ok i'm on my new iphone 4 and all of the problems like no MMS, no facetime and no voicemail are still here...

i followed the first few steps and when i got to the "restore your phone as a new phone" step itunes is now downloading iphone firmware 4.0...

to fully dowload 4.0 it will take hours (3 to be exact) is there any way i can just DFU my phone or something to skip the whole "download firmware 4.0" step?

i know that the iphone 4 already comes pre-installed with 4.0... so there shouldnt be a problem... right?

In order to do a full restore you must allow the firmware to download if you haven't already. The reason it is now downloading is because the iOS 4 is different per each phone (3G, 3GS, 4). Because you are restoring your iPhone 4 for the first time you still don't have the firmware on the computer. The only other option would be "Erase All Content and Settings" under Settings > General > Reset. However, this method has not been tested and may not work. If you want to try it while the firmware downloads please let us know if it worked for you upon completion.

How will this method change any backup process in the future? Could I sync my pics to iPhoto then sync them back and then backup and will everything be fine again?

it's downloading now, it'll take about 3 hours. When i get back from work i'll try it and see if it works.

once it's done downloading will i be able to just plug my phone in and click restore? or will i need to find the downloaded file?

You should be able to plug it in and click restore... Personally I would start the process all over again the second you get back from work to make sure all of your backups are the latest.

Ok guys, here it is another new fix that covers it all while maintaining your data. (CAUTION: Photos from the camera roll will not work after this method is complete so please back them up to the computer first. I'm not responsible if you lose your pictures.

This method is based off of dankirsh's SMS Restore method (Only fixes Cellular Data), loveturtle's Non-Corrupted APN Restore method (Only fixes Cellular Data), and my own unique concepts which seem to fix everything and keep data intact minus the photo roll.

Step 1:
Windows Users: Navigate to "X:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup"
Mac Users: Navigate to "~/Library/Application\ Support/MobileSync/Backup/"
NOTE: "X:" is the drive you installed Windows on and "User Name" is the name of your account on Windows.

Step 2:
Move all Backup files to another location to make sure the entire folder is empty.

Step 3:
Plug in your iPhone and perform a full backup.

Step 4:
After backup completes, disconnect the iPhone and copy the new folder under the backup directory to a separate location perferably named "Old" for ease of use.

Step 5:
After folder completes the copying delete it from the backup directory, NOT THE NEW LOCATION.

Step 6:
Plug in your iPhone and perform a full restore.

Step 7:
Upon completion of restore if iTunes asks to restore from a backup that you select a new configuration. While configuring the iPhone for new settings uncheck all sync boxes including Applications and Data. <-- (IMPORTANT)

Step 8:
Right click the iPhone and backup the iPhone.

Step 9:
Upon backup completion copy the new backup folder out of the previously mentioned location and copy it to a folder called "New".

Step 10:
Delete the backup that was recently created in the Backup folder.

Step 11:
Copy the backup located in the previously created "Old" folder to the Backup folder.

Step 12:
Upon completion of the copy go into the randomly named folder and delete a file named "8218978e4ab0a48035bb92653145a6be872ea858", then right click the iPhone in iTunes and select "Restore from Backup" and select "Ok" since this is the only backup in the folder.

Step 13:
Upon backup restoration completion let your iPhone sync itself with the computer and restore all of your applications. (At this point all is back to what it was like at the beginning of Step 1.)

Step 14:
After all of your Applications are synced navigate into the "New" folder and into the backup folder located inside of it, it will be named as a random string of numbers and letters.

Step 15:
Copy and overwrite the following files from the randomly named backup in the "New" folder to the "MobileSync\Backup\Randomly Named Backup" folder; "Manifest.mbdb", "Manifest.mbdx", and "Manifest.plist", they are located near the very bottom if sorted by name.

Step 16:
In iTunes right click the iPhone and "Restore Backup" once again since this is the only backup available, click ok.

Step 17:
iTunes will display an error and reboot the iPhone, this is normal.

Step 18:
Upon boot of the iPhone, check your Cellular Data, MMS, and VVM to verify all is working fine.

Step 19:
If all is working, delete any backup located in the "MobileSync" folder and perform a full backup again. As stated before, your camera roll will not work anymore for your old files. The files appear to be present on the iPhone but are corrupt and will be overwritten when a new photo is taken.

Enjoy your fully functioning iPhone once again and please keep your OLD backup files as I am not sure if the App Data will backup now. I will have to continue more testing with this.

FINAL NOTE: Resetting network settings did not break my iPhone after completing this method.

im stuck on step 12 I dont have a file like that. Could it be different on mine? I have several files that start wit 82 but not the exact same sequence as you listed

Ok guys, here it is another new fix that covers it all while maintaining your data.

Pilot, I just registered to these forums to say...THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Everything worked as you said. Pictures really didn't matter since I just backed them up first. I haven't tried to reset all network settings...since its working...why fix it.

I also wanted to thank Loveturtle, he helped me out the first time to get data connection working.

I have an Iphone 3Gs model MC135LL just incase it will help someone.

All relevant info:

Stock 3GS had 3.1.2.

I used BlackRa1n to jailbreak that.

When spirit came out, I upgraded to 3.1.3. I then used Spirit to jailbreak.

When iOS 4 came out a couple days ago, it said you couldn't use a 3GS that had been jb with Spirit. So I downgraded to 3.1.2 and used Blackra1n again, and then upgraded to iOS 4 using PwnageTool 4.0. Everything was working great.

My iPhone 4 got here yesterday. I did a manual backup of my Jailbroken 3GS running 4.0. Then plugged in my iPhone 4 and activated as normal. I then restored all of my info from the manual backup I did of the 3GS.

Yesterday I noticed the data connection was acting a bit weird, but thought it was just the network. This morning I was trying to speed test my data connection using Speedtest.net's app, and I wasn't getting anything over 20k. As in, the connection was working... but it was going EXTREMELY slow.

I'm trying out my own method right now. I downgraded my 3GS back to 3.1.2, restored my data, but did not jailbreak it. I'm restoring my iPhone 4 now, and I'm hoping that restoring from the unjailbroken 3.1.2 backup will fix the issue. I'll let everyone know.

Oh, and if this doesn't work, I'm just going to setup as a new phone and sync my contacts from my computer. I might bring my texts over as well by switching out the file in the backup. When the iPhone 4 is jailbroken finally, I'll just use SSH to bring over all of the data from my applications.

I'm not sure that step 12 is completely necessary, mine worked without doing it.

I'm glad to see it worked for you... I also have all of my pictures back after manually erasing them on the iPhone through the photos program and allowing iTunes to sync my local copy, including videos back to the iPhone.

Glad to see you have everything working as well. Step 12 was pulled from loveturtle's method and was included since it made very good sense to remove any file associated to the "CommCenter" settings.

ok, so i'm on step 15 now and i'm not sure which backup folder to copy the files into... (there are two randomly named backups in the backup folder)

should i just copy and overwrite the files into both backups and then restore from backup?

Alright... so my method didn't work.

However, I restored, set up as new phone... and it's STILL not working.

Any ideas?

Fixed

Had the MMS issues on 2 phones neither were jailbroken completed a backup then restore and reloaded the last back up. When prompted to download the carrier settings I clicked cancel (or what ever the button was to not apply) MMS has started working again as soon as the carrier settings are downloaded MMS stops working again.

Hopefully when my 2 iPhone 4's arrive it will resolve the issue!!!

Ok, so i finally got my MMS, and facetalk to work... but there is still a problem with the proximity sensor...

every time i make a call the screen will turn off when i hold the phone up to my face, but when the call is over the screen never comes back on...? i have to constantly press the sleep/wake button to be able to use my phone again (eventually one of the many presses of the sleep button puts the phone to sleep and then i'll press it again to wake it up again...)

Worked!

Pilot,
I also just registered with MacRumors to say THANK YOU!!! I followed your every step and it worked. What's more is that I'm using the new iPhone 4 and was having the same problems as I had on my 3GS with iOS4. The worst part is that with the bug there was no FaceTime but your method also restored FaceTime back on my phone!
THANK YOU!!!

Ok I edited the first post to add the link to the step by step instructions on how to fix it in this post.

By the way, all my APPDATA was saved, including levels for games, settngs, etc. I'm been scavenging the internet for a solution for the past 36 hours..I'M SO HAPPY THANK YOU!

Ok so here is a something..
after many an hour doing the process multiple times after my itunes can not back up your iphone error 20 an losing all my texts and no mms again..
i just dragged in my last known decent back up with no mms and just copied the 3 files from the new formatted back up and got the error message after restore..all is there and i didnt lose all my Angry birds levels aswell!

im not going to back it up again for a lil bit and see what happens this time.. last time i got the error codes so i will use the phone for a bit today and it prob wont make any difference but i will see what it does

Alright, so it appears I've got this figured out.

I spent hours and hours today trying to solve this issue.

Went down to the ATT store a couple blocks away, the guy takes the phone and starts browsing... and it's working perfectly... in fact... it's blazing.

Turns out... the tower that my phone was using when I'm in my apartment, which is literally 2 blocks from ATT... was having technical difficulties. In fact, they said it's been happening the past couple days.

So, I did all of this for absolutely nothing. My phone was working perfectly from the start.

So, I recommend everyone who is experiencing this get in your car and drive to another location to make sure it's not just the tower.

I live in Downtown Denver by the way.
