Actually, I believe most people's comments are mute, unless they're using a screen reader. Perhaps you picked this up because of a recent LifeHacker posting on misheard expressions? It's what your comment made me think of.

While what you say is true about them being mute, we all know what he meant. I actually didn't see that article but am about to read it now. I just hate when people use phrases or words incorrectly. I used to have a boss who would type "for all intensive purposes" all the time in emails and it drove me up the wall.

PS... if there are grammar problems with anything I type, that is to be expected because I suck at grammar. I don't mind being called out on it because it helps me learn :p

EDIT - Just saw my boss example in the link you supplied! Glad I'm no the only one that hates it.

Yea, I know, my post was all in fun. That phrase your boss used is one of the mentioned ones in the linked article.

If I were a mod.. I'd just go around TIMG every image and merging posts. I'd probably end up editing people's posts because of poor grammar and spelling! (sarcasm)

Interesting! A mod who breaks forum rules!
Corrections. There is no need to point out another poster's spelling or grammatical errors unless you think it is causing confusion. Remember that not all members are native English speakers. Communication, not correctness, is our goal. Examples: Don't correct members who spell Mac in all caps or who call the iPod touch an iTouch. When other people (especially new members) fail to search and start new threads on old topics, don't scold them or make them feel unwelcome. The best way to be helpful is by posting a link to a relevant thread or specific instructions for problem solving. Set a good example yourself by searching first before starting a thread if you have a question that may already have been answered in the forums or you want to discuss a topic that may already have been discussed.

If you want to drive yourself crazy, have fun with that... :D

But we don't. The only time I actually change something for grammar/spelling would be if a user titled their post something like, "Is they're an iTouch 8G?" Then I'd change it to "Is there an iPod Touch 8G?". I don't personally care if they call it iTouch or iPod Touch nor do I care about their homonym usage... the only reason to change it is because then people will go into the thread solely to point out the posters errors. So saves time in the long run... they'll still probably have crappy grammar and spelling in their post but I really don't care.

I am not a member of a large number of forums, but I spend a lot of time on the 'net :)o), and for being a large forum I think MacRumors is very well moderated. Too many forums allow flamewars to run out of control, or (worse) the mods get involved in the flaming and pandemonium ensues. Not to mention that many forums go overboard with gigantic avatars, sigs and garish designs, while MR has a pleasingly minimalist look.

I've been around here for more than six years, and I can only remember a couple of occasions where threads have turned truly ugly. Arn, the admins and the mods have done their job quite well as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure most forums (especially bigger ones like this) are always in need of Mods, but forum moderation is definitely not for everyone.

Off-Topic

The worst mod I have EVER dealt with would be on the Just Cause 2 forums.

His name is iDribber and he is such a sad sap because he always gets mad at users if they spell wrong or write a post/reply wrong. He also locks almost every new topic made.

Its insane......just insane

I've seen mods ban users (permanently) for incorrect grammar and/or spelling before as well as the usual failure-to-search citation. At least that doesn't happen here.

That said, it is always nice to read a well formed, grammatically correct post, but alas, the entire world isn't English :)

In terms of the mod situation, well, I've been lurking here since '06 (but obviously started to post later than that), and I have to say I really haven't seen anything terrible. The iPhone forum definitely is a hotspot, and while I think the site could use 1-2 more mods, its not something that I would deem as urgent-- its just the usual 90% of the time. You might want to consider bringing on more (temporary?) mods around the major events/product launches though, since that's usually when spam, flames, and generally nastiness gets out of control.

Not directed at anyone specifically, and speaking from experience, but if there's one thing that's less helpful than watching obviously intelligent forum members digging themselves into a hole largely of their own making, it's then watching them carry that grudge around in a publicly obvious fashion.

No mods are perfect, but behaving that way, pointing out their mistakes in what is essentially a private matter, is a sure signal of receiving unwarranted further attention at a later stage. I know it's difficult, but trying to let things go is the best course.

That's why I always use the overly-general in references to incidences of mis-action; non specificities rock :D

I mean really though, I doubt there's many people who carry around a true grudge over an Internet forum-- I'm sure there are, but their reasoning is usually just as convoluted and incorrect as the person they so loathe.

Reasoning doesn't come into it. Reading the highly-agitated and deeply offensive state of some messages to the team or individual mods is a real eye-opener, and over time, can have a corrosive effect on the morale of those who are just trying to do the right thing, which is why I will always stand by the moderators as a team, knowing the invisible crud they deal with every moment of the day here.

Anyway, for those who are looking forward to seeing new mods on board, I expect that things are moving along. The biggest changes, when that happens, will not be immediately visible nor have much of an impact on the vast majority of forum members, except for probably some quicker actioning of certain post reports at certain times of the day.
