If anything, the lack of FW should be the killer on this, not the display. You can hook that computer up to any display that you want, matte or otherwise, and be fine. But if no FW...well, that kills it for me.

"If anything"? Why can't people accept that this is a subjective thing? I couldn't care less about Firewire going. Yet I'm not calling anyone complaining about it a whiner...

Notebooks without Firewire are as common as glossy screens, though. The majority of people doesn't care about them. USB works just as well... The same arguments apply! Yet Firewire is a show stopper and glossy haters are just whining? Come on people. Don't make your preferences absolute...

do you really think

Does anyone honestly think in this economic environment that Apple will release notebooks only at higher price points than the current ones??? No way---there is a sub $1,000 notebook coming today. Guaranteed. ;)

Glossy only would be the stupidest thing Apple has done since overpricing the Cube. Glossy only on the MB and iMac is already stupid, but at least a logical argument could be made for that decision because it seemed like they were reserving the matte finish for their high end machines to give them more perceived value. But to completely eliminate matte as an option altogether? That's just moronic! For many people, glossy screen is a deal breaker.

Apple doesn't have a monopoly on the OS X market anymore, people can now install OS X onto many different non-Apple computers. Even though my friend has been a loyal Apple user forever, he was about to buy a non-Apple laptop because a netbook form factor is perfect for his needs. I convinced him to wait till today to see if Apple came out with anything to serve this huge new market. Now not only do I not hear anything about an Apple netbook, but I also find they're completely eliminating the glossy screen! If true, my next laptop will be a non-Apple OSX86 machine that I install OS X onto.

EDIT:
p.s. I am NOT a professional graphic artist of any flavor, I'm just a regular user who cannot stand glossy. And there are TONS of people out there who feel the same as me on this.
Right go ahead and build your hackintosh. :D

what are the chances of actually buying a mbp 15" today?
and the lastest rumor on those specs?

go to e.mag class (oh what so fun) or buy a new mbp (perhaps)

They removed the optical drive from the macbook and, tada! a thinner machine, wow! what an innovation! huh
What we want is a smaller (12") pro. Kinda the 12"powerbook and not a macbook on a weight loss program where they take out one of your kidneys to make you feel thinner and lighter
What you want, if Apple listened to half the crap being spewed in this forum, they will be bankrupt now.

well i guess so much for blu-ray... cant wait to see the final product..

cant really decide between the MB or MBP at this point.. thats not "competitive pricing" when i can run hackintosh on a 700 acer with the same specs ( calm down, I wouldnt really do it ) but thats where the point stands.

I also work with photography and design and a matte screen is 100 times more efficient then a stupid glossy 1. My g/fs laptops a glossy dell and i just want to smash it.. its really hard to see if your not at the right angle bc of the stupid glare...
back to mac.. I really hope the engineering in this glass pad is worked out and easily usable.. i mean yes.. you can always use an external mouse.. but not every situation alows for it.. might end up buying a used MBP with matte screen...

the whole video card upgrades cool, so technically, it may be faster then the 2.1 bc of the dedicated memory from the video card. I think ill be smart and wait a week.. i waited 2 months, i can handle 1 more week and see what the "reviews" are like and then make a move from there...

lets hope for the best guys..

How many people would want a nice, small & affordable mac netbook?

I think they'd sell a gazzillion of them. In this economy, it would be stupid for them not to release one.

I have a 20" imac and don't necessarily NEED a portable. But if they released something more affordable, I'd find a way to get one. I'm sure many others would as well. $899 sounds ok, but I'd like to see something lower. $699 would be phenomenal.

Netbooks are $300 less so I guess that price would be about right.

These macbook differences seem too messy for apple. Im pretty sure the price points are off. Seems wierd too that apple would have an updated line of macbooks, and keep the older model for the 1099 price point

Why? Apple did similar when the first 12" and 17" Powerbooks came out but did not update the 15" until months later.

You're a DJ => you work with music pros nor image pros, why would music pros give a damn about glossy or matte? Was it too hard to understand that "pros" in that case meant "pros in image-related fields of art"?

Credibility = 0.

I don't think I've heart of many iphone 2G cracking or breaking, and the displays were glass.

No it wasn't hard to understand. I'm a REAL DJ. Meaning I make MONEY as DJ. Meaning I do not work for beer for 12 hours at time in sweating clubs.

I do weddings, and at every event, I work closely with PHOTOGRAPHERS. MOBILE PHOTOGRAPHERS. The only ones who RELY ON A LAPTOP. Get the picture.

If you know anything about Mac users, the majority of which are NOT switchers and have been using them for a while, FW is a big deal. The number of peripherals a long-time Mac user has that utilize FW over USB is huge. It's a bigger deal breaker than you think. Don't make YOUR position absolute.

You do realize you are talking about Apple. Since when have they been concerned about price points or the "economy".

This is confirming my fears that Apple is really caring less about its computer business lately. The "Walmart of technology" name seems to be pretty appropriate. This update seems so half-a##ed and disappointing. I'm still going to buy one of whatever they put out (because I still love OS X and think even this leaked design is better than most), but I'm really rather angry that it apparently won't have been worth my 10-month wait.

Don't be dramatic.

Good riddance. If you're willing to leave a great OS, a great user experience, and great quality hardware and go back to Windows then you were never meant to be here.

You have to be kidding me. Great quality hardware and OS means nothing if it doesn't fit the users' needs. I could sell you a great quality block of wood, but it most likely won't fill your needs as a portable computer. Don't judge other people's computing needs based on your Apple-rose-colored glasses.

I thought we learned during the Great Processor Speed War last century that chip speed is not "the end all and be all" of computer performance.

Yeah, but still... The average consumer doesn't look at it in that way!

WHY would they do that?!   :(

I WAITED FOREVER AND I REALLY HOPE THESE AREN'T TRUE!

I don't know WHY this obsession with glossy.

Because it's a great business idea : it lets you sell overpriced crap. Before glossy, if you wanted a LCD with decent contrast and blacks, you actually had to work on your pannel, for instance by getting away from the cheap TN pannels.
The glossy layout allows for higher contrasts and lets you get away with crappy TN pannels. Of course, these contrasts exists mostly in the lab (or in the dark), because anyplace else, you will have reflections and reflections kill contrast. But noone cares about reality and the contrast number in the spec sheet will look nice...

In the same line, that also explain why you can now get suntanned from most LCD. There are two ways to increase contrast: getting richer blacks or just pushing the backlight behind the whites. The later is much cheaper and also makes the screen standout in the shop. Of course, it also kills your eyes (and battery) and you will have to turn down the light in real use. If also kills the black that will look grayish. But on the spec sheet, it looks great, put enough watts behind that LCD, and you can achieve about any contrast value you want... And that number will win sales, along with these 1000W speakers (RMS, under peak conditions, during 1ns and with the speaker exploding after that) and the like.

2-Cents

Well, the new MacBook Pro won't do much for me in that I have one of the very first generation units (week-12) and it has served me well on multiple trips from Arizona to D.C. to Germany, Italy and France. On my last trip I ended up using my G3 iPhone about 50-percent of the time so the whole portable computing thing’ is becoming a little less cumbersome. Still, I will be more interested in either an updated MacAir or whatever Mac gets stuffed inside the rumored dockable’ iMac.
Regards,
~DD

Steve Jobs is a genious....

He is the only one who can sell that crap and make it look wonderful after his speech.

I really do not know what is going on at Apple, surely they are relaying on the fact there are not clones that can proof they are doing barely nothing to lead regarding technology.

It seems all the brains are going towards the iPhone.

I am sure the next mac pro revisions are gonna be as sad as this one.

I better keep my quad G5 for a little longer.

I still don't understand the animosity towards glossy screens. For the 99.99% of us that don't do graphic design (the userbase has shifted, folks), the glossy screens provide great contrast on video, look great with games, etc. A choice would be nice, but for most people glossy is the way to go anyway.

ok guys c'mon... if all these rumors r true, this will be the first time steve will really really disapoint me... i really cant imagine that there will only b glossy screens, as apple's products r ment to be working stations, and these glossy screen would b totally unusable for many ppl... personally im not sure if i care glossy or not, ill look at it in real life, but i really cant imagine that apple would let down all you guys working with videos, pictures etc etc... im looking forward to the even, thou with mixed emotions...

You know. When I first saw this picture. I couldn't make it out.
I thought it looked like my dashboard in my car. It has a striking resemblance
to the dashboard display.

looking at all the speculation...well..I actually didn't read everything but try this---compare what's happened in your nearest Apple store....now outside US it might be different but around where I am in the midwest you go into an Apple store and what have they done...what had been a free advice and consultation now is something you have to pay for, if you want to learn something you now have to hand over another $100 and that learning something in reference to any Apple product you also have to hand over another $100...your talking at least $200 if not $300 for services that years back cost nothing! Others have also said that Apple appears to be going off the deep end with their products and so forth and your damn right...Apple is becoming as crapy as Microsoft already is and eventually Apple is going to be all crap whether you look at this from a cost view or product performance and adaptable range of connectors its going down hill and Jobs is still thinking he can dump his crap on the suckers who have bought without looking at what they bought first....and I am not saying Apple hasn't come out with great products...they have except that last few years Jobs has gotten to fat a head....hell I go into my nearest Apple store and immediately someone semi-greets me and then immediately asks do I have a One on One card and down the line and when I say no to all of these ripoff costs....suddenly I'm standing there alone and then another "toughguy" that works at this store huffs and puffs at me well what do you want...since I don't have any of the cards apparently to them I have no valid reason to be in the store...I look at this and then all your comments and if all true Apples going to not just tank to the bottom but take as many customers down with it....because Jobs has gotten a FAT head about himself...but we'll see and I hope I am wrong.............
Right because you want everything for cheap and free, it's Apple's fault, they are in to make money like any other company like Microsoft.

You guys obviously haven't been submitted to the Reality Distortion Field™ yet :D

Just wait 3 hours and 20 minutes and all your worries about the new Macbooks will magically disappear :p
