Wow.. the collective rage that Apple would have the nerve to make a retail version of MobileMe. Pathetic. I can't help but wonder what you people mutter every time you walk past a newspaper stand.

Newspaper? NEWS P A P E R !!!!??

Don't get me started. ;)

While MobileMe will allow bookmark syncing between computers, it will remove the online web access to them. In order to preserve your bookmarks, you need to make sure they are synced to your Mac.

Seriously, why would they remove this feature? I find it hard to believe one of the few really useful things about .Mac is going away. I just used this several times at NECC 2008 this week to add bookmarks to review after the conference.

Then again, as noted on the bottom of http://www.apple.com/mobileme/features:

All features subject to change.

So maybe they'll change their thinking on this...

Apple removes cash as an option to pay for an iPhone = Outrage
Apple gives the option to pay cash for MM, via a retail package = Outrage

Presumably your bookmarks can sync to your iPhone, so perhaps it's just a way to get more people buying iPhones ;) seriously I agree, if your still allowing syncs between devices why not keep the online edit / access function?
Still not stopped me signing up for it though.. The push email got me in the end ;) can't wait for my box  LOL

If the service works the way it's described, I don't care what they call it or what the box looks like. Can't wait!

I agree. It seems they are fixing the iDisk issues that have been a concern for .Mac; however, they better have fixeded Back To My Mac. That was one of the coolest features of Leopard with a .Mac account, and it has been embarrassingly useless to many users such as myself, and I only uses Apple routers.

i still dont get why people want to buy, wait, and receive a box with a manual in it about an online service....Wouldn't it be easier to just do it online and get everything up immediately?

PS, and more environmentally friendly.

I received a discount when I bought my iMac. Had to buy both at the same time.

Still, with Steve making such a big deal on going green, it does not make any sense to be shipping out packaging for an online service.

I think I know the answer to this, but if I have 6 months .mac remaining, I only get the other 6 months via mobile me, correct? In other words they don't just issue everyone a whole new year of the new service...?

Yeah that is correct, they just transfer your current service over :)

What happened to the push for being a greener Apple?

I agree with the above sentiment - the use of e-mail for activation codes is much more efficient and easier than tangibly receiving a cardboard box.

EDIT: I know this has been stated before, but I still can't get over the 'me' on MobileMe; it's far too similar to a dodgy product by another large software company (for Apple's sake, hopefully not nearly as dodgy):

Dont ever Compare Mac and that piece of Trash ever ;)

I think I'm the only person who doesn't mind 'Mobile Me' and thinks the box and logo are beautiful.

i totally agree with you. Great logo, great features.

and all this comparing the MobileMe name to WindowsME, wow they end with the same two letters... in this thinking Osama and Obama must have more in common. Its just stupid.

I'm all up for wasting time, but does anyone realize most of this thread isn't really about the MobileMe service, but the actual box itself? It's pretty sad.

I think the only simple reason for this kind of a box packaging is for RETAIL Services.

Apple knows that they are never going to provide a discount so why restrict a product to be discounted!

Discounts are an excellent way for improving product sales (recent surveys have shown that discounts can increase sales of a good product by as much as 32%).
Because once you see a discount, the question "Whats the need for it?" really blurs out and if the product and brand is of good reputation, then we get excited and buy it.
How do I know this? Well, some knowledge and the rest experience (I myself got .Mac for $65 from ebay)

So from all this, it should be quite obvious why Apple makes boxes!

And also, why else do you think they have automatic activation feature (horrible thing which doesn't even tell us when & what its gonna do) for Trial accounts and current members?
The boxes are essentially only meant for new comers to entice them to join through a discount!
