What I don't understand is, if you have the iphone on ATT and you are happy, why get on here and say I hope Sprint/Tmobile/Verizon don't get it. Who really cares if they do? Some areas are better on one carrier than others. I personally think all cell companies are no fun to deal with. From an apple stock holder, I would love them to come out with a verizon phone. Think about it, this year a cdma/3g phone with a bunch of new buyers. Next year a cdma/3g/lte phone with a bunch of new buyers PLUS the people that want to upgrade. It means a lot of sales. They did the same thing with edge to 3g on ATT and in a few years LTE on ATT.

I know! I don't understand it either. The only things I can come up with is either they feel AT&T has somehow became a part of Apple Inc. or they are worried the iPhone will become too successful.

Another explanation could be: current ATT customers are actually former ones of Sprint/Tmobile/Verizon. Why would they switch company? Most likely because of dissatisfaction. It look more of a vendetta to me, but it drives the world.

Throw the technology aside, I think the biggest issue is the corporate handling of Verizon & Apple.

The Apple App Store & Verizon contract subsidies could easily be a "war" in itself that may be the sole reason the iPhone may be delayed for Verizon.

The exclusivity agreement is going to be tossed out the door with AT&T, so leave it up to some bargaining agreements to be had. If Apple stays exclusive to AT&T, then I would educate some of their analysts on 'market oppurtunity'.

I still believe the iPad will be the first Apple product to offer Verizon services...

Exactly - what is the threat to current AT&T iPhone users if Verizon does get the iPhone? The only threat is to AT&T and the potential loss of some customers, so are all these people AT&T stockholders and that is why they feel threatened?

If anything Apple Stockholders should be pushing them to reach the rest of the American customer base, or explain why they don't feel they can/want to/blah blah.

Yes, they may have been rated last but Apple selected ATT and not Verizon because Verizon wanted to dictate policy, marking, and feature set of the iPhone. Now, it's going on three years and Verizon is still trying to get the iPhone on their network.

Apple will not build iPhone specific for the Verizon network because Apple prefers that the current iPhone should just work as is. It works this way when I got to Europe and it works this way when I'm in the states.

And you have sat in on all these meeting and know this to be fact?

What if it is Apple dictating certain things like price and such that is the hold up and not Verizon?

The fact is you nor I know why Verizon and Apple are not working together, in fact If you want a more accurate version, AT&T more then likely paid Apple a whole bunch more money to keep the exclusive contract.

One thing is clear through admission from AT&T is they pay a lot of money to have the iPhone, maybe Verizon and Sprint are not willing to pay what Apple wants.

It's a shame they can't be happy with what they have if it's good for them. Seems kinda sad. On a bright note, snow this weekend ... wahoo!!

Do you also love charging it constantly?

With my use patterns my charge lasts me the whole day and if I really need more battery time I at least have options unlike you, I can get bigger batteries that will last up to two days for heavy uses and in my case about 3 1/2 to 4 days.

Face it, Google and Palm will be building phones for 3 of the 4 networks, as Palm is just starting out with webOS I think their next phone design and the webOS will be much more polished, hell make that Google and Palm will be on all 4 net works soon, while Apple will still be tied to just AT&T.

I am not saying the iPhone is not a good phone, but Steve Jobs and Apple still refuse to give you things Google and Palm have given their customers already with their young Android and webOS systems.

Already Apple is starting to lose market share, and that was while they grew their share, that is not a good sign.

Google has the resources to take on Apple head on, Pam does not have those kind of resources but they have a very talented group of people who have come up with webOS that is a better solution then the iPhone OS.

At&t is really good. Maybe you don't get that well reception, but oh well. I don't get good Verizon 3G. Give at&t some slack bro. They still got months to improve their quality! Who knows what they'll do next. Also, it makes sense that you obvioiusly want an iPhone like every other vFanboy crybabies. Suck it up, and get the phone now. There is now way Verizon is getting the phone soon. Do the research! Don't rely on analysts. Btw, good luck with that Droid of yours. Can your phone pinch to zoom?

Actually Android can now pinch and zoom, just like Palm can pinch and zoom, not everyone wants an iPhone, it really seems like more of you iPhone owners really want to come over to the Verizon net work then their are Verizon customers who want an iPhone.

While Palm ans Google are selling their phones on all four net works you will still be tied down to just AT&T.

:apple:
PLEASE, PLEASE open up your carrier market!!

More iPhone carriers=more iPhone sales=better service for consumers=more profits for Apple=HAPPY PEOPLE! :D Simple economics!

Only techo geeks will do that and that is such a small number it is not worth talking about. It requires jail breaking and then cracking it and so on. Plus you do not get any subsidised cost. If you are not with ATT in the US apple is ignoring you.

Boy the truth stings. Apple is effectly not paying attention to 2/3 of the market. AT&T is not going to grow that much more. They will sit at their 1/3 market. I do not see them becoming the number 1 carrier any time soon. The smart people out there choose the carrier first then choose the phone. Most people I know choose what carrier they want then worry about what phone they can get.

Not with ATT or want ATT no go on getting the iPhone. Apple pays no attention to you.

My carrier is AT&T and no I do not have nor do I want an iPhone.
Apple limiting itself to just AT&T is going to cost them in the US. Android is taking hold and growing very quickly and now has coming to AT&T so Android phones truly have access to 100% of the US market. Apple just 33%/. RIM has access to 100% of the market. Hell the hated Window Mobile has access to 100% of the market.

I also would like to point out I do not like Verizon and never will use them. But I am not going to trolling and bashing them.

One more thing to consider, is that with AT&T's market share the iPhone is not really that big a player in their over all customer base.

Abercrombieboy where in SD are you?

I have done the research. AT&T is not even available in the state where I live so I am not sure how I could get the phone now. AT&T is trying to buy some of the old Alltel assets that Verizon was forced to sell after the merger in my state. If it is approved they will have some sort of a hodge-podge CDMA network with a little GSM roaming capability. Knowing AT&T you can plan on at least 24 months before they have converted the network over and it remains to be seen if it will be a statewide 3G network.

What would you do in my situation? Probably what I did. I have no faith in AT&T to serve the rural midwest the way Verizon has. AT&T has said over and over again they are only concerned with the top markets in the US. If they come into South Dakota and provide the same network footprint and 3G service quality as Verizon does I will eat my words, but I am not expecting it.

For those of you living in large metro areas it is easy to say we don't need cell service out here, but we do. A lot of rural customers have a very favorable opinion of companies that spend the time and money to make sure we are connected. If you were living in a rural area like me your opinion of the Verizon network would be much higher.

BTW - I really like my Droid. Thanks for asking!

I have been in Sioux Falls for almost 4 years and have been using T-mobile, granted when I first got here, data service was spotty, but now Longlines has very good edge converage in this whole area, so I have no problem with service and edge speeds are good. I was using an unlocked 2G iphone for two years until I got it wet, I am now using a Motorola Cliq which I think is an awesome phone! What part of the state are you in?

****

Yet, you can achieve the unlock and use it thru T-Mobile.

Do you even know what your talking about? Sorry but T-mobile doesn't have that hot of service either. People aren't going to unlock the iPhone to get it on T-mobile, I know people have but not that many. People want the iPhone on a network that gets service and isn't a pain in their ass aka Verizon. Also you said something about "check the AT&T subscribers," but what you failed to mention is look at all the people dropping AT&T like me. I paid the ETF to get out of AT&T because they are that bad.

And stop saying your tears are delicious... like WTF I am not crying about not having the iPhone on Verizon, I am simply waiting patiently and definitely NOT crying.

.

That's the problem with the US market, the rest of the world can always choose both the carrier that works best and the phone they like the most, and switch between them in whatver way they want

Actually yeah the Google Nexus One can pinch to zoom.........

"Google yesterday announced that it had begun to deliver over-the-air software updates to users of its Android-based Nexus One smartphone, offering a number of enhancements. Most notably, the update enables pinch-to-zoom multi-touch functionality in several core applications.
Pinch-to-zoom functionality: devices will now include a new pinch-to-zoom mechanism in the phone's Browser, Gallery and Maps applications

Google's Android operating system previously did not support pinch-to-zoom in the U.S., with sources indicating that it had agreed not to include the functionality at the request of Apple. The functionality has, however, been available in European versions of Android smartphones. As the relationship between the Apple and Google, has soured amidst increasingly direct competition, speculation of course centers around the possibility that Google now considers full multi-touch capabilities to be fair game in the U.S.

For its part, Google offered a weak explanation to ReadWriteWeb, claiming that until this point, the hardware was not sufficient to deliver adequate pinch-to-zoom capabilities in Android.
Looking around the mobile industry, from Apple to Palm to HTC and Motorola - it's clear that pinch-to-zoom technology has become a standard and popular way for users to interact with their mobile phones. Likewise, Android users can now truly benefit from this capability with the availability of Android 2.1, which powers a new class of devices with larger touchscreens and more interactive features. Unlike past devices, these phones have the processing power to deliver pinch-to-zoom, while still providing a great user experience. Based on these new capabilities and numerous requests from Android users, we decided to provide pinch-to-zoom capabilities with this new over-the-air software update for Nexus One devices.

Engadget has posted a video of the Nexus One's pinch-to-zoom functionality in action."

I live and work in the Lead-Deadwood area. We have two choices here. Big Red or Alltel (which is suppose to become AT&T someday). Verizon really is the only way to go in the Black Hills area if you want good coverage, 3G speed and a decent phone selection. A GSM phone in Western SD anywhere outside of Rapid City is pretty much worthless.

It's funny that people say AT&T can't afford to bring excellent coverage and 3G speeds to people who live in rural areas like I do. So how does Verizon do it?

I have had the same question. Why can Verizon do something for years, while ATT is still sucking wind. The answer is simple: Verizon has better planning and execution.

Did Verizon build out CDMA 3G in the Black Hills, or did Alltel do it and Verizon just bought them out?

Both Verizon and Alltel have built out their own CDMA 3G networks in the Black Hills. Verizon was forced to sell the Alltel assets to another company when they merged because it would have created a monopoly in South Dakota. AT&T has agreed to purchase the Alltel assets, but the entire Alltel CDMA network will need to be changed over for AT&T. Also the old roaming agreements with Verizon that Alltel had are out so AT&T will have to stand on their own.

Alltel has provided some roaming service for GSM carriers on their CDMA towers. Some of it is EDGE so I suppose they will try and use that network while they eventually change over the CDMA 3G network to AT&T's 3G network, but who knows how long that will take. The simpler route for a consumer in the Dakota's right now is just to go with Verizon. It's a proven network and it provides great coverage.

If you look at the last Consumer Reports survey on major U.S. cellular carriers, none of them can really brag. Yes, Verizon came ahead of T-Mobile, AT&T and Sprint but just barely.

Essentially Verizon is a 38" giant in a land of three-foot midgets.

Yeah, that was my point…they all suck in the end. Just grab the company that is better in the areas you find most important (big coverage map, cheap prices, customer service, whatever). NONE of them take top prize in all categories.

Yeah, I just don't get into the whole "fanboyism" thing. I just use what I like and what works best for me at that time. Windows/Mac, Chevy/Ford, PS3/Xbox, Verizon/AT&T, I just don't get it.

I think it's a way to externalize and reenforce the self-doubt we have about the decision we made. Something like an iPhone on a two year contract is a substantial financial investment for many people, and they're self-esteem can't stand the thought that maybe they made a bad decision, hence the zealous advocacy of the product/service they've chased in an effort to convince themselves and others that their's was the best decision.

But I'm not a psychiatrist, and I don't even play one on TV.

unlocking and GSM portability

Yet, you can achieve the unlock and use it thru T-Mobile.

Not with the latest firmware, apparently. And then you're stuck on EDGE anyways. This was a good solution for the iPhone 2G, and contrary to the statements of a few above, this seems to be much more common than "only a few people" with the older iPhones. And why not, if you don't care about 3G, T-Mobile has FAR cheaper service plans than any of the other services, especially if you've been with them for a few years. They don't seem to make you change plans if you upgrade your phone (according to my friend who still has his 10 year old plan with a brand new Nexus One).

CDMA is outdated.

Need to be using GSM or something like GSM that transports between carriers.

The voice and EDGE data portions of GSM transport between carriers, but at least in the US, the 3G frequencies don't. I'm loving my Nexus One, and the service on T-Mobile is actually okay after this weeks bug-fix update to the OS, but I'd still much rather shove my AT&T SIM into the N1. Where I live, AT&T's just got a better signal going.

Only techo geeks will do that and that is such a small number it is not worth talking about. It requires jail breaking and then cracking it and so on. Plus you do not get any subsidised cost. If you are not with ATT in the US apple is ignoring you.

No, not only techno geeks. Plenty of shops that will sell you an unlocked iPhone…but if you're not a techno geek you'll have issues if you crash the phone or upgrade the firmware, but that's what techno geek friends are for, right? I've got a few friends with unlocked iPhone's on T-Mobile that I unlocked them for. It's a pretty simple process…download the unlock app, run it, ten minutes later you're golden.

batteries, market share and control freaks

With my use patterns my charge lasts me the whole day and if I really need more battery time I at least have options unlike you, I can get bigger batteries that will last up to two days for heavy uses and in my case about 3 1/2 to 4 days.

Not fair - even iPhone users have options with batteries. There are some nice battery cases that sell around $70 which double or more the life of the iPhone. There are also dongle batteries that are much cheaper and smaller. The cases serve as protection and are very elegant. Perhaps not quite as elegant as a battery replacement, the dongles still offer iPhone users a way to power on the go. And realistically, you train yourself with any smartphone to just dock the darn thing whenever you're near a power source. I've got a dock on my desk at work, and a charger in the car. To quote Steve Jobs "it's not a big deal."

Already Apple is starting to lose market share, and that was while they grew their share, that is not a good sign.

Google has the resources to take on Apple head on, Pam does not have those kind of resources but they have a very talented group of people who have come up with webOS that is a better solution then the iPhone OS.

Count me as one market share they've lost in the iPhone market. The Nexus One surpasses the iPhone in both hardware and OS in almost all regards. It's here, it's now, and it's great. Apple's vaporware iPhone 4G may change the game in 6 months, but I doubt it will be leaps and bounds ahead of the competition like the last generation of phones were for a couple of years. I wouldn't mind being wrong, but on the other hand, as a bit of a hacker, I'm sick of Apple's lockdown, walled garden, control freak approach to my phone

It's pretty clear that the only reason Apple didn't go with Verizon instead of AT&T was that it was a battle of control freaks, and neither one would blink.

iPhone data plan.

I for one would like to have an iPhone with just the data plan! make that a choice!!
