I've never understood how Samsung can sell a ridiculously large number of devices in any range of spec, but Apple can't seem to bump the hardware on a comparatively puny number of devices.

If these claims are true (and I take what the news says with a grain of salt), then maybe I should just pick up a mini now. I was hoping that we would see a retina mini later this year.

So bring crap on the market just to keep the market flowing?

Have you looked outside lately?

exactly...we're living on a dumpster planet already. Should we build more junk just to make more profits?

If the iPad Mini gen 2 I described is "crap", then what is the iPad Mini gen 1 that they're already producing and selling? If they don't release an iPad Mini gen 2, they'll continue producing and selling the iPad Mini gen 1, which is probably worse for the environment (it takes up more space, weights more, and requires more fuel for shipping.)

So your environmental argument (seems like a bizarre argument to be making in the first place...) doesn't work.

For me they can wait until 2020. I don't care. iPad Mini doesn't appeal to me. Why would I want something in between an iPhone and a regular iPad :)

Surprised we are seeing so many iPad Mini discounts/specials going on right now if the next one is either a spec bump or several months out before release. I don't recall the first or second generation of the iPad seeing retailer discounts until the next was announced.

I am mostly ok with the non-retina Mini's screen that I have EXCEPT for one superficial thing: can anyone explain why the screen is darker on the white version than the black? We have one of each and trust me it is, when you hold it side by side. I want the screen when off to be about as black as the bezel, and annoyingly it reminds of the 3GS LCD when off. Why is this?
Are you sure the brightness settings the same?

No I'm talking about the display off. I'm just curious why they appear not to be the same. Perhaps if I take a picture of the white and black side by side. If you have an iPhone5 and see how the screen is true black, that is what the white Mini screen seems to be.

It's an optical 'trick', the amount of white around the display 'tricks' your brain to think it's different. On the iPhone, the 'black ' and 'white' area are negligible and the screen itself is smaller so you can't see it.

bc apple has no need to. people buy the crap out of their devices. if apple started to do what samsung does...we would see so many people here complain about losing value on their devices.

Just wait until you hold an iPad 5 in your hands, maybe you'll want that instead...

For my part I'm interested in an iPad mini (retina) because of its light weight, not its size.

I also think that the mini/iPod touch style casing is much more comfortable to hold than the sharp edged iPad 2-4 casing.

Of course there's also the price. If Apple releases both a light iPad 5 and a retina iPad mini this fall, I will hesitate between the two because of the price, and may end up getting a mini.

But if they only release the iPad 5 and no retina mini, I'll bite the bullet and buy the 5 because I'm due for an upgrade and the bigger screen is also a nice thing.

Apple is not afraid of canibalization of sales in general, but that doesn't mean they have to shoot themselves in the foot.

Portability, for one. And, it's not a big iPhone. It's just a smaller iPad. There's a difference.

So why would I buy a non-retina mini in late 2013 if reports indicate that a retina version shows up in early 2014?

This is for the angstridden people who always want the latest and can't wait.

1)You need it, buy now and don't worry . It's a good product
2)You can wait: WAIT!

Everyday I use my mini I wish it had retina. So waiting on that.

As I've been using an iPad over the past few years I've come to the conclusion it's too heavy. Depending on the weight of the new one I may upgrade to that or get a retina iPad Mini. I hope it gets release this year.
