does Apple have the patent on the on-screen keyboard? Why are people still using plastic keys? What's the advantage?

I like physical keys over touch screen. the ablity to feel the feels being pressed is very nice because then I know I hit something. Plus the being able to dial with out looking is nice. On my blackberry I can speed dial with out looking at the phone.

The fold would be a hardware point of failure, along with the keyboard. The iPhone has very few moving parts, which is good.

The slider would be a point of failure while true also look at the fact that by the point the slider fails chances are the phone will be well past it usable life span of 2 years. Keys last even longer. The touch screen would more than likely wear out before the keys would.

This is what kills me...YOU SHOULDN'T be doing that while driving, unless you have voice controls built into your car... You think you are good at it...guess what the person behind you disagrees...

Come one a lot of people speed dail in a car all the time. While texting while driving I think is crimal the calling on a phone is not going to stop. It just takes using better judgment to do it.
At least with physical keys (not that it matters with the droid) one can speed dial with out looking at the phone.

Now for text I will want a physical keyboard for anything more than a basic quite text and just wiping out the phone and poping out the slider for the keyboard is not a huge issue. I learn most iPhone users who bash it are trying to cover there own inadequacy trying to justify why touch screen only is the way to go. The ones that understand that no one way is better I think are by far more intelligent people.

As for the droid I think it is a good review of it. It is nice to start seeing some more andrioid phones coming out. It looks like we are getting close to seeing the 2nd gen Android phones coming out so they should have a lot of the first gen bugs worked out. I see a lot more potentional in the Android OS than anything else out there. iPhone OS I think is among the more limited and its potentional is coming to an end.

I was just talking about that with a coworker. Is there skype app for android? I hope the phone has a good speaker. moto phones have great speaker...iphone has a terrible speaker phone.

if they offer a data-only plan with this thing that can run skype voice and google voice, i'm actually sold.

I would pay 400-500 bucks for that thing and still save a bunch of money over the course of even one year.

it will only serve to motivate Apple to put out an even better product every year.

i hope next year's update is significant compared to this year's.

This years update was the most significant yet. For the next update I certainly don't expect them to more than double processing power and memory AND implement a new camera that is leaps and bounds better than the new auto-focus upgrade.

And I prefer touch screen over physical keys. This is a multimedia device that most people carry everywhere. Therefore, I want the biggest screen in the smallest device. All other things being equal physical keys cause at least one of the following drawbacks; size, weight, smaller screen size.

android is dead

Success will destroy android. we're already seeing an explosion of android devices as this continues it will destroy android. Why? Hardware inconsistency. The Android platform will soon be like the PC platform hundreds of different hardware configurations to support. One base firmware will no longer work as manufactures will add the own code to support their added hardware features. ( necessary to stand out in a crowded market) Upgrades will have to come from each maker. Development will become a mess as coders will not be able to depend on every phone having the features needed for their app.

Contrary to popular opinion Apple doesn't keep things simple just to screw you. They realize every added feature is and added support cost down the line that also slows down development. With no control of hardware Goggle can not prevent the de-evolution of Android caused by poor hardware design.

In the end we have a phone with software made by someone that believes they don't have to ever worry about the hardware design and hardware made by someone that believes they don't have to ever worry about the software design. That can only add up to trouble.

That said Android will kill off WM and palm quite easily and BB soon after leaving Apple and Android in the US market with nokia still strong in foreign markets

I don't get why more people don't get this...

I don't get why more people don't get this...

People (in dark corners of Apple fan sites) still seem to think the iPhone's success is an accident that defies explanation.

Apple is right. Every damn time. For some reason, people don't like to aknowledge this. Probably because they have some kind of aversion to putting a single company on such a high pedestal, as if it means they're somehow limiting themselves or are being closed-minded to other products. Well, the iPhone sure as hell does a good job closing our minds to other products. I see no problem with that, since the other products consistently fail to impress and I'm getting tired of giving everyone else a fair shake. Why waste time.

cause and affect

If anybody really thinks buying a droid is a good idea remember this. Without the iPhone today Motorola would be introducing the Razor V5.

Apple innovates because Steve wants to.
The other guys innovate because they have to, to compete with Apple.

Would definitely get this if I was on Verizon. I'd choose this over switching to an iPhone.

Did anyone else like the Lucasfilm Trademark mention of "Droid"? I was wondering if they had to ask their permission to use that name. :)

Steve Jobs "innovates" because he wants people to think exactly like he does and isn't open enough to accept other peoples' opinions.

At the same time. Apple fan are to blind to see any hope an anything but apple products. LTD is a prim example of this. post after Post of his bash everything non apple.

Why do the Apple fan boys fail to see there is a lot of potentional in the power of Android and not be limited by Apple Control freak ways. Apple control freak of the iPhone will be it undoing.

Not True

Hey Steve has admitted he was wrong at least once. I was there the day he admitted the round hockey puck mouse was a mistake. I also still have the Macworld edition Apple Pro mouse they gave away that day. Steve's only around .500 when it comes to mice. Hockey puck and mighty mouse sucked. Pro mouse was simple but good, magic mouse looks solid too (though I doubt most will use/enable all its features). Apple's major weakness has always been taking a good idea too far too soon. eg Lisa, newton, opendoc etc.

I STILL DONT SEE THE BIG DEAL ABOUT ANDROID! lol
i played with most of all the android phones out
i see nothing cool the apps suck so much!
and the OS is just plain and ugly i dont have an iphone or an android
i have a plam pre cause of family plan and i dont even like it
i used to have an iphone and it was the best i used it nonstop.
id like to see motorola make there own little UI.
the htc sense UI looks pretty snazzy
android=dull in my opinion and no hardware can fix that.

I am in the physical keyboard camp. I really don't have any issues with the iphone keyboard I simply just prefer the feel of the keyboard.

Since the Pre was released I ahve become a little more conscience of how I use the iphone. Jailbreaking aside, I could probably use any smartphone without any major OMG I absolutely need that.

In the end the most important thing is coverage.

There's a map for that! ;)

AApple control freak of the iPhone will be it undoing.

Except when that is the key to all of Apple's success, in every single area in which operates, from OS X to iPods.

Apple's "control" is the cornerstone of its entire business model. It can't be its undoing when it's rendered Apple recession-proof. It's what differentiates Apple from every single other manufacturer out there and what has made them THE company to follow. If you're breaking records and embarrassing the rest of the industry, you dont stop what you're doing.

Speaking of Apple's "control", here's the latest from Daring Fireball. As usual, Gruber nails it:

★ Herd Mentality

Conformity is a powerful instinct. There’s safety in numbers. You have to be different to be better, but different is scary.

So of course there’s some degree of herd mentality in every industry. But I think it’s more pronounced, to a pathological degree, in the PC hardware industry. It was at the root of long-standing punditry holding that Apple should license the Mac OS to other PC makers, or that Apple should dump Mac OS and make Windows PCs. On the surface, those two old canards seem contradictory — one arguing that Apple should be a hardware company, the other arguing that it should be a software company. But at their root they’re the same argument: that Apple should stop being different, and either act just like other PC makers (and sell computers running Windows) or else act just like Microsoft (and sell licenses to its OS).

No one argues those two points any more. But it’s the same herd mentality that led to the rash of Apple needs to get in the “netbook” game punditry that I claim-checked earlier today. I could have linked to a dozen others. The argument, though, is the same: everyone else is making netbooks, so Apple should, too. Why? Because everyone else is.

I think there’s a simple reason why the herd mentality is worse in the PC industry: Microsoft. In fact, I think it used to be worse. A decade ago the entire computing industry — all facets of it — was dominated by a herd mentality that boiled down to Get behind Microsoft and follow their lead, or else you’ll get stomped. That’s no longer true in application software. The web, and Google in particular, have put an end to that.

But the one area where Microsoft still reigns supreme is in PC operating systems. PC hardware makers are crippled. They can’t stand apart from the herd even if they want to. Their OS choices are: (a) the same version of Windows that every other PC maker includes; or (b) the same open source Linux distributions that every other PC maker could include but which no customers want to buy.1

Apple’s ability to produce innovative hardware is inextricably intertwined with its ability to produce innovative software. The iPhone is an even better example than the Mac.

It’s not just that Apple is different among computer makers. It’s that Apple is the only one that even can be different, because it’s the only one that has its own OS. Part of the industry-wide herd mentality is an assumption that no one else can make a computer OS — that anyone can make a computer but only Microsoft can make an OS. It should be embarrassing to companies like Dell and Sony, with deep pockets and strong brand names, that they’re stuck selling computers with the same copy of Windows installed as the no-name brands.

And then there’s HP, a company with one of the best names and proudest histories in the industry. Apple made news this week for the design and tech specs of its all-new iMacs, which start at $1199. HP made news this week for unveiling a Windows 7 launch bundle at Best Buy that includes a desktop PC and two laptops, all for $1199. That might be great for Microsoft, but how is it good for HP that their brand now stands for bargain basement prices?

Operating systems aren’t mere components like RAM or CPUs; they’re the single most important part of the computing experience. Other than Apple, there’s not a single PC maker that controls the most important aspect of its computers. Imagine how much better the industry would be if there were more than one computer maker trying to move the state of the art forward.

Agree. More junk. just like the Pre. It'll fail to live up to the hype and die out and quickly be reduced by 60% in price. Another iPhone killer, killed.

@trrosen Perfectly stated. I've got some apps on the iPhone and looked into porting them to Android. Even if I did the port, how am I going to test them. Can't afford all those phones, let alone all those carriers.

In fact, I don't even have an iPhone, developed them all on my iPod Touch. So, with an investment of $300 I was able to develop for 60 million iPhone and iPod Touch users growing rapidly. Many of the best (and worst) apps are developed by little guys.
