this shows how much time, work and brainstorming was needed to find the best design.

Samsung : "We sold millions of copies of your designs but at one point during R&D you maybe thought about copying a Sony design..."

Best defense team ever?

Still it'll be pretty interesting to follow the suit to see the numerous ways this will become a train wreck.

Now when will we get to see Samsung's prototypes that led up to the ones that just happened to look like the iPhone?

It appears Apple is capable of designing phones that don't look like the iPhone, seems Samsung should be able to (GS III is a start).

And to think people compare the Zune to a brick.
Except one is a prototype and the other an actual model released to the public

For the OP: I do find it amusing that at the end after looking at many devices from Sony and others they went ahead more closely to resemble what they had created themselves in the first place. :apple:

This looks like it got birthed into a Nokia N9

I kinda like it.

And this kind of reminds me of a Nokia 8800

I still kinda like it!

One of them looks like the Lumia 900! I like the design. Prototypes actually look good, and you can definitely see their influence in recent iPhones.

Looks like Sony should sue both of them.

Nope. The "purple" design antecedes the "sony inspired design", so it's now obvious Apple didn't copy Sony. Furthermore to all those that claimed the iPhone was copied from other designs, like the LG Prada, they now have been proven wrong with the 2005 "Purple" design.

- "See, we thought of it first!"

- "No, we did, see!?"

- "Well, we DREAMED of it first!"

- "You copied SONY!"

- "Sony copied US!"

- "Well, Ms Cleo was our consultant, and she PREDICTED it first!"

This is getting ridiculous.

Which in many ways to show that Apple help killing it own Samsung copied us argument. It just proves that the entire industry was heading that direction on their own and independently.

Exactly.

How is anything going to be resolved when it's coming down to dates, idea's, and "who had what first"? Was corporate espionage involved? Apple keeps an incredibly tight ship on its design development and some phones were released very close with one another.

This constant back and forth serves no one aside from the millions paid to attorney's (patent or otherwise). It may also stifle competition and further advancements in technology if this game keeps up. I'm not getting into who is right or wrong either, yet the plethora of lawsuits involving Apple and numerous other companies is trifling.

who cares what samsung designed - the operating system is the issue.

Agreed. Yea, I doubt that Sony can even sue for Apple making a prototype. Also, it was probably not the first attempt on the smartphone. Heck, I can build a car looking like a Ferrari right now (legally, not financially) and as long as I don't sell it, I'm good. Apple also made that brick-like one. Guess, now the masons' guild will sue?

Wow ... a bunch of thin rectangles with a glass front. The designs are AMAZING! GROUNDBREAKING! ONE OF A KIND!

My same reaction to all the stories about the iphone 5, it's a rectangle with glass on the front. Why are some people so jazzed about this?

Well, if Apple gets there $2.5 Billion dollar settlement, and those offending Samsung devices bard from sale. Then those millions would be chump change, and totally worth the costs in the end.

Right, as Apple needs more billions in cash for... innovating iOS features into OS X. :)

(re: many threads on Apple's current lack of innovating products, as many believe Apple is coasting on their consumer success while keeping competition at bay through broad patents miraculously awarded to them, thus allowing Apple to go after anyone should they implement "Slide to Unlock" type features; what's next, patenting the mobile phone???)
