1299 for low end macbook

if Apple releases a 2.0GHz MacBook for $1299, my next laptop won't be a Mac. i hope they are wrong as i am a student and i need a new laptop and i love my old MacBook.

The battery in those new case pictures says "MacBook Rechargeable Battery" not "MacBook Pro Rechargeable Battery".

Thought it looked a tad small.

Those of you bitching about glossy screens - please raise your hand if you've ever actually *used one* in a production environment?
Me me me!

And I have no beef with glossy at all. I was suspicious at first, but really, it's fine. You stop noticing reflections after about 2 minutes. Unless you have a 200W spotlight aimed straight at the screen, it's fine.

Actually,... I can't focus if I have a huge glare on my screen that makes the code unreadable.
That's the same reason why many photographers keep using a mechanical device (the mirror box of the DSLR) rather than a LCD or LiveView : you can't focus on your task if what you see is a composite image of your subject and the reflections from half the world behind the camera.

Finally a well thought out and truthful answer. I am a professional photographer, and never had a problem using the glossy screen on my MacBook for making corrections. If you are really in a "professional" environment, isn't it possible to put a portable computer in a more favorable position, or adjust the lighting to your needs.

Everyone is raving about the lack of matte screens, perhaps I'm just not professional "enough" to get it? Laptops are a trade off. I don't find the colors appreciably different on the glossy screen from the matted one, and it just never bothered me. Seems like the reaction is far bigger than the justification?

Most people love glossy screens. It doesn't really affect them and makes the machine look shiny and modern. Especially if it's never sunny and glare doesn't occur that much.

I have both glossy and matte machines. Can't say I have a preference.

the question is: do you use your notebook for personal purposes or do you have to work in front of it for 12 hours a day. THEN it makes a difference.

This is hilarious, LOL ! Are you really saying that glossy screens are better because you can move your head in a different direction to avoid the reflection ! That's funny ! I'd like a screen that looks all right regardless !

The closest thing to that is matte - period.

*crickets*

Yeah, thought so. Matte Screens have turned into this year's way to show that you're "in the know" - kinda like saying there's NO WAY you could work full time on a MacBook Air, and you NEED the power (******** - we're all video editors now?) of a Pro if you want to do "real" work.

"Yeah, I'm a pro. I went Matte. I'm ****ing hardcore, me"

If you've ever used a matte screen in an environment where glare is a problem, you know that gloss actually IMPROVES matters - you get a specular reflection which you can move out of the way (esp on a notebook), as opposed to a diffuse reflection which just blows out the whole screen. This is incredibly evident outside - could NEVER use my old PowerBook outdoors, do so with my MacBook all the time.

Quit whining. Stop listening to what other ill-informed people are telling you to think and produce on a glossy screen for a while. You'll see it makes zero difference for 99% of the time, and for that 1% where you get glare, try a matte in the same place - you're going to prefer how the glossy handles it.

Unless you're Stevie Wonder.

Quite clearly that's what many people in this thread are saying they're going to do.

Their point is they would like the choice.

What's yours?

Ever since SJ took control of Apple, the company has never been about choice (perhaps with the exceptions of Boot Camp and the Mac Pro.)

It's Apple's way or the highway, everything from wireless network to non-expandable iMacs to iTunes Store DRM to OSX86. And it doesn't look likely to change with regards to matte/glossy screens.

Sad, really.

if Apple releases a 2.0GHz MacBook for $1299, my next laptop won't be a Mac. i hope they are wrong as i am a student and i need a new laptop and i love my old MacBook.

Need or want? If you have a Macbook, why on earth do you need a new one? Not to sound like a cranky old gramps, but I made it through 4 years of undergrad with an iBook 600Mhz - and I graduated this past May!

Seriously - if that's true, they can count me out. They lost me on the iMac already. Don't get me wrong: I don't mind glossy screens for watching movies but most definitely not on a pro notebook sold at such a high price.

You don't need a glossy screen for watching TV. My HD TV is matte, and the contrast and blacks are fine. Glossy screen is just use for one single thing : it lets manufacturer put up with an inferior LCD while masquerading its weaknesses. Cheap TN lack in contrast and black purity, and the glossy layout just hides that by artificially enhancing contast. On the other hand, quality HD TV use high quality LCD (often IPS) and do not need the glossy layout. When I watch TV at home, I want to watch what is going on on the TV, not the people sitting in front of it...

In Switzerland, workplace safety regulations even rule out the use of glossy screens at work.kis

Well, at least the Swiss did get some things right...

now we watch people frantically neg this for glossy only screens... :D

No, Ill tell you what they will neg it for - and what I would if the voting system worked on my mac...which it never does. :)

They will neg it for no 17 inch.
Why is this an issue? People must recall all the articles, including Apples recent admission to BAD NVIDIA cards in the CURRENT laptops.

Meaning, if you want a 17 inch, your stuck. You buy it and got to ship it back.
But wait, it mentioned this extended warranty was more than likely US only.

Add to it the fact Im in Hungary, I believe it.

So Yes, I would neg, not the story...good work Arn...but I would neg Apple if this is true.

And keeping a low end macbook without updating it...come on apple, getting sloppy.

Also, those that want matte should have an option...glare can be a problem and depending on your work place, you may not have control. And why should someone buy a glare matte when the computer should already come glare free...it cost enough doesnt it.

Ill add one more thing. Im on a Powerbook G4 667.
I like all my ports in the back. In my current set up it will be really awkward having them shooting out of the left side, or any side for that matter.
I realize people hate reaching in back. But when you take out your laptop, set it up and open the case...cant be to hard. Anyway.

Other than that...look exciting, but a glass track pad, I question that as well...another breakable item. (looking at broken aluminum hinge on this titanium macbook I have)...

Also, you click the trackpad, that will be a pain..."I want to push, doh...it clicked. I want to click...doh it pushed." Or..."I have to push and then click...two finger acrobatic combos...thanks for the finger health workout stevo!" lol

Sorry, a rant from a powerbook user who has been waiting for a decent upgrade..and no, broken Nvidia cards dont cut it...so that was a year wait there. :)

Peace

dAlen

*crickets*

*raises hand* (ps. raising a hand is silent hehe..)
Me for one have used both, and I PREFER the anti-glare coating over no coating (glossy).
I find it annoying to watch reflections of stuff, whatever they might be, on my workspace.

If you've ever used a matte screen in an environment where glare is a problem, you know that gloss actually IMPROVES matters - you get a specular reflection which you can move out of the way (esp on a notebook), as opposed to a diffuse reflection which just blows out the whole screen. I dont agree. A lot of people doesnt agree, therefore anti-glare should be offered as an option. If there is demand, there shall be supply!

Ever since SJ took control of Apple, the company has never been about choice (perhaps with the exceptions of Boot Camp and the Mac Pro.)
More importantly, ever since SJ took control of Apple, it's been all about form over function, and the glossy screen issue is a clear cut case of that.

231653-2008-10-13mbpleak-4.jpg

As you can see in this triple-confirmed picture, the camera is now behind the glass, which makes it impossible for them to have a matte screen, or the cam image would be nothing but a grey blur.

Is that a valid reason for going glossy-only? No, if function dictated the design, they would keep the camera outside the glass like they did before, but they felt it was more important to go with this design. Just like they think it's more important to have a thin iPhone with a flush surface on the back, than to have a user-replaceable battery.

Me me me!

And I have no beef with glossy at all. I was suspicious at first, but really, it's fine. You stop noticing reflections after about 2 minutes.

you might - but your brain and your eyes don't. It's much more stressful on the eyes to constantly look at a glossy surface - you subconsciously have to refocus all the time. It's a proven fact that glossy screens are much more tiring on the eyes than matte ones. There's a reason why there are SUVA (in Switzerland and EU regulations against glossy screens in work-places.

the question is: do you use your notebook for personal purposes or do you have to work in front of it for 12 hours a day. THEN it makes a difference.

I am a computing professional. I sit in front of computers (both my MB/gloss and MBP/matte) more than 12 hours a day.

I sell these for a living, no pro I talk to wants a glossy display.

So you very obviously don't have a clue what your talking about.

Can you people just calm down like 2 seconds o maybe 8 hours before you start hating apple, this is just rumors... I doubt that apple would shoot themselves in the foot like some of these rumors are saying they are. Just wait until the real presentation then you can start with all your hating =p I will plase an order tonight, i need a new computer!

Glossy only would be the stupidest thing Apple has done since overpricing the Cube. Glossy only on the MB and iMac is already stupid, but at least a logical argument could be made for that decision because it seemed like they were reserving the matte finish for their high end machines to give them more perceived value. But to completely eliminate matte as an option altogether? That's just moronic! For many people, glossy screen is a deal breaker.

Apple doesn't have a monopoly on the OS X market anymore, people can now install OS X onto many different non-Apple computers. Even though my friend has been a loyal Apple user forever, he was about to buy a non-Apple laptop because a netbook form factor is perfect for his needs. I convinced him to wait till today to see if Apple came out with anything to serve this huge new market. Now not only do I not hear anything about an Apple netbook, but I also find they're completely eliminating the glossy screen! If true, my next laptop will be a non-Apple OSX86 machine that I install OS X onto.

EDIT:
p.s. I am NOT a professional graphic artist of any flavor, I'm just a regular user who cannot stand glossy. And there are TONS of people out there who feel the same as me on this.
