Nah, if he turns it in, he'll have to turn in all of it. I'm sure it's trivial for the police to get his accounts monitored after he turns in the cash, and if he starts doing a lot of expensive stuff without his accounts moving at all, they'll probably start asking some questions.

I mean, if you were gonna keep the money, you'd probably have to do some illegal (and difficult) things to move it in a way that'd keep you safe from the criminal (i.e. bank account with fake name/ID, wire to anonymous Swiss account, etc.). It's probably just best to count it as unfortunate luck, suck it up and finance your own quick move back out of there, and just have it as a fun story to tell a few years down the line when it's well behind you.

Half is only 16K. If he is smart about it, the cops don't need to know how much he found. The banks don't need to know. Cash is still accepted in many parts of the world. Just don't make large cash purchases.

That being said, turn the whole thing over if you can afford a fast move. Definately no forwarding address.

The other question, besides the people who have read this thread, is who else knows about the money? I'm hoping you haven't mentioned it to your neighbors.

D

That's another good point—you have posted on the Internet about it, on a public forum no less. Now, your real name isn't here, nor your location, but still... I'd suggest dropping this user name at the same time you move, start a new one here and don't give any indication you're the same person. It's unfortunate, but this kind of money never comes without strings attached, and finding it is more a hassle than anything else. :(

Either you turn all of it in or none. If the original owner finds out only 16k was turned into the police, then he knows some of it has gone missing - which he'll want to get.

Besides, even if he made the money through drug dealing activities, there's no guarantee that its all from that. He might have "sold" other things as well. Don't make any assumptions on where the money came from. And the even worse scenario is that its not even the previous tenants money, but someone elses, like his supplier or what ever. Mob/ cartel == very scary stuff. Don't take any chances.

This could be a good start to a very cool movie - "Inspired By Actual Events" - add a whole bunch of unnecessary drama/action you won't go through, with a puzzle piece plot line like Snatch. :D

Do whatever you want with the money, but get out. Don't give any reasons to anybody, and don't tell anyone where you're going.

How much have you already told your neighbours/landlord about yourself?

The rental agents failure to disclose information pertinent to your safety is probably grounds for voiding the rental agreement for the flat.

You are so level headed.

We're all freaking out but you provide stable advice. Please keep it up :)

irishgrizzly : Now that you have a way out, GET OUT and don't tell anyone in that apt complex/building where you're going!!

Nevertheless I would also suggest to move out into a new place. Leave the money or turn it in or whatever, just get out of there. For your safety and for the people around you.

Tough Call

I vote for giving it to me (I am broke for the last 2 years working on a project I will have to sue over to get paid in full) If there was ever a charitible case it's me. Or you should turn it in to the police.
Either way, move, soon, fast, far.
Where are you located?

If it were me that money would be spent. Who says that before being liquidated the house wasn't already searched and cleaned?

Who am I fooling. I'd be the first one to report the money or keep it until someone showed up. Then if after a substantial amount of time, no one showed up. I'd spend it.

Invite the girl to dinner :)

Let me tell you something in my experience.

I once did the right thing for the right reasons and the people just kicked my butt in return.

I will tell you to keep the money and put into savings or some place where it can earn interest or so.

That is what I would do. Then, if anybody needs something and is in an emergency YOU do the charity action. Giving money to charity for me is like buying God's aceptance.

Keep the money for something good. If you give it away eventually you may need it and you will remember you had that money. If it felt in your hand is yours, money does not have an owner.

And do not worry about living there, you can tell you just move in. Even, I will recomend you to ask for another flat for any other reason. the landor will understand.

33k?????

Nice, I didn't read that before.

First, consider this....

How do you know that money was his? probably belong to the previous person living there but lets say he put it there.

Now, YES, I would move out of there. Tell the landor you received an strange visitor asking for some one there and the guy wan't nice and for security you would like to move out.

Then, if some one ever look for the money, it could be you, the landor or the person who clean who may found it.

The other thing you could do is to leave the money there and is just not your business.

But I see no problem with you getting cought. That guy went to jauil and he is so used to loose. He lost his freedom already, loosing money is just another day in the office. And I bet he has way more problems to resolve.

Just move somewhere else. Keep the money safe for a while and time will tell.

The problem is if it is fake, if you go with 33K to a bank for a deposit with fake money you go to jail. But I do not think so.

If you are too worry just leave the money there and forget about it. I am a risky person and I would do things with it.

The other question, besides the people who have read this thread, is who else knows about the money? I'm hoping you haven't mentioned it to your neighbors.D

At this time probably we will see this thread on CNN tomorrow.

HEY!!!! do that!!!! go to the TV station, give to charity and be a hero!!!!!!!!!! that would be so much fun!!!!! 15 minutes of fame!

but tell them you found only 10K, keep the rest ;)

I'd move...is 33k worth your life?

I'd look into the law first, but I'd guess its yours, unless its stolen, or from drugs.

Or leave it where you found it, if anyone comes looking for it, give it to them. However they people looking for it, might not be nice, knock on your door and ask for their 33K back, break in and steal its seems more likely.

If you don't spend it, the cops will be more then happy too.

Needless to say you need to move one way or the other.

Start packing and get yourself a bulletproof vest and some dead locks.

If you decide to keep the money, which I imagine is quite tempting, take a bill somewhere where you can see if it is authentic.

If you stay where you are and put the money back, and the guy comes back looking for it, it still doesn't mean he's not going to hurt you.

I once found some money in the street, I used it for my studies.

But first consider this: money belongs to no one. You rented the apartment and is legally yours. Probably were the savings of the old lady who lived there until she passed away and then some one moved there and then the drug guy.

Clear up your mind.

The only reason you fell strange/ tempted is because is not the usual way to find money. You are educated to work for it a lot, that is why it feels strange.

But lets say you develop some sort of desease in a year. There is a way for you to get fixed. Or your mom or something.

There is nothing wrong by using the money in good things.

Probably tomorrow you will need a lawyer to suit some one who hurted you a few years from now. I mean, there are so many unusual things you can do with it.

I am not talking about getting a new car or traveling, that would be some sort of greed. Just be cool with it and do not feel guilty, you haven't done anything wrong and you are not hurting anybody. Probably the landor would be the onely person with who you would actually give something or the actual owner of the property. But they are fine. If not broken why fix it?

If you don't know if you feel right keeping it, and you don't necessarily want to turn it in, just hold onto it and save it. Move out of your apartment regardless. Maybe someday it will be useful for a good cause.

I agree with the poster above going out and buying a car or a boat or some/many expensive item(s) would be kinda bad karma. Putting it to good use would not be- education, health care, donations.

The way I see it though is that if your former tenant gets his hands back on the money, he then has the ability to continue to drug deal, buy weapons, and continue crime in your city and country. After getting out of jail, I believe that is most likely what he will do. Getting that money out of his hands I think is the same as getting drugs off the street.

I don't have time to read the rest of this thread, but from what I read I think that you should give the money to the police, tell them exactly what you know, and then move. It doesn't sound like a safe place to be. From common sense, if it's that much money someone will come back looking for it.

Spend $3000 of it on a huge gun and if anyone breaks in to take it shoot them. Or just turn it all in.
