MMS and Cellular Data not working at all *SOLVED*

I have completely fixed this problem without losing ANYTHING.
I already posted this here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2470873&tstart=0 but i'll copy and paste it here as well.

Restore your phone back to it's broken state where you have ALL THE DATA YOU WANT TO KEEP!

------------
First, let me summarize the problem and briefly address the known solutions. There are multiple issues people are having with the update that -HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH OUR PROBLEM-. Some people had theirs in airplane mode which apparently gives them a "no sim card" after update. not our problem. Some people can reset settings not our problem.

Our problem is corrupt APN settings after an upgrade, which can be worked around by installing mobileconfig updates or using the "iPhone Configuration Utility" to temporarily overwrite our APN settings. This is a temp fix that only makes 3g work, no MMS or Visual Voicemail.

We know that completely restoring the phone and setting it up as new resolves the problem. A lot of us are unable to restore any backups without re-introducing the bug. A lot of us do not want to lose our app data so setting up as new phone is out of the question. Some people have figured out how to set up as new phone and import SMS messages from corrupt backup to new backup. This is a good solution if SMS is the only thing you want…However, some of us want ALL our app data.

Now for the solution! First, go in to settings on your phone and uninstall any custom profile you may have installed to temporarily fix the APN.

Now, perform a full backup of your phone (you may want to delete your previous backups or move them out of the directory so that you're not confused with multiple backup files in your backup directory.

Go to your backup directory ~/Library/Application\ Support/MobileSync/Backup/random-backup-name-here/ and delete this file 8218978e4ab0a48035bb92653145a6be872ea858
That file contains our corrupted APN information.

Now RESTORE YOUR PHONE and restore the backup. It will fully restore and then give you an error, ignore the error, it worked. Sync your phone to get all your apps back. 3g works, visual voicemail works, mms works, and i have ALL of my app data! all my contacts, all my photos, all my sms messages! BAM! I RULE!
If for some reason you don't have that file in your backup directory (i have no idea, maybe they are named differently with different backups) you can find it by entering the backup directory in the terminal and running the following

for i in * ; do echo "checking $i" ; strings $i | grep -i com.apple ; done >> output.txt

open output.txt and search for CommCenter you'll see something like
checking 8218978e4ab0a48035bb92653145a6be872ea858
<string>com.apple.CommCenter</string>

The file above "<string>com.apple.CommCenter</string>" is the file you want to delete.

This did not work for me at all... :(

Can you elaborate? Lots of people are reporting success. So far the only people that aren't can't seem to read instructions.

Are you sure you had the same problem that we have? Did you **WIPE AND RESTORE THE PHONE PRIOR TO RESTORING THE BACKUP?!** That part is very important. 3g/edge/visualvoicemail/mms must be working BEFORE you restore the backup. This solution doesn't "fix" anything, it just prevents the backup process from breaking it again after it was fixed via wipe/restore.

When you restore your phone in itunes (before syncing or copying any data back) does edge/3g work? It should, if it doesn't you have a different problem. Once edge/3g is working you can then restore the backup minus that file and it should continue working. Did you do any of that? Or did you simply make a backup, delete the file, restore the backup, expect it to work?

That could be my issue, I did wipe and do a clean restore but I didn't have the SIM card in prior to restoring the backup so the APN might not have downloaded. I'm worried I'll recieve a phone call or TXT and have the backup overwrite it. I guess I'll have to risk it with the SIM card in... Thanks. I'll test and report back when I can.

It's worth a shot I'd be interested to know. When I did mine I opened it up and used 3g for a minute to make sure it was working and then restored. I was so happy to see "you have a new voicemail" pop up after the restore!

Well I'm trying it right now... Do you also know how to fix the black thumbnail issue in the Photos App after restoring a backup? All of my camera roll photos are black unless I open them. Newly taken photos are ok? Is there some way to have the Photos app rebuild it's library?

I can let you know all was working except MMS, the second I reset network settings, 3G was down again. This was on my first restore attempt.

I restored the backup on a freshly restored iPhone 3GS and my MMS disappeared again. Cellular data seems to be working but my "Carrier" under about says "Not Available" so I'm not sure what is going on. Now that my backup is restored I'm trying a software update manually.

Just tried this, everything works except for mms... anyone get their mms back using this method?

edit: upon resetting network settings, cellular data is broken again

You're in a similar boat to me... I'm working on a new method that might fix it.

From digging around and testing stuff the Cellular Data and MMS seem to be located in the files titled "Manifest", sadly this also includes all of our Application Data. I'm working on a way to remove just the corrupt Cellular Data, MMS, and VVM settings.

I actually restored both to my phone!

My 3GS was jailbroken with spirit... like most, when I went to download the iOS4, I lost MMS and data. After several "restore" attempts, I finally got the thing to work.

Here's what I did (I think).

I restored the phone connected to ITunes.
When the software was done installing and before it synced anything or got to the Backup screen, I disconnected it from Itunes. I let it reset and do it's thing. Made sure MMS and 3G data were working. Then I connected to iTunes. I chose to Restore from "New" and made sure nothing was set to sync. I also changed the name of my phone to something different from the old name.

When that finished, I disconnected and closed I tunes again. I then set it to sync apps.

it all worked. How, I don't know. But it worked. Thank God.

Based on the method you have said, your data is now gone, you have no photos in camera roll, all your texts are gone, all of your settings are at factory default. If you selected configure as new iPhone I hope you have backed up your "MobileSync" folder otherwise all of your old backups have been permiantly deleted and you'll be SOL if you need them.

and you lost everything like ... recent calls and text messages ... history and ****... not looking to do that.. Apple gotta step there game up.

Does this affect anybody's FaceTime? I'm no longer getting the FaceTime button in calls.

iPhone Cellular Data, MMS, & VVM Fix

MAJOR UPDATE: Verified by me as compatible with iPhone 4 FaceTime, MMS, and VVM bug in JailbreakMe.com.

Ok guys, here it is another new fix that covers it all while maintaining your data. (CAUTION: Photos from the camera roll will not work after this method is complete so please back them up to the computer first. I'm not responsible if you lose your pictures.

This method is based off of dankirsh's SMS Restore method (Only fixes Cellular Data), loveturtle's Non-Corrupted APN Restore method (Only fixes Cellular Data), and my own unique concepts which seem to fix everything and keep data intact minus the photo roll.

Step 1:
Windows Users: Navigate to "X:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup"
Mac Users: Navigate to "~/Library/Application\ Support/MobileSync/Backup/"
NOTE: "X:" is the drive you installed Windows on and "User Name" is the name of your account on Windows.

Step 2:
Move all Backup files to another location to make sure the entire folder is empty.

Step 3:
Plug in your iPhone and perform a full backup.

Step 4:
After backup completes, disconnect the iPhone and copy the new folder under the backup directory to a separate location perferably named "Old" for ease of use.

Step 5:
After folder completes the copying delete it from the backup directory, NOT THE NEW LOCATION.

Step 6:
Plug in your iPhone and perform a full restore.

Step 7:
Upon completion of restore if iTunes asks to restore from a backup that you select a new configuration. While configuring the iPhone for new settings uncheck all sync boxes including Applications and Data. <-- (IMPORTANT)

Step 8:
Right click the iPhone and backup the iPhone.

Step 9:
Upon backup completion copy the new backup folder out of the previously mentioned location and copy it to a folder called "New".

Step 10:
Delete the backup that was recently created in the Backup folder.

Step 11:
Copy the backup located in the previously created "Old" folder to the Backup folder.

Step 12:
Upon completion of the copy go into the randomly named folder and delete a file named "8218978e4ab0a48035bb92653145a6be872ea858", then right click the iPhone in iTunes and select "Restore from Backup" and select "Ok" since this is the only backup in the folder.

Step 13:
Upon backup restoration completion let your iPhone sync itself with the computer and restore all of your applications. (At this point all is back to what it was like at the beginning of Step 1.)

Step 14:
After all of your Applications are synced navigate into the "New" folder and into the backup folder located inside of it, it will be named as a random string of numbers and letters.

Step 15:
Copy and overwrite the following files from the randomly named backup in the "New" folder to the "MobileSync\Backup\Randomly Named Backup" folder; "Manifest.mbdb", "Manifest.mbdx", and "Manifest.plist", they are located near the very bottom if sorted by name.

Step 16:
In iTunes right click the iPhone and "Restore Backup" once again since this is the only backup available, click ok.

Step 17:
iTunes will display an error and reboot the iPhone, this is normal.

Step 18:
Upon boot of the iPhone, check your Cellular Data, MMS, and VVM to verify all is working fine.

Step 19:
If all is working, delete any backup located in the "MobileSync" folder and perform a full backup again. As stated before, your camera roll will not work anymore for your old files. The files appear to be present on the iPhone but are corrupt and will be overwritten when a new photo is taken.

Enjoy your fully functioning iPhone once again and please keep your OLD backup files as I am not sure if the App Data will backup now. I will have to continue more testing with this.

FINAL NOTE: Resetting network settings did not break my iPhone after completing this method.

Update #1: Reports from a few users are indicating this method does work for the iPhone 4 and does fix Face Time. See post #68, #69, and #71 for more information.

Update #2: Verified by me as compatible with iPhone 4 FaceTime, MMS, and VVM bug in JailbreakMe.com.

Should Step 14 say navigate into the "New" folder? or Step 15 "Old"?

It work's.... copy the files from the NEW backup into the into the MobileSync folder random sting folder.

Create an untouched copy of your backup before you go swapping files though..

I did not experience this issue so I have no idea how to fix your problem... I'm very quickly testing a method to restore photos again.

cool so i guess ill try it all again then.
it basically wont let me restore or back up due to corrupt files or invalid version yet i had it all down sweet

I installed 4.0 from 3.1.3 on my 3GS and there is no MMS button in the messaging app, and there is no mms settings in the settings app.

My 3G/Edge/GPRS do not seem to be working either.

I have tried hard resettings, resetting my network settings and neither work.

If I restore to factory settings it all works fine but once I restore from my backup they all stop again...

I really don't want o have to set up as a new iPhone and lose all my settings any ideas?

Yeah this happened to me too on Monday! My phone was JB too. (Spirit) I had to set up as a new phone restore and sync all my apps and music back witch took forever!! smh lol

ok i'm on my new iphone 4 and all of the problems like no MMS, no facetime and no voicemail are still here...

i followed the first few steps and when i got to the "restore your phone as a new phone" step itunes is now downloading iphone firmware 4.0...

to fully dowload 4.0 it will take hours (3 to be exact) is there any way i can just DFU my phone or something to skip the whole "download firmware 4.0" step?

i know that the iphone 4 already comes pre-installed with 4.0... so there shouldnt be a problem... right?
