Yeah maybe they are aiming towards normal consumers, to beat the PC market. But how are they going to do that with those prices?

They won't. Not when you can get a PC that has better specs, more ports, more featurs, etc than the Macs at 1/3rd the price. Apple is going to lose it's audio/video/photo crowd also. This update does nothing for anybody except people that just want to look cool and spend a couple extra $1000 for no reason. Apple should just stick to working on new pink toy ipods and stay out of the computer thing. Their only decent laptop is the current macbook pro, which has a faulty gpu that could blow up and kill you instantly. That's the best mac has to offer though. The fact that they lied about the problem and just kept selling these is amazing too. What a classy company. A hobo off the street could have pulled off a better notebook update than this. Steve Jobs = Genius

Perhaps Apple is trying to tell people that if you are a graphics designer, you shouldn't using a laptop (Pro or otherwise), you should really get the Powermac. It is faster and supports multiple drives.

that's what everyone was saying about the iMac.

The iMac is the iMac, not the MBP... The iMac is meant to be used at home by my grand-parents. The MBP is meant to be used on the road by the people who would use a Mac Pro (or a powerful tower PC) at the office or at home. That's not exactly the same target... If my grand-parents needed to bring the iMac on holydays, they would buy a regular MacBook (and probably would not mind the glossy display for the few minutes a day they use the computer)...

I spend around 12 hours a day in front of a computer. My confort is not negotiable. This is to the point that I bought my own mouse and keyboard for my work PC, because I could not stand the cheap and unconfortable Dell crap. I have some friends who bought their own monitors for work to replace the low end crap they were given.
*This* is the target for the MBP: people who are willing to fork $2000 in a laptop that has specs similar to a $1000 Dell, because they value things that are not in the specs - confort, pleasure of use...

hmmm...no 17" update. that's very lame and will hurt them. i'm not so sure about the glossy "glass" display either. MBP's are not meant to be mini iMacs.

i'll keep my MBP thank you very much.

Depressions...

Yeah, we'll see if Joe Six Pack and Hockey Moms are going to continue to fork over thousands of dollars to Apple in the coming Recession/Depression. Lolz.

Maybe then Apple will come crawling back to us professionals on their knees....

Well if there is a depression then all you "professionals" are going to be looking for work...coz the second thing that gets cut is advertising (slightly after the coffee machines and water coolers).

The more expensive SSD is now more capacious than the HDD! Very good!

On a related note - various SSD articles were talking about doubling to quadrupling the SSD speed. Tests of the 64GB SSD weren't showing an overall increase in speed, just faster random seeks (and slower sequential), so any improvement there would be very interesting.

I think (and hope) that Apple have been very clever with all this hype. Releasing images of prototypes as "leaks", making sure "price lists" reach the rumor sites etc.

And then Steve will get up tomorrow morning and there will be this amazing new line of MacBooks, MacBook Pro's and perhaps some extras (docking systems, monitors etc).

I am very sad to say this probably won't happen, but I just can't see Apple, under the leadership of Steve Jobs doing something this stupid. Messing up the line, multiple styles within the same line (White and Aluminum MacBooks), not creating matching Pro's with matte screens... This just doesn't seem possible that this could happen... After all, Apple DO want to sell these things, make money and keep customers, pro's and consumers.

Please Apple, don't let down all your loyal customers... Please wow us...

I would have thought the glossy glass on top of the screen would add a lot of weight to a laptop.
Why would they do that?

No way, dude.... the demand for escapist entertainment increases (my line of work).....

No, labor is the first thing that gets cut. Spending on advertising remains the same or increases slightly during bad times. Car companies are lining up around the block outside ad agencies right now. The coffee machines and water coolers are the last to go. ;)

The iMac is the iMac, not the MBP...

I'm not comparing the iMac to the Macbook Pro. I was just saying that people said exactly the same thing when the iMac came out: some wunder-company is going to come up with a solution to de-glossify the mirror-iMac in no time.

Hasn't happened. And probably won't happen for the MBP, either.

Huh? It's almost the same footprint as the MBP of today (yesterday actually). And seriously, who the F wants a numpad? Redundant and unnecessary.

There are still people out there who work with their machines. Programming and f/x animation without numpad is annoying.

Maybe Apple is further raising the 17-incher to a higher/different market (or price point), relative to the 15"... maybe something along HP's HDX or EliteBook line.
Given recent top-end rivals with 18.4" screens it's possible 17" will disappear to make room for that maybe.

BUT - the imac is not on the go / or exposed to the lighting conditions that the portable is. So the need for a matte display is even higher on a laptop. Couple to this, the general ease of replacement of laptop displays, and lower cost of the panels...

Not to mention that the numpad is used as transport control in nearly all music applications like Cubase, Reason etc. Those are hopeless to use without a numpad.

this is not gonna be true IMO!
i would expect a macbook pro with
GeForce 97/9600M GT GDDR3 with either 9100, 9300 or 9400 intergrated
2.8GHz Core 2 Duo at least
4GB DDR3 RAM.
With the price not above $3500

Glossy

Hopefully apple is not stupid and will have a matte option, but if not Steve is seriously jeopardizing their sales to photographers etc. :(. I think I would happily sacrifice the proposed Blu-Ray drives for matte . Well I want to see what other people think about this and their experiences with colour and light reflections on glossey [I will also search the forum so no need to point me to any links], I'm certain its just apple haven't really tested any with the matte so people are asuming there are none. We have to remember we still don't know anything for definate till later today.

Exactly. And if you ever play games on your laptop, you will also need decent cursor keys in a workable disposition - or a numpad... And if you work with spreadsheets, the numpad probably gets more use than the regular keys...
Actually, that's why people who also use their laptop at home usually hook it to an external monitor, a real mouse and a real keyboard... There is just no substitute for a real mouse, a real keyboard and a 24" monitor...

I agree... I don't own a MBP so am not fully familiar but from experience on people at work and MBPs at the Apple Store, I have to admit that I can see where these pros are coming from. The Glossy is not only really reflective, it also completely ruins some colours... Please Apple... Don't make us all switch to Dell and HP

If there's space in the new 17" (or 18", should Apple shift their niches) then a keypad would be a good addition for me. I never got used to the function keys in laptops. Now that Apple's erasing the function key labels, a la MacBook, a keypad would be nice. Useful for collegiate, scientific/medical, and even gaming applications! :D
