If this comes to pass - thousands of no talent graphic designers will finally get their shot.

Flat icons and layouts can be banged out in MS paint in about a minute. It's lame and reeks of no creativity.

A great hardware designer does not equal a great graphics designer.

Some of you arty types might want more splashes of color and skeuomorphism, but it makes the job of your visual system harder.
I'd rather have my visual system working harder to free resources from the brain trying to actually distinguish all the similar-looking things on screen, thank you!

I wonder if anyone has reached the point to where they say "I'm switching to Android!"

friend says "You already have an Android phone..."

"Oh yeah...well I am still switching! I can't take these Apple shenanigans anymore!!! ARGH!!!!! MY HEAD!!!!!!"

Same dude in person: Quiet as a mouse. :p

Nah, Android being that much more advanced than iOS is an exaggeration IMO. I'm not an apple fan boy, and like Android quite a bit, but having went over to them for the past 6 months and going back to my ip5 I didn't really see very much that was more advanced than iOS. Some stuff, like live widgets were very cool though.

I'm excited about the new flat direction, been running minimal miui theme and enjoying that for a long time, any change in this direction is welcomed.

I'm going to rich. I'm an expert in ms paint. Been using paint since windows 95

I occasionally eat out at different high end restaurants. Often I get a dish that I ordered which did not look as I expected, or at times looks like something I would not like to eat, or not enough if it.

However after tasting, it is usually some of the best and satisfying food I have eaten.

So experience tells me to wait and taste iOS7 before giving judgment.

Really? Since dumping my note 2 4 days ago I've found iphone 5 lacking. I find it bland and outdated.

This speaks to a life long mantra I have

Try Everything Twice.

First, to get over the fear or inhibitions you have, Second to determine if you like it or not.

it is amazing how many people will not try something new or different because they have a preconcieved bias and fear which will inherently affect their first use or perception.

How bout come up with a decent skinnable/themeable UI framework so people can decide what they want to use or create their own rather than ***** all over my computer/phone?

In general, you don't want people to do what they want, since the public is terrible at design, and by letting them do what they want, they ruin their own experience.

A good designer is better at giving what people want than even what the people think they want.

This is why the one should never allow the public to do what they want. We should never encourage the public, it only encourages their own bad taste. The public's bad taste should be repressed and hidden, and should never be allowed to surface.

Steve Jobs himself quoted Henry Ford, who said "If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses."

Basically the public is horrible at making decisions for themselves.

For me, IOS 7's radical change(if that) is not enough to prevent me from buying bigger screen based droid. I will consider both S4 and NOTE 3.. Hopefully by the time those are ready to be retired, apple has their act together and brings out an awesome phone.. I really hope so.

I'll be genuinely surprised if Apple releases a phone with a larger screen. They're a fad, not a trend. Literally, screens have just been in a race to be the biggest as of lately, and it's ridiculous. Samsung just keeps increasing the screen size for absolutely no reason. You can see a bit more content, sure, but you run the risk of making it uncomfortable to use. I have relatively big hands, and the GS4 is still uncomfortable to use.

I love the way the iPhone is compact enough to be used with one hand easily, yet big enough to display a good chunk of content. If I need a bigger screen, I go for my iPad. Once tablets become a staple in society, I can see the fad of large screens on phones nosediving.

I do think that iOS needs some major UI overhauls for things like multitasking and settings. I don't think the way Android does multitasking is very good at all, and I think/know that Apple could do it better. Here's hoping that they do!

Looks like you guys all have Apple figured out and totally know what they are going to do with iOS 7. You guys should all be analysts. :p

What about actual features?

That's why I'm not banking on this as truth, or at least full truth. It seems unlikely to me that these sources would only leak UI details and not features. Or that they have only see the UI.

I'm not bothered by the FaceTime app notion or the color schemes or lack of textures. I find the animations in the weather app curious as that seems the kind of skeuro thing that just bloats without real function and/or eats battery that Ive upposedly dislikes.

Which is exactly why Jony is NOT doing graphics design.....

What part of "providing leadership for the human interface team" do people not understand? First of all, human interface and graphics design are two completely different things at Apple. Second of all, providing leadership doesn't mean "hand drawing every design by himself."

What it means, is that the current team of human interface designers at Apple, who have been led by Greg Christie for a decade, will now be under Jony's direction instead of Forstall. Jony will give them a general direction to go, he will provide input, and he will say yes or no to their designs. But Greg Christie and his team will still be the people DESIGNING the user interface.

Its not hard to understand people. A leader is not infantry. Does the General fight alongside infantry? He provides the strategy and keeps the entire army in sync and all heading in the same direction. Forstall wasn't doing that. Based on rumors, Apples designers weren't all in agreement, many hated Forstalls direction. Jony will be getting everyone on the same page heading in the same direction. Jony is a much better leader than Forstall (who was divisive), and he will be able to get the best out of his teams much more effectively than Forstall. Jony is inspiring, he can get everyone to bust their asses much like Jobs could.

Great comment. I look at a good majority of Android devices and they all have low res images in the background with an ugly comic sans-esque font. It looks absolutely terrible. Stock Android, out of the box, looks reasonably nice in the present. Give a common person a few days and the thing is horrifying.

The majority of this forum seems to be in favour of flat design. However I don't think this will be well-received outside the Apple fanbase. Expect to hear casual users of iOS devices tell each other that "The new iPhone update is real ugly, don't get it."

Not too surprised by this. Kinda figured that when they said "flat" they meant basically black text on white backgrounds. I will miss the notepad look of "Notes" but, to be honest, I mostly use Evernote anyway which already is black text on a white background. I am mostly interested in seeing if iOS7 will introduce a generally more useful lock screen and home screen. The basic functionality and the way in which information is presented to the user has been out-dated for some time now and is definitely in need of an overhaul. I mean, can we at least get a Weather app icon that displays the actual local temperature instead of just the same static "73" all the time. The calendar app icon has been dynamic since day one, so I don't see why they couldn't do the same thing with other icons. The more I use Windows 8, the more I appreciate the live tiles concept. It would be nice if Apple allowed developers to display simple information via app icons or even went ahead and implemented full blown widgets that can be placed on the home screens along with the app icons.

That's really important. The same thing happens frequently in scientific visualization - colors are often picked because they look good instead of really focusing on the meaning of the colors.

Trouble is that color meanings are cultural. For example in western cultures black is the color of mourning, in many African cultures Red is that color.

For software design rather than understand the meaning of colors as they are viewed in general you have to pick a meaning and use it consistently. So like how delete buttons are always red, not sometimes red other times yellow. Same as good design does with icons.

Can Not Wait!

I've long hated the disgusting candy colors that seem to have appeared along the way! Having no wallpapers to having them was the tipping point. It went from classy to trashy in one update.

This is gonna be classy all the way with Ive. I just hope that he has enough time to do it right with no bugs, or at least no new ones that weren't there.

I just want to have all those textures and gimmicks stripped out like game center. Also I really hate how the task bar changes colour all the time when it should just be black all the time. I goes green, blue, grey, black and looks ugly all the time.

Bring it on.

What?

You're literally saying that a great graphics designer should use a ton of textures, glows, reflections, and shines? If so, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you're either a graphic designer over the age of 40 who hasn't moved on with the times, or someone who has absolutely no taste/skill.

Flat Icons and Layouts are easier to make, it's true, but that doesn't make them any less creative. Apple has always designed its hardware with a minimalistic style, which is exactly what flat design actually is. It is taking a UI and reducing it to the simplest form possible. It looks cleaner, more vibrant, and elegant.

Go ahead and keep on using your 1990's Bevel & Emboss while the rest of the world moves on.

While some are being jokingly sarcastic, I cannot believe there are people genuinely thick enough who believe the black & white comment means "monochrome".

Ive will be aiming for a consistent theme across iOS, something that it has sorely lacked, where each stock app has a "theme colour" (Green for messages, Purple for iTunes, Blue for App Store/Safari, etc) which will be reflected in the apps icon and its UI, mixed with this basic black & white interface.
