I want shift restrictions so much, I blame that ideal, as a major reason why the game has gotten worse. It caused players to stop trying to hit the ball, and instead swing for the fences which in turn increased strikeouts. Plus it basically removed a lot of the strategy built into the game.

Since I'm griping about stuff, I might as well say, adding the DH for the national league simplifies the game too much as well. I enjoyed watching NL games over AL, because it made team/managers use more complex strategies in the game.

Well said. Couldn't agree more. The game has devolved into sort of a home run derby out of the necessity of trying to beat shifts, and I really, REALLY don't want the DH in the NL. I think it adds a little intrigue to inter-league games to watch the AL pitchers hit, and the NL toss a DH into the lineup. I like that the leagues are different, and don't think a one-size-fits-all, homogenized version of MLB is going to be good for the long-term success of the game.

From yesterday's talks. No further meetings are currently scheduled, according to the article, so be prepared for more of the regular season to disappear soon.

Guardians haters, did you know:
  • The new mascot pays homage to the Guardians of Traffic statues near Progressive Field in Cleveland, located on the Hope Memorial Bridge. Cleveland owner Paul Dolan noted ... (that) he hopes the name Guardians helps "unify our fans and city." The Guardians of Traffic statues have flanked both sides of the Hope Memorial Bridge since 1932.

Commanders is ok. Better than reviving Senators from baseball. But, I hadn't thought about the propensity to shorten everything. Maybe just Coms instead of Commies?

They are getting paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to play a game....both the players and owners. Huge baseball fan and this is garbage on both players and owners.
But it's their job. Why can't employers fight for their fair wage? It was the players fault for agreeing to the last CBA which was basically unfair on the players end. Owners got richer while salaries stayed stagnant or even dropped. I think they have a right to push what they believe would be fair compensation for the current and upcoming players in the league.

Weren't the originally the Guardians? Ya The more I think about it Football team really dropped the ball. DC Commies is not the nickname they were looking for.

Yeah, the Commanders is just bad on so many levels. But at least I won't have to hear "The Washington Football Team" any longer.

The most embarrassing thing about that is the fact that most players who seem to be subjected to them never tried/learned to hit the other way.

But I'm glad they are gone was well. But surely as an infielder you can still cheat a little one way or the other?

Wow...

Looks like the shift is a thing a of the past and now there will be a pitching clock.

Good!

And it looks like the NL will have the DH rule. I hate the designated hitter, always have. I also hate when my team loads the bases with two outs and the pitcher, who is throwing a gem, is up next. Baseball was meant to drive you crazy.

I'm ok with the shift being limited to "you must have two infielders between each base." That way the SS or 2nd baseman can only move over so far. And maybe they will say all infielders must play, um, in the infield. So if the bases get 1/2-inch bigger, maybe they can move the dirt/grass line back an inch or two. ;)

Pitch clock? Well, what's the penalty for violating it? What action constitutes meeting the deadline?

Same, they do this in part to try to keep people interested in the game, but yet it people who love the game tend to dislike the DH.

I don't know about penalties but this is needed desperately. Some pitchers take soooooo long, then of course the batter gets tired of waiting and so he steps out of the batters box, which then means the pitichers steps off the mound and walks around, taking his sweet time. The frustrating part is that, we repeat this again after he throws the ball.

Are you sure they never tried? Hitting a ball being thrown 100mph at you, just 90 feet away, is a feat that few people master. Asking them to change their swing in the hopes of pulling/pushing the ball, is probably unlikely given that they have maybe 150 to 200 milliseconds to decide to swing.

With the "three true outcomes" taking over baseball, I can see why many hitters are reluctant to stop trying to pull the ball. If you hit a home run, the infield shift is irrelevant. There's sadly little room for Rod Carew or Tony Gwynn or even a Willie Randolph in today's game.

I started watching baseball in the late 70s and early 80s, so I miss the small ball and the stolen base, starters who could throw 10+ complete games per season, relievers who could work multiple innings, and all those things. From a statistical perspective, I can see that the current offensive strategies are more efficient at producing runs, but it's still not as fun to watch for me.

I don't mind the DH in the American League — the different styles of play make it kind of interesting. Bringing it to the NL, I'm not very happy about, but I guess it wouldn't kill me.

On the other hand, the pitch clock is way too alien of a concept for me. This isn't football or basketball.

And if pitchers aren’t bad enough with their routines…remember the “Human Rain Delay”? Some batters have crazy long routines between every pitch too.

Looks like no progress will be made. I read a tweet from Passan saying a hang up was regarding the International Draft. But it looks like there's more issues that hasn't been resolved.

I'm just going to wait until I see an official agreement is made. This sucks.

Not really. They are paid hundreds of thousand of dollars to be in the top 0.5% of their category and to convince other people - such me and you - to pay and use their free time in order to see them, and also to convince sponsors to pay them so that other people are convinced to buy the sponsored product. If you think about, it’s not an easy feat to pull at all, especially by doing something as inconsequential as playing a game.

It’s either going to be a very short season, or no season at all…

BTW I like the shift ban, not entirely convinced by the pitching clock.

I believe it will be a shortened season. In some ways the acrimony, bitterness, and lack of compromise is reminicient of the negotiations in 2020 to salvage the season. I forget details, but from my hazy memory, it seemed MLB wanted a lot of concessions and power and the MLBPA refused. A number of talking heads had mentioned that this is a portend of the CBA negotiations. So far that seems to be on the mark.

One thing in the players corner (for the time being) is that they're united and all believe the prior CBA was a horrible deal for them, and their shrinking contracts, tanking, and service time manipulation all seem to cemented their resolve. Time is money and as game checks are forfeited, only time will tell as to the players mettle on this.

I'm sure Bonds never did. Plus isn't the mound 6o feet away?
