Well it's over, thanks for all the suggestions – thought hard about keeping it and going on a 2 year holiday, but I've got to much else going on in my life right now. So I went to the police and told them all about it. They had the idea to question him (the dealer) about it, saying that they found it on a inspection (not mentioning anything about me). The cops also said the the guy was fairly smalltime (although 33k doesn't sound like smalltime to me). The money will go towards victims of crime, so some good has come out of it.

Sounds like it's turning out for the best. Have you talked to the police about anything having to do with your protection? I know they're saying they found it in an inspection, but you never know if he's going to come back to his old place. Who knows if there's more cash hidden elsewhere...

And yes, $33K is pretty small time...boatloads of money in the drug trade.

They can't really offer any protection for a case like this – apart from giving me a detectives telephone number. They said the guy was doped up to his eyes when they arrested him – he was caught by acting so strange in the street from drug paranoia, while two officers were walking by. He then tried to swallow all the drugs he had on him to get rid of the evidence and a major freak out in the station. I think I was told all this to understand he's not exactly a mastermind.

Keep. The guy was a drug dealer. He got the money doing illegal actions, so keep it. The guy is not going to come back after it. It would be way to obvious if he came and stole it.

You did the right thing. Good will come out of it.

the irony is that once you leave the police station you get a traffic ticket any way... :(

I agree with your decision to tell the police. How money is acquired is more important than how it is spent, to me.

I would've turned it in, no problem... okay maybe I would've taken a picture of myself with it first but... yeah I could keep $33k and spend it something I don't need, or pay off bills or whatever... but then I'd have a lingering fear of getting caught or found out and things going worse later... for the rest of my life... that's not worth $33k... $34k maybe... but not $33k.

To those who said keep the money, I guess you guys never saw "A Simple Plan" or "Shallow Grave". You did the smart thing. And think of the stories you'll be able to tell and the good that this money will do. Good that your profile here is N/A, just in case.....nah, what are the odds that a whacked out dealer is on MacRumors.......

I would still move out of that place. The drugged up/forgetful crook might still show up at the door looking for the money some day in the future.
