As far as Verizon is concerned, the Storm was a decent "iPhone killer", because it might have kept up to a million buyers from going elsewhere, perhaps from buying an iPhone. That's not chicken feed.

Ditto for the Storm 2 and the latest WM / Android phones.

I think there's too much emphasis on the App Store. Most people use four or five main apps, if even that many. Include the best and most common types with a phone, and stores are much less meaningful.

Too much emphasis, you guys want to downplay the app store because it's an advantage for the iphone. If an app store is not important why the heck is the competition rushing to get their app stores out there.

I love how u all rip this thing when its got far better specs than the iPhone. The slide out keyboard is much better because it doesn't take up screen space. I have an iPod Touch and can't stand using the keyboard. Stupid idea. Lets take up 30% of the screen with a keyboard lol. Why do you think the new phones all have slide out keyboards? Because its a better idea. Thank God I got it for free and didn't waste money on the iPhone with crappy AT&T.

One guy mentioned the software is 75% of the equation lol. Really? Most those apps blow. 100k apps, but only like 100 are worth anything. Stop fooling yourselves. Plus, the new phones will get their apps up too. Researching which are the best Apple has and matching it.

Apple did a great job but now the competition will expand on the iPhone and make a better product. Good for everyone. Hopefully Apple will respond, but I don't see them going with a pullout keyboard anytime soon.

Don't get me wrong, I love Apple, but the Touch and iPhone are just OK.

Accuracy, and you don't lose half your screen to the keyboard image!

I don't know why people have such a hard time typing on the iPhone. Once you get used to it, you can type just as fast on it vs. a qwerty. I can type like a fiend on it, and would much rather have the less bulky phone vs. a full keyboard bulky phone.

You are absolutely full of **** buddy. YOU don't like the iphone keyboard because YOU suck at using it. You don't speak for everyone.

BTW, if you haven't noticed - Apps are now the definition of how good a smart phone is. Its only obvious that the more apps, the better. That whole stupid comment about how only 100 or so are worth anything is ridiculous. Do YOU speak for everyone? The fact of the matter is that apps are what people care about and thats what iphone delivers.

You forgot the original iphones were 500 dollars, and it still sold a million units faster than the Pre and it was in only one country that sold a million units. How many countries has the Pre been released to and yet it still hasn't sold a million.

I think the Pre just came out or will come out in the next few weeks in Europe and Canada. So, we have to see how well it does in those respective places.

Did I say I spoke for everyone? Suck at using the iPhone keyboard? No clue what that means. Its just a touch screen keyboard, I have no problem typing on it. Oh, and the apps things. I stand by my comment. Most of the apps are not good. However, mb apps that seem worthless to me might appeal to other. Like turning the iPhone into a flashlight, crap like that. Lets say a tenth of the apps get 8/10 and the rest below that. I guess 100 is an exaggeration but u know what I mean. A small percentage are really done well.

Isn't this a bit hypocritical of you to say, that all people care about is apps? I would disagree with that comment, because I don't think everyone thinks about apps. Personally, I don't care much about app selection, and care more about phone/call quality, and if I can run multiple apps at the same time: like having a Adobe reader open, getting a file off the net via Opera, and listing to music all at the same time. I care more about that than app selection.

From the review and the Android website, the Droid has both keyboards. Honestly, I'd like that better (provided it was done correctly) because then I'd have a ton of space in landscape mode.

I watched the video's the review had and read a good bit about it, and this is great news. There's no way I'm going to AT&T with how much I hear about people complain about their horrible service. I've had nothing but great service with Verizon. I've been hoping for the iPhone, but honestly, after looking at the Android website this looks pretty amazing. Now I just hope the prices are low enough for me to afford come next year when I'm set to renew (else I'll just stick with a "dumb" phone like I already have). :)

Yea u make a good pt. Thats the other thing I was referring too. The quality of the service (calls/dropped calls) . The camera etc. I have this iPod Touch but still mainly use the basic features. (Web Browser, music, watching a video etc). I tried all these different apps but found that most were not needed or didn't really enhance my experience using it. Even my bro who has the iPhone mainly uses what comes standard. He has about 3 or 5 apps he's downloaded but mainly uses the the core elements of the phone.

External keyboard

Anyone know why Apple does not make or allow others to make an external keyboard for the iPhone?

Personally, I find the on-screen keyboard to be just fine for texting and quick e-mails, but unbearable for anything of length. In those circumstances, why can't I just bust out a small, fold-out keyboard and do some serious typing?

There are oodles of keyboards for Palms. Why none for the iPhone?

Are they afraid people would stop buying Macs or something? Really? Is that the reason I have to lug around a 5-pound computer if I want to do some writing away from home? Even though I have a perfectly good computer in my pocket? Just seems ridiculous.

Same here man. I have verizon and was waiting for any better option over the phone I have now. If there was no choice , yea I'd take an iPhone with Verizon, but these new phones would probably change my mind.

Ya that is crazy, 100 good apps? More like 15. Seriously they are all complete garbage and a waste of time.

Complete garbage... downloaded 2 billion times.

Maybe other people perceive some of them differently from you?

As far as I know, all the androids can use the same apps. I'm not getting your complaint about how many apps the droid will have, because there's already quite a few out there!

The iPhone is a regular consumer class phone, just like the Razr and Startac were, among other highly popular phones.

The droid is a smartphone, staying true to its smartphone heritage (hardware keyboard, several buttons, high end features).

Anyone with any sense would perceive it the same way as me.

I've personally downloaded at least 100, and of those maybe 5 were worth the time. People download tons because they are FREE. That is why there is 2 billion downloads. There is not big loss in download a bunch of junk, other than wasting your time.

For now.

Good luck maintaining compatibility and end-user experience across multiple Android platforms which include different screen sizes, hardware features, and input/button configurations. This is much harder than you might think when it comes to mobile phone development.

Don't believe me? Ask anyone who owns/owned a Windows Mobile Palm Treo how much fun it is when 99% of the "apps" out there are built with a different screen size/resolution than your phone supports.

If the iphone has 100 000 apps and only 100 000 are worth anything, then what about the other stores with numbers like 9000, 2000, and 300. I guess all their apps are worthless eh?

It's been out in Canada for like a month and has already been released in the European countries.

I love Tiger Woods on my iPhone -- user experience is fantastic and great for a quick game during downtime at court. Would you count that among your 15, or do you not like golf?

I have friends who are exercise fanatics and love the workout tracking apps -- do you work out? If you don't, you probably won't count that among your 15.

Etc.

Just because you don't like or need something doesn't mean there isn't a market for it.

Oh get off your apple fan boy high horse. Any moron can tell that a majority of those apps were made in half a day and are totally useless. I mean not even entertaining. Ohh, 150 different apps that make farting noises. Another 300 that check the weather.

Yes there are lots that may be good for some people and not others, but a majority of them are just worthless.

A lot of the apps are not free, and many of those are quite nice. They have a smaller audience, but they are not all junk.

That said, I use several free apps that help me out quite a bit.
  • AP Mobile keeps me up on the news
  • Epic Pet Wars sucks a ton of my time ;)
  • Twitterific gives me my Twitter fix on the road
  • Shazam has helped me ID dozens of songs I never would have been able to find again
  • Public Radio gives me my NPR-talk-radio fix when all I can get over the air is music.
  • Wikipanion gives me fast, easy access to the wealth of Wikipedia
  • Light has been the most useful of all. It helped me countless times. Way better than the light from the home screen.
  • Enjoy Sudoku is a great Sudoku interface. Better than paper or even than paid versions.
  • The Weather Channel has saved my butt more than once, showing me live radar of storms coming my way. Plus the hourly forecast is a great thing to have on the road.
  • MiniPiano has helped me work through a few ideas
  • iHandy Level has helped me level someting more than once
Hm. That's all that's coming to mind off the top of my head. But no, I most certainly would not call any of the above junk. They are all excellent applications. (Well, Public Radio does cut out too much, but it is certainly worth every penny I paid for it… zero.)
