help meee

Can someone help me out. I'm not sure I understand all this bookmarks and syncing thing. Do I just have to sync my idisk before the 6th? or go on the .mac site and sync something there? Sorry if I'm just having a thick moment.

Go to System Preferences -> .Mac -> Sync -> check the box for bookmarks. What's happening is that at the moment, when you log onto .Mac you can open a window that has your bookmarks from your home computer in it. It never really worked properly for me. With MobileMe, that window is disappearing, so Apple are telling you to make sure all your bookmarks are accessible on your computer... in case you have some bookmarks stored in the web version that aren't on your computer.

I let my .mac subscription expire in May. I remember reading somewhere that Apple is going to offer a free 90 day trial of Mobile Me. Does anyone know for sure?

It is strange indeed that Apple will continue to sell a boxed piece of paper for MobileMe as they did with .Mac, especially when you consider that activation codes for iWork can be purchased online, and MobileMe doesn't even involve actual software. Get with it Apple, this is dumb stuff!

Here is what the logo is really saying

That's what I was trying to work out, too. Finally came to the same conclusion that you need to make sure any bookmarks you have only on the WEB version need to be synced to your Mac at home or work.

I never used it like that, so it's really a non-issue for me. Haven't synced them in months, maybe years even...

And then some might have some bookmarks best left on the home computer...and no place else...

Have a happy 4th!

Am I one of the few people who actually use the online bookmarks? It's super useful when I'm on someone else's computer, or when I was a student on one of the libraries computers. Is this still a need for some of you? What are you planning to transition to?

As a stockholder, I don't like to see Apple wasting money boxing and shipping a piece of paper. I think it is also embarrassing for a high tech company to be apparently unable to provide this product to customers without buying a piece of paper which has to be boxed and shipped. Are those good enough reasons for you?

I never used the bookmarks, both because they never really worked for me and because the only time I use the .mac online stuff is for e-mail at work. I get the sense that a lot of people are the same boat.

I am VERY much looking forward to having access to my iCal from work though, instead of having to type something into my iPhone and sync it when I get home (which I forget to do about 75% of the time because I charge through the wall plug, not my laptop). Hopefully they fix Contact syncing though. Mine's never really worked right on the web, through strangely enough it works Mac-to-Mac with no problems.

I imagine that they're shipping them like this only for the initial launch and after that, they'll be primarily for in-store purchases. You can sign up for .mac online and paperlessly as it stands right now, so I don't know why they'd change that outright with MobileMe other than to create as much hype as they can by letting people track their shipments online (which, while it won't be anywhere near as huge as the massive forum discussions about where your copy of Leopard was that started at 4 AM that Friday, you know some people will do it).

Maybe. I know that renewals to .Mac could be done paperlessly but ironically at a significantly higher price than buying the boxed piece of paper from Amazon. This never made any sense to me.

It amazes me that the freaks over at Greenpeace don't have anything to say about this. They are always on about Apple and their packaging. AppleCare and MobileMe is such a huge waste of packaging. Talk about marketing at its finest. I mean, I know people like to feel like they bought something tangible that they can hold and feel, but it's an empty box. It contains 1 little piece of paper with a reg code on it. Wouldn't it be better if they just sold something that looked like, or was the same size as an iTunes gift card?

No - the plastic used in those cards is cheap and toxic - you can not recycle it usually. Paper is recyclable and cheaper than actual plastic that is recyclable (see: http://www.earthworkssystem.com/ for some that are recyclable).

Edit: I didn't read your post that well sorry. Yes they should do a paper card like the iTunes free downloads with the code on the back that are at Starbucks.

I'll second that motion. It would be surprising & dissapointing if Apple just gets rid of this functuionality. Isn't there a way to do something similar with a Firefox or Google account? I guess Apple is pushing some people toward the competition's products.

If the service works the way it's described, I don't care what they call it or what the box looks like. Can't wait!
