I went from not understanding why people want video conferencing to actually using video conferencing once I had kids.

I suspect it's the same for many others.

arn

I plan to use it for the same, V chat with the fam while im at work

This is exactly what I was thinking. I voted "not at all" in the poll because it's the truth -- I'm not interested -- but Apple has a way of making people suddenly interested in things they weren't before. Nobody was really interested in a consumer tablet computer before the iPad. Most of us weren't interested in smart phones until the iPhone. People weren't that interested in buying digital music online until iTunes, etc.

Who knows, maybe this will renew people's interest...

Well said. I remember having a Sony Ericson phone when the 1st gen iPhone came out. Was very content with my phone at the time, but then my brother offered to buy me the iPhone and it has been addiction since then... Apple is good @ what they do.

Seems like a cool feature, but considering I have never video chatted in my life, and I doubt any of my friends will have an iPhone 4G/HD, it seems rather useless.

Most of my friends don't even talk on the phone much. It's all about texting these days.

The deaf will rejoice! Signing on the phone, awesome.

For me, it's not a must-have feature, but it'll definitely be cool.

I've had video chat on my Macs for about 6 years. I had one of the first Icamera things that Apple made and you stuck it to your computer. It was silver and worked pretty well. The Macbook and iMac that I've gotten since then have had built in cameras. Still I think I've video chatted with two people in that time. Yes, on more than one occasion and yes at times it has been fun. But we are talking about maybe 30 voice/video chats in over 6 years. Maybe this feature will take off once everyone has it. But really since video chat has been around for over a decade (I did a video chat for work about 10 year ago and haven't done one for a real deal since, only for admin internal stuff) and it just doesn't seem to take off, I think we can start to say that most of us don't want to talk to the little man in the moving picture box. We want to talk and multitask in the moments in between which we can do much much easier if we aren't also on video.
Please don't bring video chat to the iPad. Boy it would be a pain to hold that thing up and focused on my face during the course of a 45 minute call.

Does anybody think ATT will try to charge extra for this or just treat it as normal data?

Oh yeah, just bring on chatroullette lol.

First thing that popped into my head- if someone gave one to their teenager, they could make the teen video chat to prove that they are where they say they are and with who they say they're with. Obviously, mobile me or whatever can show where your kids are on gps... but the video conferencing would be cheaper.

On the flipside, it brings a whole new level to sexting. Parents, hold on to your kids!

You know, that's an interesting thoght. I wonder if Apple's seeming ability to make things easy and cool will cause people to re-engage in their conversations. We might start speaking in entire sentences instead of tweets!

Didn't really use video calling apart from trying it out deliberately, even though everyone had two cameras on their phones by 2007. (Until people switched to iPhone...)
Really? None of my friends had phones with two cameras; I didn't either. Then again, none of us were interested in smartphones or other high end phones either.
Since I'm going to be the only person amongst my friends who will get the new iPhone, I don't forsee myself using the video feature a lot. Also, video makes it really difficult to multitask. If I can turn it off, I probably will.

I dunno, maybe it's just me, but does this just scream PORN?

We use video conferencing 1x month with our remote facility, but I have no desire to video call my wife or kids, much as I love them. Gotta sell me on this.

Will Video Chat Be A Flop?

This is an interesting one and I'm excited to see how it turns out.

When 3G launched in the UK many years ago handset makers all threw front facing cameras and video chat capabilities into their phones - advertising it as the next big thing.

I don't think I ever made one video call or know anyone that used the feature for more than a one off.

Obviously Apple will but their design/marketing genius/name to it and it will be more successfull but I just wonder how much more sucessful - the beauty of voice chat is that people cant see you - what if I'm hung over or ill (or on the toilet!!), would I want people seeing what I look like - or am I going to have to check a mirror before I answer that video call from "unknown number" incase its someone important?!

Fees

When video chat comes to ATT's network, you can be sure you will be paying extra for it. They're not going to let this one get away.

My wife and I have Iphones and are on a family plan.

Because of the work I do touring in Theatre, I am away from home for months at a time. We iChat once a week and talk daily, but having a video chat feature on the phone would be ideal. I'd love to be able to see and talk to her more often. So for my work/lifestyle this could be a big deal.

Yeah, and similarly for anyone in a long distance relationship. Pretty much everyone I know in that situation (including myself) uses Skype for video chat on a regular basis, so I suspect there's significant demand. At least, if it works well -- ideally it would be able to work with Skype, since iChat offers much lower quality video in my experience, and not everyone will have an iPhone at both ends.

It's important because it's on the iPhone. If it were on the Droid it wouldn't matter. Funny how that works. Personally I don't give a damn about that feature, but I would really love a built in turn by turn free GPS. Now that's useful. Flash support would be great too.

You should get that Droid then...

Video chat will only be available through Wi-Fi. If AT&T can't handle our phone calls, how will they be able to handle our voice chats?

I suspect you are incorrect (in more ways than one ;))

Just get a Nokia E71. I've been video chatting via Skype (fring) over 3G for a long time now on ATT. It's cool...but Apple will get credit for inventing video calls. You watch.

Video calls over cellular networks have existed in Europe for years.

Oh well. The AAPL machine at work, taking credit for existing technology!

Where did Apple take credit for video chat? Video calls over cellular everywhere for years. AAPL will more than likely deliver it in such a way that people will actual use it. They will deserve credit for that, and you will probably find some reason to still hate them.

Video chat is kinda like GPS when it first came out to me. It seems unnecessary and just "cool" at first, but once you get it, you wonder how you did without.

Its useless. I've had it with couple of phones and never really used it. GPS gets you to places but video chat is just pointless waste of money. A lot of times I walk and talk. Try doing that while video chatting. Soon you notice that people might be in awkward places, walking, driving etc. and not really ready for video call.

I voted not at all..... I really have no need for it but I know a lot of people were crying for it so now they can stop whining..... of course I'm sure they will find something about it they don't like so the whining will continue full force.

I guess the wife and I can do a little "video chatting" while I'm at work ;)

I just thought this up... If then new iPhones gonna have a front facing camera, then it should theoretically have the little green LED light to show that the camera is on which I hope will be tied into a notification light of sorts for text, missed calls ect.
