, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney on Thursday.

The deal includes a full no-trade clause, which Pujols had been seeking and may have been a sticking point in his negotiations with the Miami Marlins.

Pujols had turned down an offer from the Cardinals, the only team he has ever played for, about a year ago, but St. Louis was still in the bidding as of Wednesday.

Pujols to the Angels.

Well, he gets a nicer climate, much higher cost of living, and in all probability the chance to play longer and to put up better career numbers than he would have been able to in the NL.

Sad to see him leave the Cardinals, though.

$250 million dollars for any single player is just absurd.

that's 4 years of the entire salary cap of an NHL team.

must be mass suicides in st louis this morning...

Nah, most people in St. Louis are upset that he's leaving, but at the same time, are glad the Cardinals didn't drop $250 million on a 10 year contract who is going to be in his 40s at the end of it. That's just way too much money and the type of contract that will hurt the club later on down the road.

We just won a World Series. We have Wainright coming back, and now we have money to go out and improve our middle infield that is so desperately lacking (hope the Cards go after resigning Furcal or Rollins for SS). As long as Holliday and Berkman can pick up the slack, and Craig can recover from his knee surgery and not miss more than a few weeks, I think we'll be OK.
