Perfect timing for Apple. Apple notebooks are very competitive and Windows Vista was a huge failure, so both of those in 2005 made it huge for Apple to attack.

Good Job Apple and micro$oft, LOL

What am I missing here when you guys imply that Microsoft is all about the money with that dollar sign, when the company you are defending is Apple? Apple is the worst when it comes to making money!

I really am starting to regret this iMac I just bought because of this community, as I sure as hell don't want to be mixed up with you guys. This worship has far surpassed cult status. I have started to believe that Apple consumers are less technically inclined and a bit mentally retarded. But I admire your skills in turning every news story to something positive against Apple (even security holes). Never would I have believed that Mac users would truly believe that their hardware is better and lasts longer than Windows machines even when using the same parts (and paying twice the money), how extremely unpleasant you were to the Microsoft representative who replied here to your Office questions, or how you justify all anticompetitive measures Apple does. You guys truly are completely clueless and out of touch with reality. I have said this before, but here goes again...
You are making it very hard for people to switch!

Couldn't have put it better myself.

Speaking of MS getting scared sh*tless, there was that one time when Steve Ballmer went apesh*t when he found out that Mark Lucovsky was leaving MS for Google. If one is to believe what hath been written on the wikipedias, Ballmer said, "F*cking Eric Schmidt is a f*cking p*ssy. I'm going to f*cking bury that guy, I have done it before, and I will do it again! I'm going to f*cking kill Google!"

Forget the sweaty-armpit stage performance...I would like to have seen that. :D
Not to mention, the ballistic hurling of the chair:

Lukovsky's statement says: "Prior to joining Google, I set up a
meeting on or about November 11, 2004 with Microsoft's CEO
Steve Ballmer to discuss my planned departure....At some point in
the conversation Mr. Ballmer said: "Just tell me it's not Google." I
told him it was Google. At that point, Mr. Ballmer picked up a chair
and threw it across the room hitting a table in his office. Mr. Ballmer
then said: "f*cking Eric Schmidt is a f*cking p*ssy. I'm going to f*cking
bury that guy, I have done it before, and I will do it again. I'm going to f*cking kill Google." ....

To date, he's done a hell-of-a-job, at that.

Agreed. Sadly, Xbox has been a financial sinkhole of epic proportions - more than twenty billion dollars “invested” for over nearly a decade, not to mention exorbitant amounts of managements' time and “talent.” If it weren’t for creative accounting, Xbox would still remain unprofitable for the next 6-7 years, and $6B-$7B deeper in losses. MS has lost over $5B with sales of the original XBox alone - no amount of trickling profits from here on in will ever come close to even slightly (sugar)coating the bottom surface of this massive deficit, not to mention, as you have, further losses due to the $1B+ warranty/recall charges - by no means does this represent a successful business model, by any standards.

xbox division is turning a profit, try again.

PS3 got projected to win the console cycle at the very end? That seems rather, odd

Welome to the hard core Cult of Mac. It's been alive and well since 1984 or so. It exists for the simple reason that Mac users have *something* to be excited about, all the time. Apple does exciting, compelling things. And they're basically the ONLY ONE out there doing them. Hell, you should be proud to be a Mac owner.

And this is a fan site, in case you didn't notice. The competing product to the one of our choice is going to get a bloody nose on a regular basis because they've consistently, since the 80's, made it really, really, easy. With every lousy, copycat, poorly designed product rollout, MS is a target. Who would you rather be associated with (now that you mention such a thing)? The company that in the Internet Age in 2001 released an OS with five open ports (Thanks, MS!), and the same company that after 5 years of development rolls out Vista, or a company that agomizes over every little pixel of an OS during development? MS couldn't even get a decent OS out the door in nearly nine years, and I'm including XP here.

You're judging your iMac based on the attitude of the Apple community (when the attitude and disdain MS has toward the average consumer is so obvious) - yeah, our karma will actually slow down your processor. But if you can't be happy that you're part of a different tech world now, then I'll gladly take your iMac off your hands. How much you want for it?

Nope. They're a silly fad product.

Ever notice how netbook screens are getting bigger? They've gone from 8" to 10" to 12" so what we really have is an underpowered laptop with a processor roughly equivalent to a late generation PIII.

Waste of bloody time.

Well said.

May I implore why you have to ram down our throats how we shouldn't use Windows, or how MS is terrible etc.? But citing the use of Apple products is something to go "so what" about? In the inverse, shouldn't you practice what you preach?

Do you really think that people are paid to post here? Who would even care?

He shouldn't. It's just a computer. And what are these exciting things you speak of, anyway? Nothing exciting came from Apple in the last year.

Who would you rather be associated with? A company that is anticompetitive (*hint* App Store *hint*), tells you what you can and cannot do and charges for basic functionality enablers or a company that is more open and releases some quality software nowadays (Office 2007, Windows 7)?

I dislike Microsoft as much as everyone, but compared to Apple they are way better.

And don't be fooled into thinking Apple releases perfect software. Forgot about MobileMe and iPhone 2.0 already? ;)

But if you can't be happy that you're part of a different tech world now, then I'll gladly take your iMac off your hands. How much you want for it?
Different tech world? I rest my case.

No, but we call them that anyway. They have their own vested interests - not necessarily monetary.

And we have another one.

Did you get lost on your way to Winsupersite?

tells you what you can and cannot do

This is more or less one of Apple's core principles - at least in the sense of OS X being locked on to Apple's hardware. I assume that's what you meant. In the broader sense there are good reasons for this. And frankly, Apple's been tellling you "what you can and cannot do" since Day 1, over 20 years ago. Apple has always locked their OS onto their hardware, whether it was OS X or something prior to that. Apple has always exercised more control over how their product is used, manufactured, and licensed (or not!)

For you to be going on about that like it's something new or that Apple *shouldn't* do that means you're in the wrong place.

Are you saying you enjoy OS X but are against Apple's control of it? Are you against only certain aspects of Apple's control over their own products? What exactly is "anti-competitive" about the App Store?

Is this true.

LOL, yes, it is.

I think this bodes well for Apple growth in the general market - the graphs shows market share increase of Macs in the people that will be shaping the future of business and industry. Students buy a Mac, students leave college with a Mac. Students enter the workplace with a Mac. The numbers will eventually begin to increase elsewhere also, even in spite of the short-term, limited success of the M$ ads.

As people realize that the "Laptop Hunter" ads from Microsoft point out the poor value of Apples, this will slide too.

That's an assumption - whether it's in your experience or not I can't say, but it cannot be stated as a fact.

xbox division is turning a profit, try again.
No amount of profit turning will ever come close to closing the gap of $20B+ investments, $5B+ in losses due to selling units at a loss, $1B+ in losses due to warrantee/recall charges. This was the point made previously.

PS3 got projected to win the console cycle at the very end? That seems rather, odd

It's not odd, it's just a very poor graph designed by someone with an agenda. The PS3 isn't going to rocket up in sales and overtake the Wii - that's laughable. It can be a good console for exclusive titles, but multiplatform games are better on the 360.

http://vgchartz.com, and thats after 3 years!

And people downvote all the time. I remember a few years back after Steve Jobs health improved and it was announced he would be presenting some Apple keynote, even such a positive thing like that got downvoted.

And we have another one.

Did you get lost on your way to Winsupersite?
If I don't worship Apple it doesn't mean I'm a Windows fanboy ;) It's not all black and white, you know...

This is more or less one of Apple's core principles - at least in the sense of OS X being locked on to Apple's hardware. I assume that's what you meant.
No, I'm talking about the iPhone and iPod touch. I can't customize anything or install "unapproved" apps like a Flash plugin or another non-WebKit browser. I don't like Apple deciding what's best for me.

Are you saying you enjoy OS X but are against Apple's control of it? Are you against only certain aspects of Apple's control over their own products? What exactly is "anti-competitive" about the App Store?
How about what I said before... not allowing competitive apps like other browsers?

And yes, I pretty much enjoy OS X and don't have any problem with it and its integration with the hardware. Because, well, I can decide what I do with it. What I have a problem with is Apple's smug attitude since 2007. They are becoming more "evil" than Microsoft, the company that any Apple user MUST hate or he's labeled a Microsoft fanboy.

BTW, you still haven't given me an example of an innovative thing coming from Apple recently.

Well, I see a lot of Mac's at my Community College, I hope that Apple will now give Pages the ability to insert and edit citations without the need for an outside application like Endnote. MS Office does this and I would love to be able to use Pages and dump Office.

I think MS is a long way from being dead. They have their fingers in a lot of pies. Also, I love my Mac, but Apple can be just as draconian as MS.

I'll repeat the mantra of many around here, that competition is good.

Also, the build quality has improved, but I have very few positive things to say about the build quality my first gen intel macbook pro (I was an early adopter - out of necessity).

I agree totally, and I really hope Microsoft releases something that is a real competition for Apple's current market growth. Unfortunately I have lost all faith in Microsoft's competitive edge, and I only expect them to continue to get cheaper and even worse in quality.

I do expect MS to die eventually, probably not for at least another decade or so. I am encouraging all the kids I know to learn Mac OSX because I expect they will need to know it as much as we now have to know at least basic Windows operations (with an ever increasing group of exceptions).

I really hope most of these replies are from kids being kids. I'd hate to think adults could be so brainwashed by a corporation that they act the way they do. Seriously some of you people need to find a football team and and root for them or go to church and worship the lord instead of a multi billion dollar corporation. You should be ashamed of yourselves, grown adults acting like spoiled children.
I'll buy the best product for the best price, I don't care who makes it. Blind loyalty to a corporation you don't even work for is stupid and should have no basis when making any kind of purchase.

You really think Microsoft with a 90% marketshare is going to fail?

But... I don't like football and Steve Jobs is my God.

Ok. Why are you here, then? This is a fan site.

We usually discuss Macs and Apple here, often to the *exclusion* of other things. This isn't ars technica or Neowin.

I think people around here *do* care somewhat about what goes on at Apple and what the company is doing, because Apple is directly involved in manufacturing the products we happen to like, LOL.

Either way, enjoy.

You really think Microsoft with a 90% marketshare is going to fail?

It's a very, very slow bleed. Microsoft is diversified and entrenched enough to stick around for quite some time. Their licensing scheme has created a galaxy of dependents. The entire IT industry exists in order to fix Windows and keep it running, and relies on Windows being the way it is to continue to thrive. It's an important relationship.
