My Macbook's gone missing

Hi There,

I ordered a Macbook on the 18th October through mac universe with a hard disk upgrade to 80gb and ram to 1gb. I have called daily ever since and have been constanty told that there is a component shortage and is in constraint.... :( Umm...I've been given the option to cancel but i daren't because i've got a sneaky feeling they might be sneeking a 2 core baddy in it... anyone having a similar experience out there?:D

I have a question.... what time does Apple release things, like Cupertino time??? I believe I heard it was nine, and if it is, then we still got another two hours of waiting

Exactly what I was saying. Apple is based in Cupertino, California. It's not even 8 am here yet. Usually stuff happens between 9am-12pm

Maybe they won't be 100% compliant, but unless something earth shattering happens before 802.11n is finalized, I'd expect that many draft-n products could be made compatible with equipment using the the final standard, with little more than a firmware change.

And wasn't 802.11g still in the draft stage when it was introduced in the AirPort Extreme? (Extreme was introduced on January 7, 2003, but 802.11g was not ratified until June 2003.)

That is something I've been wondering - what is the approval process like for these standards? Specifically, why does this take so long for approval?

I think its great that Apple is putting the pre-N capable hardware in to the iMac's, MP and MBP already just awaiting a pre-N capable base station to make it fly. Oooh - maybe they will intro this in November to have a sale on one for Black Friday? Steve, how about it?

Certainly the pre-n stuff will be turned on in January for the iTV intro. Here's a thought - so will there be MB and MM update prior to iTV so that the entire line will have pre-n hardware and be capable of communicating to the iTV at full tilt speeds? I'm guessing so!

The reality is if you really need a Optical drive, that need can be easily taken care of with a USB device. When needed, it isn't something to carry around with your self constantly.
Is the bandwith of Bluetooth less than a CD or DVD reader?

It would be cool to have a bluetooth CD/DVD reader. If that worked it be so tight. No wires. And you could stack them and create a laptop with 5 optical drives. :p

When they announced the changes to the MBP C2D, it was done by now.. if you go back to the posting on MacRumors, it was done at 8:38am EST (5:38AM Cupertino time).

Apple Releases Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro
Tuesday October 24, 2006 08:38 AM EST

Today's not lookin' good for this announcement....

I would love a laptop without an optical drive.

I hardly ever use mine on my 15'' PB, I'd love to be able to replace it with a battery or second hard drive or just leave the bay empty to reduce weight.

PC world sells USB floppy drives, USB CD and USB DVD drives for a few tenners each. I'd be perfectly happy to buy one and leave it in the drawer for when I need it.

PS - Bluetooth DVD drive? don't think so, big hunks of rotating media need either big expensive batteries or to be plugged into the mains electricity.

Would like to see someone try it on the market tho...

Oh well. I won't have the money to buy it until next week anyway.
But it would be nice to have some specs to drool over until then ;)

No Apple

The MacBook doesn't need a Core 2 Duo processor. Apple needs to leave a gap between the MacBook and the MacBook Pro.

There's still quite a big difference between the MB and the MBP even if they both have C2D processors.
CPU speed isn't the only thing to care about you know.

That is marketing for losers.

If there is a gap, and Apple doesn't fill it, someone else will. An artificial gap like this one, when Intel's price for Yonah and Merom at same clock speed is identical, just annoys people. At the moment this is still acceptable; Merom production is not a full capacity yet, and you can't expect Apple to update all products simultaneously, but in two months time MacBook sales would just disappear.

Smaller screen, smaller harddisk, integrated graphics, these are all things that people can accept because they save money. Using CoreDuo doesn't save Apple any money; that kind of gap would be just taking your customers for idiots. And I could not possibly imagine that kind of thinking from Apple at all.

hmm... but shouldn't they wait until 802.11n becomes more than just a draft of a format?

Apple seems to believe that the draft will be close enough to the final standard that any differences can be fixed with firmware and/or driver upgrades, without actually changing the hardware. Or at least that there is a good chance. So if the hardware doesn't add more cost or only adds a tiny amount, then they should go with newer hardware.

mb 15"?

Slap a Core 2 Duo in it, bump it up to a 15 or 15.4 inch screen and watch it become Apples best selling notebook ever.

:)

NOOOOO. not unless they come out with a 12" model in this new line of yours. some of us want our laptops truly portable!

impatiently waiting for my c2d macbook........

I'm getting a wierd "Can't connect to application instance" from the Australian Apple store. Haven't seen that one before.

Frankly I don't know if Bluetooth would solve the wire problem. But your point is well taken a wireless drive would have its own advantages. Something would be needed of course as I'm not dismissing the need for an optical drive from time to time. My big problem with optical hardware is that it increases weight and decreases reliability.

One obvious answer would be a mini Wifi server of one or more CDROM's. That sort of arrangement would certainly have the bandwidth needed. In either case you are making use of radio technology so that in and of itself is a power issue. On the other hand if the drive isn't in the laptop it can never be a power burden.

In any event I still believe that Apple would be better off putting Compact Flash or other memory device slots in its machines. They are already a better choice than CDROM's for many uses and of special interest to photographers and other professionals. The goal should be reliable low power operation.

So, I start listening to Security Now, move on to TWiT, end up listening to MacBreak since it began and am now into the iLifeZone as well. After all that, I'm still waiting for my first Mac. Kind of like hanging around the barber's shop - eventually you come out with a haircut!

I decided some time ago that my first Mac would be a notebook, then started waiting for the C2D in the MacBook. Looks like my patience may finally have paid off!

Looking forward to joining you all.

well, today looks like a no-go. it probably would have been announced by now, or the store would be offline... so, the wait until next Tuesday starts...

Would you buy a CD MB the day the C2D comes out for $700

No. It isn't worth pinching pennies when it comes to notebooks. I'd gladly pay the extra to get something that runs significantly cooler (which apparently is the case with the new MBPs).

I dont want new MacBooks!

I already have my MacBook so that may be influencing me but there is my gripe. There is finally a separation between the MacBook and the MacBook Pro. There is an obvious reason for why the MacBook Pro costs more. Bringing them both to the same level creates the same problem Apple used to have... many (including myself) can easily justify getting MacBook instead of the MacBook Pro because the MacBook does everything you need the Pro version to do.

Dude, that's the specs for the current Macbook.

Well, yes and no. The title of the page reads 'Core 2 Duo'. The page also states it's available to pre order, with a release date of the 13th.

Granted, the body of the page refers to the original Core Duo chip, but it's safe to assume that at least Play.com believes they have a new product to sell from the 13th onward.
