Everyone in Denver was as well. Since they had just agreed to a 1-year deal to avoid arbitration, everyone thought at a minimum they would wait until after the Bryce Harper deal. A lot of folks were worried because the Monforts aren't known for inking big contracts and thought maybe they would trade him. Some speculation that he might be wearing Yankee pinstripes soon.

But you don't improve your team by trading your best players and he has always been a Rocky and the face of the franchise in recent years.

I was stunned when I heard this news. Glad they did it.

If you thought Machado's contract was bad...

Bryce Harper agrees to a 13 year 330 million contract with the Phillies, no opt-out clause.

So Brice Harper got what he wanted a long and large contract. What's odd is there's no buy-out or opt-out years. He's now committed to the Phillies for what will be most if not his entire career.

Seems the Rockies/Arenado deal was the most player friendly, giving him an opt out after 3 years.

MLB network used that deal as a contrast to Harper's deal. I don't think Harper signed a horrible deal, I agreed with some of the talking heads. He got the deal he wanted. He could have easily signed a large but shorter term deal if he so wanted. I can't help of think of Pujol's contract and how that is largely an albatross around the team's neck at this point. I totally get that Harper is much younger then Albert was when he signed that contract but the point remains, the long contract binds the Philley's for the long term.

I don't think Harper got a terrible deal either. Time will tell if Philadelphia did. Harper has never been a great two-way player and has been plagued by some nagging injuries. Offensive production will probably begin to decline in 5? 7? years. Who knows what kind of Bryce Harper they will have at the back end of 13 years. The list of successful 10 year+ contract to players at or near 30 includes pretty much A-Rod and Derek Jeter?

They also better hope that the National league institutes the DH in the next 9-10 years... he's already been plagued with leg injuries.
