AT&T is stupid to send such a message that sounds like as if they already have MMS up and running.

Clearly. This message is little more than another attempt at positive publicity and to placate the masses. Funny how AT&T has trouble releasing an updated carrier file, but I can download it for free from a number of different sources. Oh well, I'm going to go tether some more.

OK - we have what? 2 people that got the text? I got nothing of course.

General - that would be nice.

Would you like me to tell you how to get MMS?

(it works 100% and i've been using it without limit for 4 days now)

$30? I bet that'll be more like $60

If they charged $60 I would just buy a sprint data card...you could even get their 4G card for $20 more per month but they haven't rolled out enough 4G towers yet (Only in Baltimore right now).

how exactly do you plan on hiding a surge of potentially gigabytes' worth of extra data usage from AT&T?

Browsing the web on my computer while I wait for the next train uses no more bandwidth than browsing the web on my phone while I wait for the next train.

What makes you think I'm going to be downloading large files? Either way, it doesn't matter. I have an unlimited data plan.

that's just plain not true. your computer has faster processing so it can process and use data faster than your iphone. the web pages will load faster so you will use more data. and most of us would have ichat, safari, mail, etc. open, which is something we cant do on our phones

Wrong. It's the same radio connecting to the same cell towers and using the same data connection. I am limited by the speed of the iPhone's radio hardware and AT&T's reception in whichever area I am.

My computer rendering websites faster than the iPhone does not affect the amount of bandwidth used.

Browsing the internet on my computer does not use "potentially gigabytes of data" ... No matter how you look at it. Only would downloading tons of large files do that.

And even if it did use more data, I have an unlimited data package, so it doesn't matter.

I got this text too! I am happy I am not the only one.

Also, for anyone who got all three things working with the 3GS please enlighten me with what method.

I had VVM, Tethering, and MMS all working on my 3G. No luck on the 3GS

Seems that this is one of those standard SMS they send when you first sign up or renew your contract and get a SMS plan.

It doesn't take in data ANY faster than the iPhone. That's like saying using WiFi on my PS3 uses more data then using WiFi on my PSP.

According to AT&T, we were supposed to get the message that started this post (I won't bother adding it here, but it does seem like this thread has got somewhat off-topic) when MMS would be available to us. So, I don't know why the person that got that message doesn't have MMS. However, I do know that they'll get the update by going into itunes and getting an updated carrier file. Perhaps, AT&T hasn't communicated its availability to Apple? Who knows. All I know is that I haven't got the message that started this post. Ugh!!

yeah it does. think about it. going from the 3g to the 3gs, pages load faster so if you load 4 mb of data faster for a page or something like that, you can move on the the next page faster and so in the time that you could load 3 pages of data on the 3g you might be able to load 6 pages on the 3gs. it only gets faster when you move to a computer because the main limitation of browsing on the phones is the processor speed

B - yes sure. But I glanced at the big MMS thread and saw so many failures that I figured I would hold off. It seems like a very lengthy process also with some effects of screwing up other features of the phone?

I dissagree with the tethering sucking up bandwidth, etc. I mean, so many borderline assume we're going to be spamming 10,000 emails or doing freekishly intensive work for hours on end.

kinda upsetting when you don't get the message from AT&T. it's like a little bit of light shining through, just to be covered by clouds again.

Here, let me show you how little I know about how networking works by telling you that having a faster processor means you use more bandwidth.

Are you guys saying that if I apply the Carrier Update that I will get MMS without all that changing text plans nonsense?
