Diving into crazy-unlikely territory here, but what if that mysteriously small square connector next to the usb ports is a proprietary connector for...

...a docking brick, with additional connectivity for video, data, etc.

You'd retain basic connectivity in the laptop itself for peripherals, and then have massive and convenient connectivity for the rest of your needs.

I think its tough to imagine pushing that much data (video/data/audio) through such a small port/with such a limited number of pins. If you look at dock connectors from the PC market, they tend to be quite a bit larger, even the rather tiny HP Dock Connector 3 type port.

like any normal person except for us would know what this is...

Anybody with a Wii, without a WiFi network also knows what a USB--->RJ45 (Ethernet) dongle is :p

am i the only one that would prefer a macbook that is about 1.5 inches thick so it is cool enough to use?

why yes, yes you are the only one... why the hell would you EVER want it that thick. i mean its not like apple would ever do that, but why????

What if this case is NOT for the revised macbook, but the macbook air? The top case is nearly identical, but side ports have been added, sans firewire (god I read too much engadget).

I highly doubt this. If Apple did this, it would make the MacBook Air's profile look awfully similar to the Voodoo Envy 133's profile (thin, straight and squarish). Apple's not known to copy their competition's design cues. That would be a "step back" for the Air, even if many see additional ports as a step forward.

I've been asserting this since yestrday, in a variety of contexts, but no-one's listening... It would work if they employed ELVEN MAGIC.

Repeat after me...

ELVEN MAGIC.

;)

These are starting to look really good, I think the speakers may be under the keyboard? But then there aren't any holes in the keyboard to confirm that the speaker will be under the keyboard. I hope the new macbooks will be that thin with a 15" screen option?

Yeah. MagSafe is definitely off the left. And those big ports are definitely USB. In the bottom picture you can see symbols that represents USB ports.
:D

We have an answer. Case closed. And thats a usb-800 and not a 400. Most likely backwards compatible.

The last time I saw a laptop that thick was my roomate's POS Dell Inspiron 500 (I think) in the college dorms...God, what a piece that thing was, makes me angry just thinking about it

Is the air milled from solid aluminum?

I own a macbook air and have always been impressed by its rigidity. Check out these images of the inner workings of the air. I honestly dont know much about how metals are worked but it looks to me as if the inside top assembly of the air is milled out of a solid piece of aluminum...(note the screw hole assemblies)

Could this be the same technology that has been rumored as revolutionary for the new macbooks / "ibricks"? Either way looks like a great to me...have had the air for 4 months and the designs and construction impress me till today.

Nah this doesn't work, the magsafe is the one shown on the end to the left...

What I'm saying is that the ports you see in this pic are all the ones on that side (there aren't any out of shot), look at the 3rd pic of the optical drive, you can see them all lined up at the other end...

I've never seen a fw800 connector 'in the flesh'. What are the dimensions like compared to a standard fw400 connector?

That last hole in the alleged MB casing is tripping me out - it seems to small to be anything...:eek:

I don't think the power port (magsafe) will be at the right in the port line-up. I can't think of a laptop I've ever used/seen where the AC adapter port/hole wasn't at one of the rear corners of the case, whether it be on the sides or the rear...from ANY manufacturer.

what i think they should do with the MBA

make the whole thing .5 inches thick, one thickness for the whole computer, remove video out, 2 USB ports, optical drive, silver keys. even at its thickest point(.74 inches) that's still pretty thin, and if they made the whole thing that thick, they could fit in optical drives. of voodoo can, apple can

i know, 1.5 inches thick is pretty 1999. i swear if some of the people who posted here had their way, apple would be making some hideous products. lets hope jbrenn never works in any design department for any company lol

Something else that might be interesting to note: the firewire 800 and ethernet ports are almost identical in size, so no way of knowing there.

I just can't believe apple would do away with firewire. There's no adapter to connect any firewire devices. There's an easy way for ethernet (USB/ethernet adapter). And then it's just another extra thing apple can sell.

it was also a 'Look, iLife '08 and its new features event' and 'Look, iWork '08 with new spreadsheet software Numbers event'.
True....

Hmmm, I just thought of something. What are the chances they update all of their Macs in an event? They did it with the iPods in the Let's Rock event, I don't see why they couldn't do a Let's Compute event where they update all of their Macs. :D

Probably posted here a few times already.

for those who have followed apple rumors and product launches in the past, how long after was an official announcement made once leaked pictures hit the net?
