No, this is not another rant on how a mod bans. This is more of:

"I have seen entire nights where no mods were found and trouble was all over board."

and also of:

"I have seen entire months where 2 of the current mods have not been seen or heard of"

I think it's time MR calls for more of them. I know arn doesn't like to be told names, but I think Eidorian would make one hell of a mod.

Post merging is all that I'd really ever want to take care of. I'd rather avoid dealing with the general nonsense otherwise. Thanks though.

How about teaching the system to only allow new threads or posts when a mod is currently signed in? That would be little bit amusing, but I'm kidding. As they say, "While the cats are away, the mice will play." And that wasn't meant as a pun for the cat names used for OSX.

Then we'd all form a pact and NEVER sign on... ;)

If we're nominating people I have a few ideas:

-aggie- and jav6454 to mod the iPhone forums.
Waloshin for the Community forums
DesignerDale for the photography forum
Rom ... I mean cindori for the MacPro forums
SchilderMan for the Purchase Thread (just the thread)
Dagless for the gaming forum
MacNut to mod the site and forum feedback forum
rdowns to mod the PRSI forum

You all can thank me later.

Yeah, there's a lot of flaming going on in some of those threads. I was rudely attacked (well, it wasn't THAT bad, but it was pretty close to namecalling) in the 'Microsoft PC vs Mac' thread under the MR news section. I'm kind of tired of Microsoft trolls jumping on everyone here.

Why not add a few of the more mature members as pseudo-mods? What I mean by this is have a squad that have Moderator in their title so the average user thinks a mod has just politely asked people to behave in their respective threads?

This way you have the threat of a mod watching you, but don't have to give mod powers to lots of people (I don't know the planned policy on numbers of mods, but as in all things too many chiefs becomes a pain to monitor).

Many times just the sight of a mod posting 'lets keep this on topic', or 'that was not very constructive or polite' in a given thread can have the desired effect.

just an idea of course.

Iv'e got tears in my eyes right now. :D

I'll volunteer. I even have experience moderating a pretty popular PSP site a few years ago.

EDIT: Actually, I don't think I'd have enough free time.

Had a thought, if the capability exists (which likely is no) for a pseudo-mod category of user. Their ability would be to put posts/threads in a "moderate" state, similar to moderating comments on a blog, that keeps them from being seen publicly. Then later, actual mods can either delete them or re-allow them to be seen. I first thought about this for any user, but that would easily be abused, but if the ability was given to specific users it might be useful.

Maybe MR can make certain people mini-Mods if they post and ask for it a lot.

For the people volunteering, do you really want the job? Seriously?

I admin a very big forum. Not the amount of unique users at MR but it is rather large. It is a major PITA most of the time, with very little respect given. You are constantly being questioned about your actions. You can never make everyone happy. You have to delete spam. You get constant PM's "can you change my user name", "this guy called me a name" yada-yada-yada. You have to deal with vindictive users who target others for nothing other than inflating their e-penis. It has literally sucked most of the fun out of that forum for me.

Seriously, the job is thankless and some of these people devote TONS* of their free time to make the experience better for all. But it isn't easy and it isn't a walk in the park. You will, ABSOLUTELY, be looked upon differently as soon as your status is changed and mostly not in a good way.

*getting a PM email on my iphone while I'm at the bar to delete spam. Yup, just what I felt like doing at the bar!
