Oh and I hate glossy with a passion.

Its cheap and tacky and does rubbish color representation.

Please matt option PLEASE.

Well, sort of cool and sort of lame. At least if Apple does keep one of the current Macbooks at a $999 price the refurbs should go down to $799 and my Mom will be able to afford one and stop calling me to fix her Toshiba.

Not having a DVD burner in ANY computer standard these days is inane, though. Hopefully they rectify that.

EDIT: RE: glossy. I love my glossy iMac. I wasn't sure about it at first but unless you are doing print work or something that requires perfect color accuracy, everything looks better on the bright glossy/glass display.

Sorry guys but I have many glossy screens under many lighting conditions and the only time I see glare is when the computer is off. Otherwise I see bright, crisp, sharp contrasty text and images.

Well, if you frequently work with black backgrounds you don't get that kind of benefit.

adc are just average but the price is in eizos league...
if u really want a "pro" display i guess there is no brand better than eizo

thanks for clearing that up then.....
But the ACD's are still gorgeous :p (only that would make me pay the difference over a dell.... sorry, i'm really picky about style and design )

Wait so when you say that the macbooks would have 9300 dedicated... does that mean its better than the 8600?

I CAN SAVE SOME MONEYS!!!

only if thats the case of course.

EDIT: woops had to change to 9300

I would imagine this would not be the case--the (9300m) low end range of a newer generation will likely remain behind the 8600m. Does Tom's Hardware (I don't even know if they still do that) or anything have benchmarks on this sort of thing yet?

I'm so unhappy with what I have read here regarding the new apple products.
I don't feel happy like I was yesterday. I guess my expectation was too high. :(

See, if they did this sort of thing that they're doing with the MBP's, I wouldn't call foul. Macbooks and Macbook Airs can be Apple's little playground for trying out new features...glossy displays, multitouch pads, whatever. They're consumer laptops, if they want to offer strange new features, they're welcome to.

But.

You. Do. Not. Touch. My. Pro. Line. I hope a lot of these rumors are false about the glossy-only screen, as that would make it a no-go for designers and photographers who need the color accuracy. Although to be fair, a laptop screen is not the best tool for color accuracy in the first place; a dedicated, calibrated desktop monitor would be best. But still! It seems like Apple are shoving every little "cool" idea that they can into this new Pro lineup, and it is going to bite them in the ass hard when none of their creative-industry customers deign to purchase them. It's a trend that began with the over-gloss unnecessary additions they made in 10.5, and I now see continuing in horrid fashion.

Get your **** together Apple, and realize that you have different lineups for a reason. They cater to different markets.

Backwards thinking...companies NEED to put the new, fancy aspects into their Pro and high-end lines because they want to drive people to the higher price point.

And to be completely honest, I would say that the majority of MBP users are NOT using it for photography, video editing, etc. Apple knows this.

This is why I bought my parents and iMac. It was their first mac and I haven't had a repair call since :) Only a few remote desktop thru iChat connections to show them around the computer. Its great.

well only glossy means i'll carefully look at it. i hate glossy and if i'm not positively surprised by the screen my PB G4 will have to do for another year or so.:(

sorry consoleboi, but I was not aware of the above fact (?) really thought the ACD's were comparable to eizo's and professional samsungs

If you're interested in getting a multi-input/multi-use monitor, the Dell offers the best price/performance. I wouldn't mind the new Dell 30" with decent scaler when the price is around 1,000 :)

Man, you guys certainly know how to complain about an item that hasnt even been released or announced yet.

The difference between Matte and Glossy screens is not that large. It's like the 2g iPhone screen versus the 3g screen... people complain out their rear ends, but in the long run, people just learn to accept the new changes. I really doubt a glossy or matte only screen would keep many people from upgrading.

The first image (the open macBook/pro whatever) seems to be genuine, if you download the image and open it with preview and go to tools -> inspector to get the image details, it says that the photo is shot using an iphone it also shows the GPS loation where it was taken (somewhere in CA), but no details are available for the second image showing the closed notebook besides the box so the second one might be photoshopped

GREAT PIC!!

I'm not really enjoying the glossy screen and the black bezel around the screen.. perhaps it will change my mind when I see it in person..

Yes, as a lowest common denominator consumer it really doesn't matter, but most "pros" have purchased apps with mac-licenses and if they're someplace "biggish" people will have to be retrained. It's not as easy as simply purchasing another brand. No, it's a full-fledged migration.

Not to mention the few applications, like Aperture or Final Cut, that only work on OSX... Retraining a whole staff from Aperture to Lightroom until they are as productive with the later is very expensive...

Also, there is the problem of platform lock. If I want to target the iPhone, I *have* to use MacOS X in order to use the SDK. There is no alternative there. If not, I would just avoid spending $2000 on a laptop and use my much more powerful (and less expensive) custom-built PC for that purpose...

And the Hackintosh is not an option either. You can't rely on this kind of solution for productive work, where even a half day of "problems" can cost you a lot of money...

4 houres and 20 minutes to go, and we'll all get our answers!

make that 6 hours and 20 minutes - let's not forget that Jobs will be talking about iPod sales, all the new features of Leopard, the 2050 countries in which the iPhone is now sold, the iPhone's new killer feature (auto-correction that can be disabled, in stores by Christmas for an upgrade price of 10$), how well the NBC HD series are selling in the one country where they are available (but which, incidentally, is the only one that Apple gives a crap about) BEFORE there'll be any kinds of announcements of new notebooks that will be available in the US next week and in Europe before Christmas.

Maybe it will look better in person, but I would hate for them to have black keys on the Pro.. I see that on PC laptops everyday. Personal preference. I was thinking about upgrading, but if these rumors are true then I will stick to with my black Macbook. It has been great.

So the rumours about lower price points may be untrue and Apple are actually INCREASING the price of the entry level MacBook again? Certainly, if it's true of course, it's not the news I was hoping for. :(

Good point. I service Mac laptops for a living and I think I've come across maybe two (I think) glossy MacBook Pro's in the last two years.

So . . . is the implication that matte MacBook Pros present a bigger service problem than glossy's? :D

Is there no expectation that Apple is market driven? If there is a market for matte MacBook Pros, then one would expect Apple would be wanting to cash in on that demand. Maybe a vocal market in MacRumors and other channels will get Apple's attention.

I didn't mean it wrong in way way. It's just what my mother used to tell me years and years ago when I wouldn't eat my veggies. I wasn't sure how many people would get that joke, but now I feel better for clarifying it.

I'm getting the joke... off course ;)
but I just want that MBP grrr:D

Final Cut, that only work on OSX... Retraining a whole staff from Aperture to Lightroom until they are as productive with the later is very expensive...

that's the very reason why we never went with Aperture. While we all prefer working on Mac OS, we'd never settle for a solution that isn't available on other platforms.
