I really don't get the Angels. When they finally open up the purse strings, this is what they do? Break the bank to sign a guy who is probably 34 years old to a 10-year deal (!!!!!!!), and a pitcher that lost opening day, the All-Star game, the ALDS, LCS, and WS?

Albert Pujols has to be one of the greediest players in a league of greedy ass players. Did you guys read about that story where he killed a licensed, team-signed World Series ball because the price he wanted for his own signature made producing the ball impossible? I'll see if I can dig it up. It actually made me laugh.

At some point, come on, it's Monopoly money.

Yeah, I saw that. He got really greedy over the past season. They should release that ball without his signature, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I don't think anyone in STL would want it with his signature anymore.

Now you know how the sox fans felt when Damon went to NYY after we won the WS.

Has no one learned from the A-Rod situation? The Yankees are now practically stuck with a players performance spinning around the drain faster than you can say, "A-Rod". The Angels may be fearful in the short term, long term they will probably find themselves in the Yankees situation with Pujols.....

Albert Pujols, 2009:

Do I want to be in St. Louis forever? Of course. People from other teams want to play in St. Louis and they’re jealous that we’re in St. Louis because the fans are unbelievable. So why would you want to leave a place like St. Louis to go somewhere else and make $3 or $4 more million a year? It’s not about the money. I already got my money. It’s about winning and that’s it.
Cardinals offer: 10/220 million
Angels offer: 10/250 million
Difference: 3 million per year

And nevermind the fact that the Cardinals just won a World Series 6 weeks ago and were only going to improve once Wainwright came back. Greedy *******.

The Cards pissed him off by waiting so long to make the offer. word is he was carrying that chip on his shoulder all year

Angels are pretty much set... Fantastic rotation, good offense, great defense... they have depth on the bench...

They may have to trade Trumbo or Morales and have the other DH for a bullpen arm or two, but they look pretty damn good right now. Their payroll is in the Yankee range.

I kind of disagree except for the last part. Who's going to protect Pujols in that lineup? It's also a hugely right-handed lineup. Don't get me wrong, they're much improved, but I don't think they should consider themselves a finished product just yet.

Any time you're ready, Red Sox, feel free to jump in.

Pujols has shown in the past before Holliday and Berkman came that he can hit without protection... not to mention the Angels other hitters aren't bad.

Was it 2006 where it was like Pujols + Scott Rolen and that was it? The Angels offense will be above average at absolute worst with Pujols in there now unless everyone gets injured.

Only real weak spot is their bullpen could use some help.

Whatever. Fans need to come to terms with the fact that teams and players don't care about them. They care that we exist and spend money on sports, but that's all. If you're duped into thinking that players worry about what the fans will think when they move to other teams, then that's your fault. It's happened a million times before. You've had at least a year to consider the possibility that Pujols might sign with another team. And then when it happens, you get angry? Disappointed, sure. But angry?

He probably didn't sign with the Angels just for an extra $3 million per. I'm sure there's more to it than that. We can't be sure what happened behind the scenes, but it wouldn't be surprising if the Cardinals' indecisiveness on whether to extend him just wore on him. And we have no idea what words were said behind closed doors. Clearly he got to a point where he could imagine himself leaving.

My recollection about the rumors 9-12 months ago is that back then the Cardinals weren't planning to offer anything close to $200 million. They seemed to think that either no one would offer him that much and they would get a hometown discount, or that he would act too greedy and they would be able to plausibly tell Cardinals fans that they couldn't afford to keep him. I can't help but wonder if he would have signed an extension with them months ago if it had been anywhere near what he's going to get now.

By holding out on him and acting like he wouldn't dare to leave, the Cardinals may have created a situation where he no longer wanted to stay. Maybe they assumed that a guy who's done a lot of charity work and had enjoyed playing for the self-proclaimed "best fans in baseball" wouldn't want to be paid as much as another player might. But regardless of how charitable he is, it's not surprising that the best player in the game would demand to be paid as if he were the best player in the game. Especially since he's been mostly underpaid for the last several years.

Just because it happens all the time doesn't make it a) any less annoying, and b) any less greedy. Whether or not it's expected, it still sucks. The least he can do is rage about it on the internet.

I just get annoyed when players go on with the phony "it's not about the money" BS and then turn around and do this. I know things change, but everything that's been reported so far is that the Angels offer was only a few million more a year than the Cardinals, and the Cardinals were never given a chance to counter-offer. Sounds like despite the "I want to retire as a Cardinal" statements in the past, he had no desire to re-sign.

I'm just saying that if you still rage at things that you've come to expect will happen, then you are making things harder for yourself. And all of us sports fans should really be focusing our frustration on things that actually matter instead of which athletes get big jewelry.

I'm not trying to make excuses for Pujols and I don't really care where he plays. I'm just saying that there may be more to it than what we know. And it's very possible that he really menat it when he said he didn't want to leave St. Louis and then later changed his mind. And he might have a reason for leaving besides the money. Maybe he is just greedy. I don't know. Nobody does. But this is what happens when we invest ourselves emotionally in a complete stranger who plays sports for our favorite team. It usually ends badly.

If there was only about a 3 million dollar difference, it clearly wasn't all about the money. But that doesn't make it any easier.

As a Yankees fan, I would upset also if Derek Jeter or Mariano Rivera chose not to finish their careers as Yankees. Of course, it doesn't hurt that the Yankees love throwing $$ at people. :D

Reminds me of A Rod when he was with Seattle. Said he would never play for the Yankees. A lot of these guys talk different when the big money blows in the air.

Well...to be fair - he ended up on the Yankees, because the Rangers bankrupted themselves by bidding $100 million over....The Rangers.

And the Yankees, of course, were one of only a few teams that could bail them out of it. He was thisclose to ending up with the Sox.

Thank god we dodged that bullet. ;)

He's back...

Manny Ramirez has officially been reinstated from the voluntary retirement list by Major League Baseball, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney on Saturday morning.

Ramirez faces a 50-game suspension when he returns, rather than 100 games, the league said earlier in the week when announcing he had filed for reinstatement. Ramirez's 50-game suspension clock starts ticking when he signs with a team.

Ramirez already served a 50-game suspension in 2009 while with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and he had been notified that he was facing another offense last April when he agreed to step away from baseball.

He also is facing criminal prosecution in Florida on charges that he slapped his wife during a recent argument. He told investigators only that he grabbed his wife by the shoulders during an argument and "shrugged" her, causing her to hit her head on the headboard of their bed.

So what happens with the MVP award? Will they give it to whoever came in second. It's not fair to give it to Braun if he was cheating.

innocent until proven guilty. Braun is disputing the results through arbitration. When Pujols is eventually outed for steroids will the cards have to give back the world series rings?

Bitter?

Pujols has passed all PED tests so far. If he fails a test a year from now, that means he just started taking them and it had no affect on his past World Series performances. But this shows that Braun was taking PEDs during his MVP run. It's quite possible he would not have been nearly as valuable of a player if he wasn't taking PEDs.

And no player has successfully appealed a drug test result. Don't get your hopes up.
