As you can see in this triple-confirmed picture, the camera is now behind the glass, which makes it impossible for them to have a matte screen, or the cam image would be nothing but a grey blur.

I see no reason why they couldn't make that tiny circle of glass in front of the camera uncoated.

Okay so obviously quicktime and DVDs will be more efficient on the new dual-GPU MacBook, and in 9 months time Snow Leopard will give it a significant leap forward

I somehow doubt that...
You don't need dual GPU for playing DVD. The CPU is fine for that, MPEG2 decoding is very lightweight, it was built for that. And any decent GPU, even integrated (even Intel I suspect), is plenty enough for the job.
Even 720p movies will play fine on even the discrete GPU alone. I use the lowly nVidia 7300 on my HTPC, along with a Core 2 Duo 6600, and the whole computer is barely stressed even while playing Bluray.

Besides, even SLI between two identical GPU doesn't work that well. Just ask the PC gamers how great SLI proved in real conditions. It's not worthless, it might be the only solution to play your brand new game on your 30" monitor will all options to the max. But other than that, it's not an extraordinary technology.

The main point on a notebook will be that it will let you turn off the discrete GPU when you don't need it and save battery power...

- video encoding, iTunes importing, iMovie usage, photo resizing, mathematical functions etc will all be much faster.

That will mainly come from the discrete GPU anyway...

mmm.. I'm not too keen on the idea of the trackpad having no clickable mouse button. What about accidental 'taps' onto the pad and it starts selecting things? Give me a button any day.

Rumours that are complete with pricing, photos, and full specifications kind of spoil the excitement.

It's like opening your presents before Christmas.

Can you people just calm down like 2 seconds o maybe 8 hours before you start hating apple, this is just rumors... I dou bt that apple would shoot themselves in the foot like some of these rumors are saying they are. Just wait until the real presentation then you can start with all your hating =p I will plase an order tonight, i need a new computer!

Wise words, I'm taking a chill pill right now before I burn out.

An unfunny joke. Same footprint as the regular MacBook.
They removed the optical drive from the macbook and, tada! a thinner machine, wow! what an innovation! huh
What we want is a smaller (12") pro. Kinda the 12"powerbook and not a macbook on a weight loss program where they take out one of your kidneys to make you feel thinner and lighter

I still prefer matte, I put up with the glossy LCD on my MacBook, but that more like a lack of choice.

Why? Even overhead fluorescent lamps can cast glare on the glossy screen. So not as bad as glare from a window, at least the lamps don't move. But it still means positioning myself and the screen carefully in a way so that the screen doesn't reflect the lamps overhead. Then on dark areas of the screen, I see myself...

Then again, maybe I just have a lousy office.

LOL! This is funny! All these people crying over a glossy finish....

I said it twice already I'll say it again:

IF YOU ARE A REAL PROFESSIONAL YOU DONT DO COLOR CRITICAL WORK ON A LAPTOP SCREEN

If you do, then it obviously isnt that color critical so quit crying. Hook your laptop to an external monitor (just like I and many many others do) and do all your color critical stuff on there! Simple!

That´s what I´m thinking as well. I will use a laptop for on the road editing etc, but serious and critical stuff back at base on the MP with Matte screens

Those of you bitching about glossy screens - please raise your hand if you've ever actually *used one* in a production environment?

well yeah i have and it sucks. having to turn off all the lights and close your curtains so you can get rid of reflections is annoying at best. And i now use a matte screen and its just.....how to put this?.....better

My girlfriend is in her third year studies of graphic design and she's using an iMac 24" at home for all her work. It's glossy and she doesn't seem to suffer from it being glossy? What in fact is there to hate about a glossy screen? I just don't seem to get it all.

Well, maybe she's fine with it because she hadn't the privilege to try a matte screen. Myself I have always used matte screens and when I recently bought a new Macbook Pro 17" with glossy screen it was a total and utterly horror to work with when compared to my old Macbook Pro 17" matte screen.

long time lurker here, first post....

Those of you bitching about glossy screens - please raise your hand if you've ever actually *used one* in a production environment?

*crickets*

Yeah, thought so. Matte Screens have turned into this year's way to show that you're "in the know" - kinda like saying there's NO WAY you could work full time on a MacBook Air, and you NEED the power (******** - we're all video editors now?) of a Pro if you want to do "real" work.

"Yeah, I'm a pro. I went Matte. I'm ****ing hardcore, me"

If you've ever used a matte screen in an environment where glare is a problem, you know that gloss actually IMPROVES matters - you get a specular reflection which you can move out of the way (esp on a notebook), as opposed to a diffuse reflection which just blows out the whole screen. This is incredibly evident outside - could NEVER use my old PowerBook outdoors, do so with my MacBook all the time.

Quit whining. Stop listening to what other ill-informed people are telling you to think and produce on a glossy screen for a while. You'll see it makes zero difference for 99% of the time, and for that 1% where you get glare, try a matte in the same place - you're going to prefer how the glossy handles it.

Unless you're Stevie Wonder.

I agree! that was exactly what is was thinking!
Just as long as the screen is bright enough!! But I don't think that is a problem with LED screens.... I just hope they put those between that shiny black bezel.

But that does not take away the fact that choice is a good thing!
Apple makes you choose between glossy or a little sandpaper adventure :p

The prettier something is, the less use I'll get out of it. I always think of laptops as a work computer - and doing work exposes you to accidents. Something that isn't all chrome and glass / polished aluminum that will look like poop once scratched or dented. Sometimes, I miss flat-black-matte plastic - because it can get beat up, and still look new.

If I got this - I'd be afraid to use it. :(

Presumably it wouldn't be impossible to have a matte screen with a small glossy circle just for the camera though.

More importantly, ever since SJ took control of Apple, it's been all about form over function, and the glossy screen issue is a clear cut case of that.

Is that a valid reason for going glossy-only? No, if function dictated the design, they would keep the camera outside the glass like they did before, but they felt it was more important to go with this design. Just like they think it's more important to have a thin iPhone with a flush surface on the back, than to have a user-replaceable battery.

I see no reason why they couldn't make that tiny circle of glass in front of the camera uncoated.

Hmm, I was led to believe that it is the LCD itself thats glossy not the glass on the front which is matte. This is how it is on the Alu iMac. The new notebooks must be different.

Steve, just give me

Built in 3G Antenna
Blu-Ray Drive
Silver Keys
Matte Screen

and you will have my money pronto

for the love of god, is that asking too much?

while your at it, crank out a 10" Air too

Please "Think Different" Steve

Is it 2009 yet?

That's great if you do fine art photography. If you do reports, news photography, press photography in general etc. your notebook is your main tool. It's total bull***t to claim that pros don't do serious work on their MBPs

kis

Maybe they though they could make you treat your computer just like an iPhone or an iPod, and go out and buy all sorts of silicone skins and protective films, sold with a 99% profit margin @ Apple Store.

The Alu iMacs have matte LCDs with a big piece of glossy glass in front of them. Current MB & MBA have no glass.

So true! Those early 2000s laptops with the black ABS plastic cases! Those never look bad no matter how much abuse they go through.

Meh! Even the BlackBook plastic is lame compared to those. :p

macbook glossy ≠ glass

the macbook's current screen is not as flat as glass, so it's a little more difficult to get it right so it won't glare.
(but maybe the difference is not that big.... don't know for shure, cant do comparison right now)
