Joke

No matte display for a pro laptop? If it turns out to be true it will be the biggest FAIL I've seen in a while.

reflections of the way things used to be...

hey all - first.time caller long.time listener here,

first off i gotta say how much fun it is seeing so many of y'all freaking out like the sky is about to fall - better than television, this is!

here's my Q: how would a glossy screen affect those of us who work in darker environments - i.e. clubs? would the flashing and constant change of lighting conditions make the glossy screen more difficult to work with? i'm using my MB black for sets but now that i'm getting more into production it's time to upgrade.

where ableton goes, i goes...

Hi, Swedish user here whos thinking of buying my first MacBook Pro this autumn! :)

Im really hoping of a built in Blu-ray driver though, since Ive got a lot of BD-movies, so Im crossing my thumbs to see at least one model with this application announced later today!

Unfortunately, I read this on the Appleinsider website:

"On its blogs, AppleInsider also noted that a new 17-inch MacBook Pro is unlikely to surface tomorrow (though one exists in the labs), a bumped MacBook Air may not be immediately available for purchase, and that Blu-ray drives may not happen."
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/10/13/new_photo_reveals_macbook_pro_with_black_display_bezel.html

But these are still only rumours, so Im still hoping for a 15 inch MBP version, with Blu-ray and display port (HDMI)! Please dont let me down, Steve... ;)

glossy only? WTF?

Seriously - if that's true, they can count me out. They lost me on the iMac already. Don't get me wrong: I don't mind glossy screens for watching movies but most definitely not on a pro notebook sold at such a high price. No other manufacturers do glossy-only on pro devices.

In Switzerland, workplace safety regulations even rule out the use of glossy screens at work.

kis

Maybe matte is an option. otherwise the new MBP's are an ***** joke. The old ones are starting to look better by the hour.

This doesn't make any sense. No 17" and keep the white 2.1? Please, since when does apple do these things. I can buy a 2.1ghz MB for 800 tonight, why would I buy it for $999 plus tax tomorrow...apple's not dumb, at least I hope not

If Gruber is right about leaving around the old models while introducing new ones, this update will truly be beyond belief in all the wrong ways. It's almost as if Apple is saying, "Yeah, we know how highly anticipated and necessary these updates are, but hey, we're going to just screw around until we feel like actually changing all of our notebooks."

Redesigned MacBooks should have been introduced at MWSF 2008. And no, the MacBook Air does not effing count.

Seriously. I hope we're getting a lot of faulty info. The notebook lineup with look jacked up with new and old models all over the place.

I have hope that I won't be disappointed. It would actually take a lot to disappoint me, but Apple sure is reaching there..

Damn. The battery says it's assembled in China. So much for a new "made in the U.S.A." manufacturing process.

IF YOU ARE A REAL PROFESSIONAL YOU DONT DO COLOR CRITICAL WORK ON A LAPTOP SCREEN

If you do, then it obviously isnt that color critical so quit crying. Hook your laptop to an external monitor (just like I and many many others do) and do all your color critical stuff on there! Simple!

Actually, I'm not a professional, photography is just a (serious) hobby... But I'm a professional programmer. And you can't do serious programming on a glossy screen. Programming is about being able to focus on the task. I can't focus if the whole outside world is busy running around as a reflection on my screen... I can't focus if I have a huge glare on my screen that makes the code unreadable.
That's the same reason why many photographers keep using a mechanical device (the mirror box of the DSLR) rather than a LCD or LiveView : you can't focus on your task if what you see is a composite image of your subject and the reflections from half the world behind the camera.

As for the external monitor, if your notebook is stuck behind an external monitor all the time, you don't need a notebook... You don't need to tradeoff power for compacity and weight, just buy the full deal and get a Mac Pro. It's not much more expensive than the best MBP, and it's beyond comparison as far as raw power goes...

Blimey. The moaning has already reached fever pitch on here. Imagine what it will be like with solid facts?

Wait until tonight. I don't think this report has it nailed.
I think the report nails what it reveals, but I think it's missing "one more thing" this time.

I think I will be happy with my 2.5 ghz mbp.
I dont see any reason to buy a new one right now.
I dont like the looks of the new pro at all.

I feel the new 24" LED Apple Cinema Display will be a dock/screen. Otherwise why not introduce (rumors) other sizes too?

Yeah - like that'll ever happen. I don't want my stuff costing twice as much just because it's made in the USA.

I much prefer stuff made in China - especially from really wealthy companies who can afford the seriously high-tech manufacturing plants that make our machines.

God help us if Apple ever decided to make a laptop in the USA knowing how well the Americans make most of their cars....

Uh.

Apple doesn't make their own batteries. AFAIK, none of the major computer companies (Dell, et al.) do. They get their parts from the major OEM suppliers, most of whom have factories in China.

I don't see how this is a problem or a major disappointment.

I think after all of Apple's success lately, people are expecting the moon and then some. Get real people. Apple can't offer a 100% made-in-the-US product.

I hope the glass is frosted and has some texture that makes it easy to slide across the surface, especially with this click mechanism. A click and drag operation could be hard to accomplish on a glossy glass surface.

It will be like the iPhone i suspect

If this info proves to be correct then i'll be very disappointed. I had hoped to buy a MBP at a lowered price point but this report kills my enthusiasm.

$999 2.1 GHz
vs.
$1299 2.0 Ghz?

I guess the other extras are cool, but this seems kind of lame.

Interesting isn't it.

Okay so obviously quicktime and DVDs will be more efficient on the new dual-GPU MacBook, and in 9 months time Snow Leopard will give it a significant leap forward - video encoding, iTunes importing, iMovie usage, photo resizing, mathematical functions etc will all be much faster.

Anything else implied by this odd combination?

Hope gloss-only information is false!!

I really dont like the glossy screens.. Where is Apples touch with the market? Are they at all connected to reality?

I think so too, and I think it's the reason why they're ditching the 17" model and going with 15.4" only.

Hopefully they will be offering the 15" in a 1680x1050 version, which many PC manufacturers have been doing for ages (Dell even has a 1920x1200 15", which is a tad too much, but I'm typing on a 15" 1680x1050 right now and it's great).

I don't really care where the battery is manufactured. I was holding out a little hope for the rumor that Apple had invested in at-home manufacturing. I've always assumed that Apple batteries' "Assembled in China" printing was as good as saying that the whole machine was assembled there.

Most people love glossy screens. It doesn't really affect them and makes the machine look shiny and modern. Especially if it's never sunny and glare doesn't occur that much.

I have both glossy and matte machines. Can't say I have a preference.
