Did anyone read the actress's twitter post from the Engadget article? I guess she doesn't have to worry about her "f****** Apple" audition anymore. She has zero chance of getting it now.

I went from not understanding why people want video conferencing to actually using video conferencing once I had kids.

I suspect it's the same for many others.

Can MacRumors users video conference with your family Arn?

I saw that and also thought how much a fool she sounds

I am waiting for the day you can video chat and will actually transform you into your favorite celebrity or personally designed avatar but will still show you talking.

This would be great for stalking, for example.

Video chat over 3G was amusing in 2003 (in UK) when I had it on a Sony Ericsson phone, but it didn't really catch on.

Can Apple revive any interest, seven years on?

Probably.

This will most likely be enabled over wifi only, so no.

yes possibilities are endless of it for being the wifi suited thing but u just never know what is in the kitty of future............yet it is exciting to see whether it will be a wifi mode or other way around.............:)

The real problem with video chat on any cellphone is you have to hold the phone steady directly in front of your face. Only using video chat when you are sat down and can put the phone in a dock really limits its use. We are going to see lots of shaky images and probably a lot of views up people's nostrils when they don't hold the phone up high enough. Think Blair Witch Project.

I am also waiting for the first lawsuit filed after someone is using video chat whilst walking down the street focusing just on the phone held in front of them and accidentally steps into traffic or falls down an open manhole or similar. In addition, you just know there is some idiot out there who is going to use this whilst driving.

I personally couldn't give a crap about video conferencing. A front-facing camera seems pointless to me (unless you're trying to take a self-portrait for Facebook).

i am waiting for it too for quiet sometime now................will this be happen though is still a question...............

it will be good if the skype app can enable the video chat too... in the near future :D

Yes, I think if Apple enables video chat on the iphone, then it's safe to assume that they intend for it to immediately replace voice-calling, and expect you to ABSOLUTELY USE IT FOR EVERY SINGLE CALL YOU EVER MAKE FOREVER. Which makes a lot of sense, considering every other existing phone and service in the country is also video chat capable, and everywhere you walk and talk and drive, you're always connected to a wi-fi network, and you will always have a need to add a visual to your conversation. Unfortunately, the concepts real drawback is, it's absolutely necessary to have a perfectly still, well-lit scene, with proper makeup and camera angles, and where, pray, am I going to find time for rehearsals for my performance...

All-or-nothing thinking is for stupid. Don't be dumb.

You might be joking, but this already exists and is used by movie special FX and video game studios. There are limitations: you need a high end computer (an iPhone doesn't have the power) and you have to put motion capture tracking dots on your face. It doesn't replace proper multicamera facial capture set ups but it is something that is quick and easy that an artist can use whilst sitting at their desk. As far as I'm aware no-one has hooked it up to a videochat application, but that wouldn't be particularly hard to do.

I've had video chat on my Macs for about 6 years.
Please don't bring video chat to the iPad. Boy it would be a pain to hold that thing up and focused on my face during the course of a 45 minute call.

So the rest of us shouldn't have the option, because you personally never used it much on your workstation? ...& are too cheap to buy a simple stand for your iPad?

Maybe it IS a good thing Apple doesn't listen to its customers.

Certainly, because some people have nothing more to communicate than how they're feeling, or the shoes they tried on at the mall, it's safe to assume that no one else in any field ever has a need for visual communication during their conversations.

not a very bad idea , but i wonder how will the carriers charge for this, will it be the classic /minute charge or will apple chose to make it a internet using app and so waste traffic.

Other then that it has already been say`d, apple has a way of making us want and use stuff that we where not considering just short time ago so i guess this will be a success to as the rest of the apple products.

IMO, so many shunned by society over the past two generations migrated to a social life on the Internet since their looks, lifestyle or political views were shunned by their local community. Now the Internet is catching up with the rest of us that have social lives.

Back then, it was only text and the occasional picture to communicate. With sites like Chatroulette and Omegle Video conferencing, we are seeing a divide of the socially acceptable and non-socially acceptable using this quick video connection technology. The video conferencing on the iPhone will just make this divide bigger.

Notice the types of people you see in Apple ads, they are energetic, fun, happy and social. Dweebs hide behind their non-video computers. Have fun you legacy pre-common video Internet types, you need another rock to hide under!

I don't know if you're trying to sound sarcastic or you actually are a douchebag.

It's all about the money

Video Chat has some neat possibilities but the reason it has never taken off with mobiles in the past, other than the poor quality of the image, is the cost.

If you need to talk to someone and you have a plan that includes 700 mins of voice calls that you pay for every month regardless of your useage, then it's hard to see the value in paying 40p a minute for video chat. Add to this the fact that most phones are not compatible and you've got a really hard sell.

If Apple is including this feature we can only assume they've come up with a compelling package that will change the economics of the situation. Perhaps agreeing with the networks to allow video calls as part of your normal plan?

I only use it with my wife and daughter, but it really is great when you are in a different country for a longer period working. To be able to see them "live" at no cost in my hotel is great

Given the high costs and low monthly caps of Canadian carriers, I don't care about the iPhone or any other cellphone for that matter.

Tell me when Apple stops treating the iPod touch as a second-class citizen, always one or two generations late on iPhone features.

When the iPod touch is more of a profit source then the iPhone. Simple.
