It's 33 thousand. As much as I earn in a year. Maybe crime does pay

I told a good friend this story last night and he nearly fell off his chair. He suggested staging a burglary as a way to shift the blame away from me. We were drinking at the time and it sounded like a good idea – everything does after whiskey.

The cops won't be able to protect you, and locks aren't going to stop a criminal looking for 30 large.

The one thing I agree with—whether you take the money or not—is to get the **** out of there and leave NO TRACES of who you are. Pay off the landlord or something, change your name... it'd be unpleasant if the dude started looking for you.

Wow.

I agree with many of the other posters... do not stay. And certainly don't leave it in the floor with the locks unchanged. In this situation:

Best case- he breaks in (it's unlikely he still has a key), rips up the floor and trashes the place.

Somewhere in between- he breaks in, steals anything worth stealing (including whatever you're typing on now), and rips up the place to find the cash.

Worst case- He breaks in with weapons.

No matter what you do with the money, you should leave. In my opinion, you should turn in the money, give the cops only what you know to be facts (you found it in your floor, it's XX thousand, you don't know waht to do with it), and move. Maybe the police have some policy that allows you to keep it if it's unlaimed. Maybe not. Either way it ends up in the right hands, you're safe, and you don't need to worry about lifelong guilt trips or fear of being attacked.

I wish I'd never found it now. I was so excited when it happened – had to recheck it was there the next morning in case it was a dream. I suppose whatever I do, I'd better move out.

You certainly need to move out of there ASAP. Right Now. New locks do nothing. Maybe even move far away. Even if you turn in the money the bad guy or his associates may coming looking for you. Do you think they are going to believe that you turned it in? You are at risk whether you turn it in or not. Look at it from their perspective. I've read that hit contracts only cost in thousands of dollars. The bad guy could easily pay someone to visit you and "extract" the cash and worse. And also don't leave any contact info with the landlord. I'd even consider changing my name a bit. You don't want this following you around.

Not a good find at all... :(

This really sucks, I feel bad for you.

there is one alternative. Go see him in jail. Tell him you have it, and when he gets out, you'll give it to him and he doesn't have to worry about you going to the cops.

but this is a really bad suggestion now that i think about it because :
1) they might monitor the conversation in jail
2) someone else besides him might know the money is there and will come looking for it at ANY time
3) a move like this is inspired by movies where everything always works out.

I would hate to be in your situation.

This might sound nuts but have you considered contacting the drug-dealor and giving the money directly to him? I'm not sure if that's a crime or not, but I'd feel a lot better sleeping at night knowing that he's not searching for you and his money. He's obviously not going to go to the police and try and claim it. He'll find it missing and assume that you took it.

Do you have common name? I'm not sure how easy it would be to track you down then.

EDIT: haha... Johnee beat me to it. He's got a point about someone else coming to look for the money. How long has the guy been in Jail for? If it has been a while and they haven't come I doubt they would... but you never know.

see the drawbacks to this in my post above. We posted this at the same time :D

Eek, guys- pretty sure that would score high on the Criminal Accomplice scoreboards.

Yeah... but there's a pretty low chance of being caught. I'd rather be caught by the police for a relatively minor crime then caught by this guy searching for his money.

It's just an idea... and probably a bad one.

33/K???

Yeah, call/take it to the police immediately. Then get in touch with the landlord and inform him of this (after the money is in the hands of the police).

Then yes, I'd suggest moving as well. For that amount of money there is no question that some one may come looking for it, so keeping it and spending it is not an option.

I'd be more worried that the owner of the money might come back for it if he's released...

That was my first thought. Id take the money but move outa there ASAP.

Someone is going to spend that money one way or another. Why let it be the Police?

Turn it in, or turn in half and keep half to finance your VERY NECESSARY move. Go now!

Nah, if he turns it in, he'll have to turn in all of it. I'm sure it's trivial for the police to get his accounts monitored after he turns in the cash, and if he starts doing a lot of expensive stuff without his accounts moving at all, they'll probably start asking some questions.

But as soon as you take it to the police, you'd better be damn sure no one knows your name when you move out, otherwise you'll still have a pissed off criminal looking for you once he's released. Personally, I'd say just put it back where you found it, and get the hell out, let someone else deal with it, be that the landlord or the next sucker who moves in.

I mean, if you were gonna keep the money, you'd probably have to do some illegal (and difficult) things to move it in a way that'd keep you safe from the criminal (i.e. bank account with fake name/ID, wire to anonymous Swiss account, etc.). It's probably just best to count it as unfortunate luck, suck it up and finance your own quick move back out of there, and just have it as a fun story to tell a few years down the line when it's well behind you. Well, and when some other poor bastard makes the news in relation to the money. :D Then you can say "at least it wasn't me."

tsk... take the cash and run... just dont leave a trail behind you

33,000 what? Pesos? Dollars? Euros?

With that much money, I'd get out of the house and don't let any neighbors know where you went and don't have an auto mailing thing with the post office, telephone, etc. And if your landlord has a cell number for you, get a new cell phone - no traces. Even if you leave and leave the money, someone else might find it and by the time the original owner comes looking for it, you're first on the list regardless. Bigger locks do you know good if he ends up waiting for you to come home to let him back in. There is no need to put yourself in harms way and staying there just increases the odds of some sort of stupidity.

The other question, besides the people who have read this thread, is who else knows about the money? I'm hoping you haven't mentioned it to your neighbors.
