Money says less than 10% of people would use this more than 3 times (basically after the novelty wore off)

My money is given 6 months, a ton of programs will come out for it, even games that use it. I wish I had that kind of imagination type mind, but I am sure there will be a lot of people who program that are thinking now it can be used.

Once it comes out we will really get to see what its possible and how far people will take it or not.

I hope that one day they make video chat work across multiple applications.

Thats holding video chat back to the most. For instance, why can't the Evo 4G talk cross chat to iChat users and vice versa?

I think some underestimate what this brings to the table. I travel quite a bit and would love see my kids before bed time. They are 6, 2, and 1. I personally have been on the apple band wagon for years, but I think this really will allow apple to attack another demographic. I can see the commercials now with grandma and grandpa talking to the grand kids via iChat. They may not have computers or ipads but probably have cell phones. I think it will be bigger than we think. I wish I could have held out for the next iPad that will probably have iChat. Oh well.

Same here, but also I can see how a company would like this. Nothing says we have an eye on you if your VP is calling you on video conference and your not where your suppose to be, or your with a client and you hand over the phone and its a top executive talking there with you and the client.

The ipad is where it would also be welcomed, even more but that will be rev. 2 haha.

3Gs vs 4G

Hey but I have a 3Gs bought the same day when it was released! This means one year ago and I have 2 years contract as everybody as, I think! To get the 4g we have to buy "another" iPhone or we can exchange between them? Or at least buy it for a special discounted price! Is it a dream?:apple:

the novelty for voice control wore off.

I think iChat will be different though.

I use voice control on a daily basis, while I'm running or driving (need that handsfree so no ticket!)

As for video chat, I probably won't use it as much as voice control. But who knows! I'm fairly positive that it will only run on wifi though. AT&T can't handle much more traffic.

I'm actually excited for video chat on the iPhone. I know alot more people with iPhones than I do with Macs, and most people I know with PCs don't have webcams, so no video chat. Once people get accustomed to it on the iPhone hopefully it'll get more people using it on the desktop too.

I've used iChat's video capabilities only a handful of times (for the aforementioned reasons) but everytime I've been impressed. And what sci-fi geek DOESN'T want to be able to video chat on their phone? :D

If the iPhone HD goes to multiple carriers, it should take some of the strain off of AT&T's pathetic network.

I would like to see a Cisco Telepresence app. That would be great.

I use my macbook to videochat with my family once a week or so. My sister and I are in college in different states, and my parents live in yet another state so we don't get to see each other much. We each have a Mac and use the iChat feature regularly, so this may make it even easier for me as I could chat with them anywhere and not just in my dorm. :D

I'm so stoked on video chat that I'm going to buy 2 so I can chat by myself. Maybe one in each color for accessorizing.

i want it. tho not for ichat. for a mirror or an app where you need a photo of your self. also people who like to blog while driving can see better!

anyhow the camera will be used a lot depending on your needs.

I would dump Android if I could Skype this way.
Just get a Nokia E71. I've been video chatting via Skype (fring) over 3G for a long time now on ATT. It's cool...but Apple will get credit for inventing video calls. You watch.

Video calls over cellular networks have existed in Europe for years.

Oh well. The AAPL machine at work, taking credit for existing technology!

It'll be interesting to see how they implement it. I can't imagine having to hold a phone up in the air for video conferencing. I rarely even call people anymore so upping it to video conferencing won't happen here. I wonder how many years it'll take before AT&T lets their users enable this feature.

Because apple is closed to their own devices, it allows developers to know that there is a lot of people who would have a front-facing camera and that lets them know that there is money in making applications for them, making a lot of possibilities that you could not foresee with an Android device do to the amount of devices and most of them don't have a front-facing camera.

I went from not understanding why people want video conferencing to actually using video conferencing once I had kids.

I suspect it's the same for many others.

arn

Yup. I agree. My wife and I do not have any children yet
but I must say that I started to use the iChat on my MacBook because of my Godson who will turn four in August.
Prior to this I never used video conferencing.

I use video chat sometimes and it would be much easier to do it on the iPhone. First of all, sometimes people are not accessible on the computer or online, so having it on the phone it will be more spontaneous to use it. Also, it is easier to bring it with you around the apartment..

I hope they will have a few filters, like sepia, black&white because I like to use them when I am not very presentable :D

First thing that popped into my head- if someone gave one to their teenager, they could make the teen video chat to prove that they are where they say they are and with who they say they're with. Obviously, mobile me or whatever can show where your kids are on gps... but the video conferencing would be cheaper.
