Try doing the method I posted on page 2. Someone else had this issue on their iPhone 4 and was able to fix it as well. I believe he did report issues with the proximity sensor still but Face Time did come back up according to him. His post is on page 3.

Folks, I'm really glad to see majority of you are having success with my method. I'm glad I could be of help and assist the iPhone community in a major way since most of us are like me... We don't want to lose our stuff just because Apple has a buggy rollout of an OS.

INCREDIBLE. This fixed my problem entirely!! Thank-you so much for contributing this information. I had to try it 3 times before I got it right, but once I did it WORKED!!! I don't know how you did it, but I can't thank you enough. Just how long do you think it will take Apple/AT&T to release this information? hahaha. You sir, are the man. :)

Ok guys, here it is another new fix that covers it all while maintaining your data. (CAUTION: Photos from the camera roll will not work after this method is complete so please back them up to the computer first. I'm not responsible if you lose your pictures.

This method is based off of dankirsh's SMS Restore method (Only fixes Cellular Data), loveturtle's Non-Corrupted APN Restore method (Only fixes Cellular Data), and my own unique concepts which seem to fix everything and keep data intact minus the photo roll.

Step 1:
Windows Users: Navigate to "X:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup"
Mac Users: Navigate to "~/Library/Application\ Support/MobileSync/Backup/"
NOTE: "X:" is the drive you installed Windows on and "User Name" is the name of your account on Windows.

Step 2:
Move all Backup files to another location to make sure the entire folder is empty.

Step 3:
Plug in your iPhone and perform a full backup.

Step 4:
After backup completes, disconnect the iPhone and copy the new folder under the backup directory to a separate location perferably named "Old" for ease of use.

Step 5:
After folder completes the copying delete it from the backup directory, NOT THE NEW LOCATION.

Step 6:
Plug in your iPhone and perform a full restore.

Step 7:
Upon completion of restore if iTunes asks to restore from a backup that you select a new configuration. While configuring the iPhone for new settings uncheck all sync boxes including Applications and Data. <-- (IMPORTANT)

Step 8:
Right click the iPhone and backup the iPhone.

Step 9:
Upon backup completion copy the new backup folder out of the previously mentioned location and copy it to a folder called "New".

Step 10:
Delete the backup that was recently created in the Backup folder.

Step 11:
Copy the backup located in the previously created "Old" folder to the Backup folder.

Step 12:
Upon completion of the copy go into the randomly named folder and delete a file named "8218978e4ab0a48035bb92653145a6be872ea858", then right click the iPhone in iTunes and select "Restore from Backup" and select "Ok" since this is the only backup in the folder.

Step 13:
Upon backup restoration completion let your iPhone sync itself with the computer and restore all of your applications. (At this point all is back to what it was like at the beginning of Step 1.)

Step 14:
After all of your Applications are synced navigate into the "New" folder and into the backup folder located inside of it, it will be named as a random string of numbers and letters.

Step 15:
Copy and overwrite the following files from the randomly named backup in the "New" folder to the "MobileSync\Backup\Randomly Named Backup" folder; "Manifest.mbdb", "Manifest.mbdx", and "Manifest.plist", they are located near the very bottom if sorted by name.

Step 16:
In iTunes right click the iPhone and "Restore Backup" once again since this is the only backup available, click ok.

Step 17:
iTunes will display an error and reboot the iPhone, this is normal.

Step 18:
Upon boot of the iPhone, check your Cellular Data, MMS, and VVM to verify all is working fine.

Step 19:
If all is working, delete any backup located in the "MobileSync" folder and perform a full backup again. As stated before, your camera roll will not work anymore for your old files. The files appear to be present on the iPhone but are corrupt and will be overwritten when a new photo is taken.

Enjoy your fully functioning iPhone once again and please keep your OLD backup files as I am not sure if the App Data will backup now. I will have to continue more testing with this.

FINAL NOTE: Resetting network settings did not break my iPhone after completing this method.

Update #1: Reports from a few users are indicating this method does work for the iPhone 4 and does fix Face Time. See post #68, #69, and #71 for more information.

It was nothing more than about 2 days of consitant and persistant testing. I had to check for other methods and try my own when others didn't work... I shall mention this once more, I'm not the one who should recieve all the credit. Thank loveturtle and dankirsh as it was their two methods combined that helped me create this fix. They basically pointed me in the right direction to come behind them and develop the 100% working fix... Actually 99.99% working, I wish the camera roll would still be there.

If my SIM was from a phone that had Mediamax plan (not apple data plan), would it still work on a iPhone 3G? I've been using it on an old iPhone 1 but when I move it to 3G, I kept on getting "Could Not Activate Cellular data Network - You are not subscribed to a cellular data service."

I tried the steps 3 times already and still no luck.

any help is greatly appreciated.

EDIT: Found a solution over on apple support forum. Basically just point your browser to http://www.unlockit.co.nz/ when you are on wifi, and select ATT as your carrier.

agreed. Thank-you again loveturtle and thank-you dankirsh for your hard work and helping to make this possible. You guys rock!! :D

I also registered just to say thanks. All is working again. my O2 uk 3GS and my Tesco Mobile iphone 4 both work great. Man this was killing me.

am I the only person who does not have this
8218978e4ab0a48035bb92653145a6be872ea858

file in any of my backups to delete?

Pls help I am stuck on this step, and cannot go further without advice.

P.S.

I have 3gs on 4.0 have the data/mms issue after normal backup.

i restored 4.0 without doing a backup, on fresh factory restore, and mms and data works fine, but not after doing backup.

so trying to correct this error as per your instructions.

Ok Great Success!! it worked.

If anyone is On FIDO in Canada, here is a TIP.

The Main issue with our device is after you upgrade to 4.0 and backup your phone, your carrier version is 7.0 and it prompts you for a carrier update, but with itunes or the push OTA the update doesnt work. it supposed to be 7.1 but nothing changes.

here is how it worked for me.

between step 7 and 8, while the phone is factory reset, and has none of your personal info inside, activate your phone, so your phone works, etc... and do the carrier update. so your carrier is fido 7.1

Now continue to step 8, your backup will have the proper fido 7.1 backed up with it.

Still no luck...
I tried a couple of times now, and on the last restore, (step 18) it gives me an error, and none of my data is available on my iphone....

I must be doing something wrong.
By the last steps, I am supposed to have basically :
- my phone with the orignial data and apps
- a backup in the apple backup folder consisting of my original data backup, with only the 3 manifest files replaced with those coming from the "clean" backup (these three files are way smaller than the ones form the orignial data backup).

When I run the update at this point, it lasts half as long as when I restore all my data, ends with an error, and I get my iphone with everything working, but no data (messages...)

Any idea ?

Thanks

Glad this worked out well for so many people! And thanks to the people who added all the details to get it fully working beyond just my SMS fix.

Finally got it working (when I stopped being dumb enough not to notice the difference between Restore and Resotre from backup...)

Thanks a lot !

Thanks to pilot76103, dankirsh, and loveturtle.

Just to give my thumbs up on this solution. I used this and some other voodoo (downgraded to 3.1.3 then to 4.0) but I doubt that voodoo really helped.

I got confused on step 12 to 13 since I got an error message at that earlier stage but it worked in the end. Rebooted my phone with no problems. MMS, Visual Voicemail, 3G/Edge internet all working as of this writing. I will try it again later when I go to work.

I still need to fix my wife's iPhone 3GS as well later tonight so I'll find out if I can replicate my success. Both iPhones were previously jailbroken. Not sure if both were done with Spirit though.

As much as I miss some jailbroken apps, I think I'll stay away from it for now. I think Apple won this round and got me scared. I'll be back in time... Jailbreak will exist for as long as Apple does! :)

got it to work. Thanks. Just wondering how altering these folders and changing/deleting files have an effect in the future?

Just to add to my comment, I tried to fix my wife's iPhone 3GS. 3G worked, Visual Voicemail is there as well. The problem is the camera for MMS is still missing. I hard booted the phone, hoping it will fix it but she left before I can check it again. If it doesn't work I might have to do exactly the same thing I did on my phone -- downgrade it to 3.1.2 then upgrade to 4.0, before following the steps above.

Another solution:

I have an Iphone 4 which I had updated from the backup of my Iphone 3G running ios4 jailbroken with redsn0w 0.9.5b5-4. The 3G had the mms missing and also no place to input the vpn. I used unlockit.nz.co to install and profile for tmobile and that worked. But no mms.

So after I set up my new iphone 4 using the backup from the unlocked G, I also did not have any vpn settings and no internet. So I also used unlockit and installed a profile, which, as most of you know, works for data, but does nothing for mms or facetime.

So I was about to do the steps listed above which seem to work until I saw that the iphone deve team had posted a new redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5 which fixes the mms problem.

Here is what I did which so far has worked great:

1. I ran redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5 on my iphoneG (unchoosing cydia, etc) and it immediatly gave me settings under network to set vpn and mms! In fact it worked for tmobile data without even setting anything in those fields.

2. I moved out the old backups from the itunes folder listed above.

3. I plugged in the G and itunes made a backup.

4. I - on the iphone 4, did a full reset, data and all. After a few minutes, it showed up like a new iphone again, with a prompt on screen to connect to itunes.

5. I connected the 4 to itunes and it asked me if I wanted to install from the backup from my G. I said yes and let it do its thing. It completely reinstalled all apps and everything (including folders) and although there is no settings area under network setup for vpn or mms like on the G. But it worked for internet and mms! and facetime! Strangely the home screeen said T-Mobile!

6. I did a full system resent (no data loss choice) and it set it back to AT&T and everything seems to be running A-OK. I have data and mms and facetime.

So basically the answer is that yes, the jailbreaked iphone 4 messes with vpn and mms but the new redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5 fixes that. So if you can get that sorted out to make a new backup folder, then you can restore a new iphone from that and it should work as it did for me.

BE CAREFUL!

Any chance we can get a youtube video tutorial showing the whole process pilot76103 written down ? I'm abit more visual then instructed please.....
