It's one of the most confusing one's I've seen.

I don't understand why all these different sites have all these "reliable sources" that are giving conflicting info.

Like I said. It's a classic Apple set-up.

Watch.

You hit the nail on the head

The first image (the open macBook/pro whatever) seems to be genuine, if you download the image and open it with preview and go to tools -> inspector to get the image details, it says that the photo is shot using an iphone it also shows the GPS loation where it was taken (somewhere in CA), but no details are available for the second image showing the closed notebook besides the box so the second one might be photoshopped

where do you download that image?

the image from engadget doesnt have location info.

Perhaps Apple is trying to tell people that if you are a graphics designer, you shouldn't using a laptop (Pro or otherwise), you should really get the Powermac. It is faster and supports multiple drives.

Since when did creative professionals suddenly become desk-bound? There is a huge user-base of creative professionals who depend on mobility, power and a matte screen: freelance designers and traveling photographers, to name a few examples.

It is a bit disappointing if there is no matte option. For me, I have an aging 12" Powerbook and NEED to move onto an Intel system, so I will get one.

My options would be:

1. Get an overlay for the screen that makes it matte (anybody uses these and can let me know what they are like?)

2. Just use my existing two 20" Apple Cinema Displays that have matte screens and just use the laptop screen as a palette area.

The bonuses which would offset the disappointment of no matte option would be:

1. Higher resolution displays like on the 17" version.

2. SSD option!

3. Glass touchpad -- why glass? Could this be a display section to contain graphics? Wishful thinking, perhaps.

4. Dual graphics chips

5. Blu-Ray option

I don't really have a strong preference for matte or glossy, as I don't have a problem with either on a laptop. I do find the glossy finish of my big 1080p plasma distracting at times, but that's slightly different because you can't easily adjust the screen angle by a degree or two to reduce reflections like you can on a laptop. I have both finishes at the moment on laptops, and for software development, it makes no difference whatsoever to me. If they have decided to drop matte screens then you would assume they have done their market research and estimated that it will not affect sales unduly.

Either they're both photoshopped or they're both real. Why would someone upload a real picture AND shop one? It doesn't make sense. Unless one of them is uploaded by someone else and put the <3 JR on it.

None of this makes any sense. Low Range macbook to stay exactly the same? WTF? no 17incher to be introduced - but new MBP 15 and MB will look totally different? WTF?

Seriously WTF is Apple thinking? This doesnt seem like them. Hopefully its a load of tripe - We may be surprised tomorrow. (or tonight for me)

EDIT: just thought of something. Maybe the reason why the 17 inches looks isnt being upgraded is the fact that thats going to stay as the MacBook Pro.
Maybe the MBP 15 and MB are just going to be MacBook 13 and 15inch? Of course with the 15" to have discrete graphics, while the MB should have integrated Nvidia graphics.

Engadget claim that the new MacBook Pro will have "two full-on Nvidia GPUs", what exactly does this mean?

Means they're a bit stupid and Gruber's a bit misguided (he's not a hardware guy at all so that's excusable on his part): the MBPs will sport the same MCP79 chipset the MacBook will, and the MCP's Integrated Graphics are roughly equivalent in perfs to a 9300M or 9400M.

Therefore the MB will have ~9400M of graphic power, and since the MBP will have a separate, discrete 9600M chip, it'll have both a 9400M and a 9600M.

Now what could that lead to? Well to Hybrid SLI. Now I doubt GeForce Boost (where both IGP and discrete GPU work on the same thing, equivalent to regular SLI) is going to work as the 9400M and the 9600M are definitely not equivalent in power and you need roughly the same power in the GPUs for this scheme to work, the MBP should have access to HybridPower: when the discrete GPU isn't sollicited much (e.g. not in a 3D app/game/whatever), it gets shut down and the IGP takes on the job, which saves a lot of power (as discrete GPUs are very big power draw and you can completely shut the chip down).

Basically, it'd mean that a MBP used in a non-3D setting would have the same power draw as a regular macbook (with equivalent CPU and other peripherals that is), boosting battery life a lot

thumbs down glossy :( I've got a 24" Alu iMac, glossy screen but would prefer the matt. The lamp style iMac had a superb matt screen. Oh well!

Why are engadget saying the MBP will be a graphics powerhouse? Will the 9400M and 9600M GT work together?

This seems exactly like Apple when they're transitioning: A huge mess for a short while.

This seems exactly like Apple in recent years: Going all lowest consumer denominator, nixing features and choice ad nauseum.

hear hear

It doesn't matter if you're a PROFESSIONAL or a MORON or a HAMBURGER salesman or ANYTHING, if you don't like glossy, because it's a stupid stupid STUPID fad then this would make this rumour pretty unpleasant.

I for one, have 0 interest in not being able to see what's on my screen due to stupid reflections, just so some company can try to sell a product because it looks 'slick and shiny'
It was stupid when Sony made the Vaio's like that and it's stupid when any company does it, period.

If I purchased a laptop from Dell, Apple, Sony or any company and I was silly enough (doh) to find it came with a glossy only option, I would return the unit as faulty as in my opinion it is _un-usable_ period.

Stupidest trend the industry has ever latched on to, ever.

Hear Hear I agree TOTALLY.
What is the point in swinting, trying to see what's on the screen, straining your eyes? What's the point in fighting against reflections in am light airy studio when matt could solve all those problems?

And to those who say "If you're a real professional you don't use a laptop screen" then you really don't understand the pro's business or lifestyle do you.

We need a laptop for versatility. More and more clients want to sit and talk in their environment about a project, a designer (especially the company owner such as me) wants to be able to take the laptop home to continue working on a project and meet the deadline...the list is endless.

Imagine sitting with a client offering a professional service, discussing designs or the way a website works....

and they can't see the screen! They say "Gawd, what a terrible screen" and they are thinking "Hey this company bought a cheap gimiky laptop, you can't even see the screen and they come out to me with this..."

Not very PRO.

Only Glossy Screens?!?!?!

No Matte finish screens!! Well I guess I'll be buying re-furbs from now on then.

Either that or I'll have to buy a new one of the current ones from the store before they disappear.

my wishlist:
keep the design
higher display res MATTE optional ofc
speed bumb
sleeker and thinner

thats it... that hard to realise it?
for the mbp ofc

FTA: " - $1299: 2.0 GHz, 2 GB memory, 160 GB disk "

Erm... The current $1299 2.4 GHz MacBook also sports 2 GB of RAM and a 160 GB HD. So essentially they're keeping the same price point, yet knocking off 400 MHz and FireWire while adding an nVidia chipset. That makes no sense whatsoever.

Exactly !!

If these details are confirmed later today .... what to do then ?
Buy today the old macbook ?
I'm a bit lost here.

Another example of "if it's posted on Page 1, it must be true" running wild. Until it's announced, treat it with a pinch of salt..

I seriously doubt Apple will have glossy-only displays on the MBP, they couldn't afford to do that to their pro consumer base. If they do, watch 1 of 2 things happen.. 1) people switch to a different system e.g Windows laptop which Apple will see from sales figures 2) They moan but still buy the MBP, Apple does nothing so they go out and buy an external screen.

Refurbs are fine now, but a year down the line when the next MBP comes out people would have to embrace the glossy (if Apple choose to dump the matte).

Don't forget; Apple changed the iMac to glossy-only.. it hasn't stopped people buying them. Even if you want one, you'd be silly to wait out the matte option on an iMac.. it's gone, and people have accepted it. It could be going the same way, we'll find out later.

Anyway.. I'd like to buy a 17" MBP, so it would be a bummer if they are delayed by 2 or 3 weeks but I'm still excited to see if this is the real deal.. the new look, I mean. Also, the glass clickable-trackpad could be a bad idea.. but then again, I'll judge once I've used it for a while.

LOL, no - just no.
SOME people like glossy screens, most people I know who actually have a glossy screen were disapointed with them when they got them unwittingly - some end up liking it, some convince themselves they like it and some outright hate it.

It's defective, period - the product is unusable, it's like putting some kind of weird stylish foam over your speakers for aesthetics but in reality it stuffs up your sound.
Ridiculous

I have yet to meet someone who likes their glossy screen. Just today I saw a friend at a local cafe with her new air. She is a writer and did not worry about the gloss. Until today, even when she changed seats to get out of the sun she was still getting too much reflection and could not see the screen. A guy I used to work with ended up going to the auto parts store and bought some window tint to try and subdue the glare.....

Problem is Apple's target market likes gloss. There for everything has to be glossy and come with a stupid colored iPod.

windows Drivers Support

What about windows XP/ Vista Drivers Support for this "Hybrid SLi" VGA? and power commutation?

I think that people using boot camp will have a lot of problem real soon....

Anyone thinking the same, or just me?

What's Gruber's "source" that makes him a "confirmation"?

I hate to be the voice of reason here, but how exactly does Gruber confirm or deny anything involving the new MBPs? He's reading the Engadget article and giving his take on their statements in a detailed fashion. This same Engadget article, has the exact same photos as people here were claiming to be fakes not even three hours ago. I actually read that DF piece before it showed up here, and it was just like any other DF article where Gruber speculates on something -- just that, speculation.

Just because he didn't write "I think" before every sentence doesn't mean he has one of the new machines on his desk and can confirm anything he's saying as true. He's just giving his opinion. When writing in an active tone of voice stating opinions as though they are facts is entirely normal. Especially when you're writing about somehthing rather sensational or trying to really grab your reader's attention. His opinions are well based in the way things have been heading, but let's remember John Gruber is a blog writer, a professional blog writer, but still a journalist who is really in the same position as the rest of us when it comes to information. If he was one of those priviaged few journalists who actually gets new hardware pre-release (like David Pogue or Mossburg) he would be under an NDA, just like they always are, and unable to actually give any info as fact before launch.

John Gruber's opinions are very good, and often times correct, but he holds no special source that gives him the ability to actually state whether a rumor is true or not anymore than Kevin Rose or 9to5 Mac can. All that is happening right now is a bunch of Blog writers are posting the same photos and roughly the same rumors, and then pointing at each other as their source of "confirmation". For all you guys know the same "source" is going to every rumor website under a differnet name and telling a slightly different story. This is the internet after all. Is that "worker in an obscure Pacific Rim component supplier" or "inside source in Cupertino" really in the Orient or California as they claim?

Smell that? Disappointment in the morning!

I'll be skipping if they keep the low end as is.....I'd be kinda shocked those, these rumors seem very upApple. The lines would be very very messy.

Hopefully we'll see some good stuff later today!

Twelve price point rumours?

MacBook x 3

MacBook Air x 2

MacBook Pro Matte x 3

MacBook Pro Glossy x 3

Equals 11

+1 for new display @ $899?

Just a random thought.

Why in 200+ post has nobody talked about the weight issue? A mbp already has some heft to it when carrying it around for long periods of time, but a mbp with a big sheet of glass in it will be VERY heavy... and the glass has to be fairly thick to keep from being too delicate...
Apple needs a surprise event since the last few have been lackluster, so maybe this is a case of them just pouring out false rumors except for a few select bits of true info (multiple gpu sounds promising) as a way to wow everyone today...
but let's talk about this weight issue... and this rumored huge battery... once again HEAVY!!!

6hours to go... chill till then?
than complain or cry out of pleasure ... we will c

maybe the battery will just last longer due to better tech?
its not sure if it will get heavier -_-
