If Apple releases a 3G-enabled iPod Touch, what reason would anyone have going forward to buy an iPhone, especially if the Touch also gets front and rear cameras? You could simply use WiFi or 3G to make phone calls via Skype or Vonage, and only pay about $30 a month for the privilege of doing so.

Because most people won't do that. You need to remember that the majority of people who use these devices aren't nerds.

how so?

The iPhone will be there for those who want... well... a phone.

The touch will be there for those who don't want/need a phone but still want data outside of wifi and trust me, the mobile internet is the way we are going towards.

Exactly. A 3G enabled device - one where the 3G is possibly built into the cost of the device so you don't need a plan is better - is a great thing and it would make the iPod touch an even better device.

Don't forget the lack of the phone app.

Wouldn't such a move seriously eat into Apple's profits? The iPhone is their top money maker, and you're going to see a lot less of them sold if you can get cheap monthly rates for a 3G iPod touch.

Why would you assume that the iPhone has a greater profit margin than the iPod touch? They don't make any money on the contract. That's AT&T. So if Apple puts out another 3G capable device, they sell more devices. I don't think they care which device you buy. And I wouldn't doubt it if they don't care what carrier you use. What if they came out with an iPod touch that could work with Verizon? Apple has an exclusive contract for the phone, but what about the iPod touch?

No one is talking about iLife 11? I could see getting rid of iDVD. Maybe include is as an optional download like they did with the old iMovie (no, there won't be a new iDVD, just the old one as an optional download). A revamped iWeb is a must. I hope they include some prosumer features for at least editing html titles, tags, body, etc. Like RapidWeaver. No, I don't expect it to be as great as RapidWeaver or even offer close to all of the feature currently available in RW, but take some hints from that great piece of software. There will probably be a new app. It will probably be an app offering an easy and quick way for consumers to create iPhone/iPad Apps. Of course it will be extremely basic and lacking many pro features, but it would further development and customization for users and their "i" devices. I assume all of the iLife 11 apps will be completely rewritten for 64-bit Snow Leopard. Why isn't Final Cut Studio? Please release an update for that soon to utilize 64-bit. Anyway, it will be interesting to see the event. There has to be more than just an iPod refresh.

This is when you get people who are uneducated when it comes to Cell phone manufacturers and voice/data plans.

I read somewhere that it will cost you close to $2,000 over the course of two years with the iPhone.

I agree with this, The phone market imo is more volatile than the mobile media market. I do not have numbers to cite this, but I would think there are more Ipod nanos/touches in the wild than Iphones. This is the target AAPL might be thinking about. 3g with no contracts. Just as another poster mentioned, Skype and other services are very popular.

Just my two cents

I kinda want that 64 bit version of iTunes a few people were talking about.

I don't think the 3G touch will happen, but it would sure be interesting and something I might be interested in, if it was like $5 a month because that is about all I will be able to afford after buying this thing.

Apple could probably make a killing off a $5 or $10 3G plan of some sort because a lot of kids that have the iPod touch would kill for this and at 5-10 a month it would be affordable for kids.

After all this I would still be happy with wifi only and a rear camera. Its the rear camera that will make me happy.

Because it says in the article?

if iLife 2001 goes get announced or even released I copuld see a 64bit cocoa apps. Perhaps iLife for the iPad/iPod touch/iPhone?

Eirther way I predict iLife 2011 will be digital only. Meaning you must go on line and buy the software and you will be taken to a page where you can download the software. No discs. The software could even come though iTunes. Need to redownload it? Just log in with your apple ID.

1. there is no way apple will sell a 3g ipod touch, making the only major difference between the iphone and ipod touch the phone app.

2. if this mythical 3g ipod touch was created. someone would create a seamless phone app for the ipod touch. and also it was cause even more strain on at&t's network

No 3G for the iPod touch that is retarted if they do that I will buy one get the 3G and then hit it with a hammer

I can tell. Your display pic says it all. Hope you have fun wasting money.

Same here. Rumors say iTunes store being moved to the web, so we may see itunes being striped down (meaning less bloat, faster performance!) and the itunes link will take you to the itunes website.

The nano is aimed more at kids and the touch for those who want their data. I hope they have 3G as my blackberry i have is alright, but a pain to get online with (4Gb of flash storage and 96MB of ram) I know I would be using the touch a lot out and about.

Plus next year facetime may be out for 3G, and if it does that could mean the 3G touch will be supporting facetime (assuming if it happens, there will be a software update)

I hope the new mini nano takes over from the shuffle and they keep a similar design for the regular nano but make it bigger, surely it could take over from the iPod and they could retire that puppy.

So that's mini nano, mega nano and touch - makes sense no.

  1. I think that's pretty obvious. but we already explained the reasons. Go back and read them.
  2. Thats why Apple creates TOU for the app store. Also, correct me if I'm wrong but ifn't there another chip in the phone that a 3G data device wouldnt have? As for strain. Look at the iPad.

No, I'm not going to because I'm an "advanced" user like most people on here. I'm very familiar with using SIP phones and have one that I use on my iPad already.

I'm saying that the majority of folks who buy the new iPod Touch won't. They won't want to fuss with plugging in headphones to make a phone call or having to remember to turn on Skype/Voip app to run in the background.

I use my 1st gen iPod Touch as a phone. Just plug in the mic/speaker and use Skype. Yea it's not the greatest set up but I don't mind.

Would love to see iLife '11 and iLife Mobile. Maybe iMovie for iOS was just the start, imagine being able to record music on your iPhone with Garageband Mobile. Maybe Apple will release an accessory attachment that allows multitrack recording in the app.

I really hope they dont discontinue the shuffle.

i would rather have a shuffle over any other ipod, with the exception of the ipod touch.

i would even choose the current shuffle, over the 3x3 cm touch nano
