Huh? It doesn't need explicit support for touch. If you're coding for touch you just have to not rely on mouseover events.

I was just replying to a guy who claimed that Apple does not support Flash on iPad because Flash does not support touch UI. At the same time he promoted HTML5 as a solution.

VGA support etc

Wireless VGA support, USB dock and and a camera.....in 2nd generation please. Can't afford to buy this twice, so will simply wait until it does what I need it to do.

And I was just replying to a guy (you) who seems to think that Flash on an iPad would be wonderful. To clarify (what someone who's got the hots for Flash should already know), it has at least two applications: embedding video in webpages... and online gaming. The latter is where the user interface comes in. The iPad has no arrow keys, no tab key, no "keyboard" really, no pointer coordinates, etc.

An Adobe Flash Developer On Why The iPad Can't Use Flash

Alright, so I bought an iPad and I love it. I've the dock and I use my wireless keyboard which does a great job of letting me type on it while at my desk while still giving me the portability to wander off and use the touch screen if I want to. All in all I am impressed with the device and see a great potential to utilize it in court and around the office.

Now, the down sides. I have an off-brand (I think it is Best Buy's generic) component video cable hooked up to my TV at home that can play video just fine from my other iPod styled devices. However, when I connect my iPad I get a "This Device Not Supported" message. Same message pops up in my car when I attempt to hook up the iPad to my stereo (not something I would really do very often, but I was curious). I find it frustrating that I have to replace things I already own, that already work with products from the same manufacturer...

The same is true for the Camera kit. I have an old SD Card adapter for my iPod. Won't work on the iPad.

Last but not least, the VGA out cable. I am accustomed to being able to plug a VGA cable into my computer or laptop and it sends whatever is on the monitor to another monitor. I wasn't expecting to be able to "extend" my desktop to the iPad, but I was hoping to be able to hook it up to the court room technology and allow whatever was on the iPad to be seen on the screens/projectors in the courtroom. No such luck. So far, the only time the display will come up is using the video app. This is useless for me if I want to show a photograph in an app that allows me to mark on it. Pages won't work either, which I found especially surprising as it is an Apple App and those usually are able to do more than 3rd party apps. I've messed with the settings and had no luck getting anything else through. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I don't think I am. If anyone has had any luck displaying through the VGA adapter please let me know!

Despite the setback of the VGA thing (which really sucks) I still find the device fits very well into my life as I am constantly walking and out of my office to meet with clients or attorneys. It is great that I can grab this thing and a legal pad and be off, with everything I was just working on in hand. Yes, I could do that with a laptop as well, but the flexibility and portability of this device makes it a little easier. If I could get the image to show up on my TV or through a projector for something other than "video" I'd be 100% satisfied with this generation, as it is I'm still 90% or so content with it, and I'm excited to see where they take the tablet technology next. Obviously a camera is coming (it has to if Apple intends to compete with the host of similar devices out this year with cameras come Christmas time). Beyond that, wireless display of data would be cool, and a dock with a built in card reader/usb port/video out all in one would be pretty sweet... so would native printing support.

In closing, for everyone questioning whether or not this can be a "laptop" or "computer" replacement. It depends entirely on what you use your laptop or computer for. In my case, as most of my computer use consists of reading documents, research on the web, and e-mailing, this device makes a perfectly suitable replacement. That said, I won't be using it that way, rather as a supplement to what I have, but if needed I could get by on just this. If you're doing process intensive stuff like programing or rendering, definitely not a replacement for you. For those concerned by the lack of multitasking, I can say that having used it now for a few days pretty intensely that the speed at which I can open and close apps and move from one to another it hasn't really been as big an issue as I expected. That said, it could be faster, and I imagine this will be addressed in 4.0 this summer. In the mean time I wouldn't let that stand in the way of purchasing one if that was your only hesitation. The biggest reason I can honestly see being cause to wait would be if you envision using the device for video chat (I think my parents would be candidates for that) and the lack of a camera is a compelling reason to wait for the next generation which will almost certainly have one.

Please either quote and respond, or PM me if you have any ideas/solutions about the VGA support for things other than video, or if you have any questions, I'm happy to answer them from my experiences with the device so far.

Thanks!

It sounds like the ideal computer in your case might be WIDI enabled convertible tablet. The convertible aspect works well for turning the screen toward the customers or in any other direction. I have no idea how well WIDI works in real life though.

It's nice to see something worthwhile from that site.

I don't know about that. Maybe for the iPad, but as far as I know the Palm Pre has Flash.

On a side note, I've been breathing in the vaporware over at Engadget, and that new HP slate smells mighty good. The wait for it to come to market could be months and it'd still be worth it.

I looked at some of the WiDi laptops that are currently available, Best Buy has three at the moment. None are Tablets, and each is substantially heavier than the iPad. If it worked, this sort of technology built in would be ideal, but again, only if it would display whatever was on the screen and not be limited to only displaying videos.

I don't know enough about Cocoa as a programming language, but it seems to me that if certain Apple Apps are able to output video that there must be a line of code somewhere than enables the signal to be passed... if this is the case then perhaps there is some hope that additional applications will include this code in their apps. Netflix, for instance, is likely to be something that most people would like to output to their TVs (although many who purchased iPads may already have this ability with PS3, Wii, or some other device). Guess we'll have to wait and see...

Cool! So, um, why are you still posting here exactly? By moving on, why don't you, you know, move on?

Because I'm the small petty-minded kind of person who likes to rub it in. I also have enough money to have unlimited amounts of free time to hang around and rub it in.

I'll be here dancing on Apple's grave saying "I told ya so."

HP Slate will be the iPad alternative to those who want what the iPad cant do.

Really, a laptop or full computer will be the iPad alternative to those who want what the iPad cant do.

This video was made to show off how great windows 7 touch is:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBtEhQqS1dw

While the user thinks he is showing how amazing Windows 7 touch is, for me it just brings the problems more sharply into focus. Windows 7 touch still thinks you are using a mouse. You can see the mouse cursor move around as the finger does. The windows are the same as they appear in windows 7 - with the tiny minimize and close buttons that are fine for a mouse, but not for a finger.

He is running apps that were designed for a mouse with his finger. And while it works, it doesn't work well. Because Win 7 touch is just win 7 with gestures bandaged on top of it.

It amazes me that Microsoft doesn't get it. Their win mo 7 based off of the Zune OS is wonderful. The mobile OS in general, as far as I can see, needs to do one thing well: consume media.

If I need to do work, I have to create media, and I have a computer for that. We got an iPad in the office today and I can say I finally get it. It won't replace a computer for those that have work to do. Not without some massive leap in input technology that is still years away.

But as a media consumption device, it is SCRUMPTIOUS. I will get one and leave it at home, where I can lounge and consume my news, music, video, and mainly games.

I'd go for a $199 Safari only iPad. It's surprisingly heavy.

I second that. I got to handle one at Best Buy today, and it's MUCH heavier than I thought. I couldn't see myself hand holding it for too long, and I see why Steve Jobs rested it in his lap during the presentation.

It's also not the best thing to touch type on. The portrait keyboard is easier to use with your thumbs, but that's tiring and a stretch after a while. The landscape one can't be used unless you lay the thing down.

The biggest plusses I've found with it are the screen and build quality. Other than that, it's still just a big iPod Touch . . . not that having a big iPod Touch is a bad thing for some.

p.s. Also, on the Touch optimized Windows 7 thing, right, it is awful. I got to experience that at Best Buy as well, and it's the most inaccurate things I've ever used. I was trying to use my finger as a mouse though, so maybe there are apps that are built in that are better suited to be touched.

The font rendering and page scaling works very well for web browsing. I wasn't too enticed by iWork on the iPad. After a few minutes I realized it would be a pain to make or edit a Keynote presentation with the keyboard taking up a lot of space. It should act more like the Dock and rescale or force application size if possible. Otherwise I don't want to type more than one sentence at a time with the keyboard up.

I'd be content with a browsing only tablet with good plug-in support. I found Safari to be my favorite application out of all of the on the demo model. Even with games and iWork. Scaling iPhone sized applications up was just plain ugly.

I tried out a HP Touchsmart and I loved the handwriting recognition. Treating your fingers like a mouse pointer is still too wonky for long term usage.

I'm really not sure what people were expecting when it comes to weight (and why it's such a common talking point). This is a 10" glass screen we're talking about - with enough onboard battery to power the thing for 10 hours. Were people hoping it would float on air?

I handled one at Best Buy as well, and no, I couldn't imagine holding one with one hand for extended periods either, but I didn't have such unrealistic expectations. I typically don't hold a book with one hand for extended periods either. The one-hander category belongs to the iPhone/iPod.

I imagine the iPad will get slightly less heavy with future revisions, but surely never light enough to make everyone's wildest dreams come true. It's what, only 5 ounces heavier than a plastic-screened, plastic-bodied 10" Kindle that does about 1/100th what the iPad does?

How I learned to stop worrying and love the Ipad.

How I learned to stop worrying and love the Ipad.
By- Josh Frank

So here is why I waited in line Saturday morning at 7:30 am to get the Wi- Fi enabled Ipad (32 gig) version.
The reason is simple, all the reasons not to get it, have solutions that in the end make it…

a) Unnecessary to wait for later versions and…

b) have creative workarounds that make the Ipad an even more important and attractive device for doing everything you need to do with a computer and MORE.

So I have decided to list the reasons not to get it along side the solutions that invalidate the reasons not to. Make sense? Ok, lets go…

Reasons not to get the Ipad-

1. The first version has no 3G only localized Wi-Fi!

It is a moot point. 3g is slow. It’s yesterday’s technology. Within the year all phones and PDAs will be running the super speedy 4g . More importantly at this very moment you can have a 4g Ipad!
Sprint has a 60 dollar a month hotspot bubble you can carry around wherever you go and clear has one for $40! Only 10 dollars more then atts Ipad 3g service! Also by getting an exterior “Hotspot” you can Use it with your regular laptop and Iphone making it a multi-purpose hotspot Not just a extra expense that only caters to your Ipad. Deal breaker Averted!
See them here…
http://tiny.cc/n0agw - Sprint
http://tiny.cc/f0ghk - Clear

2. Keyboard dock doesn’t even come out for two more weeks and it’s big and not very portable.

Enter the mini Bluetooth Mac keyboard. Super cute, the size of a laptop keyboard display runs on two double aas and communicated with Ipad. 10 dollars less then keyboard dock, multiple purposes so it works with all your Bluetooth enabled computers not just your Ipad and it is available now for 10 dollars less then dock. Buy the Ipad stand basic doc and you have a even more portable computer!
3. It’s not a portable computer. It can’t replace my laptop.

Oh contraire! Welcome to the wonderful new world of Ipad apps! This was the big holdback for me at first. Can I really do everything I do with my MacBook on the Ipad so I can just take my Ipad with me to work at my office/ coffee shop.
The day that I will remember for as long as I compute is the day that apple announced it’s word program app for Ipad and final draft announced my scriptwriting program app for Ipad. These are the programs I use for my work and it made it Clear that over the coming Months every program one Might use on a computer would be translated into a app for the Ipad.
With app’s there is no limit to the programs you will have access to on your Ipad, making it a true mobile replacement for your laptop on the go.
4. No flash!

I spit on your flash! Most major websites and already CBS and a few others are switching to the far more reliable hgml5!
5. It only has up to 64 gigs of memory!

Hello netflix streaming, slingbox (your home dvr, cable and apple tv anywhere device), hulu app (for watching network tv on the way) and Cloud computing! These wonders will make it so that you do not have to store all your hard drive eating media on your Ipad you can grab them from the heavens and watch them anywhere!
6. No camera!

Ok a tough one however I am fairly certain that within a few Months you will be able to add on externally or send it in to have one installed once the new iPhone comes out with iChat or you can just use the far more portable Iphone 4g.
7. No USB

Keeping in line with the trimmed down MacBook air. The gods at apple know something we don’t. Within a fortnight or a bit longer we will be able to do everything thru the air. We can already print, download files, and programs thru the air and even save our hard drive to a place in the clouds and transfer files to other phones and computers via Bluetooth and of Coarse email files. If you must add media to your Ipad from a external device on the go and don’t have a computer at hand you can use their camera kit to upload media directly to the Ipad.

So there you are, 6 months of creative problem solving thru thinking outside the box solutions that talked myself into an Ipad by eliminating the reasons not to get an Ipad.
After spending a few hours with it it is clear that it is an innovative creation once again, ahead of it’s time. Over the coming months I believe more app’s will be added that make it even more of a replacement for your laptop on the go.

Using it is like figure skating with your daily chores, workload, media, art, and daily life. It truly is a new way to interface with your computer life.

The end. Bye Bye.

so really... what is it?

Although I'm an Apple fan... bought the first iPhone, then the 2nd and 3rd.. I have a current 15" MBP 2.8ghz...blah blah blah.. So I pre-ordered my iPad and received it last Saturday. For some reason I couldn't justify opening it until Wednesday night because I wasn't sure what I'd use it for... but I opened it. It looks beautiful and sexy (first time I've used these words for something other than describing a woman) but after just a few hours I found myself struggling to find a use for it. Too many times I had to go back to my Mac to get stuff done... and I'm not an industrial user... just a student. Didn't touch it yesterday and this morning once again I looked at the home screen for several minutes trying to figure out what to do with this thing... Well, I returned it and decided for the first time I'd sit this one out.. for now at least. I can definitely see uses for this device... older computer illiterate folks, kids on road trips, people who travel a lot... just not me.. And I really tried to come up with an excuse to keep it, a reason to keep it.. what is it?

It really is a lot heavier than I expected. I guess I have become accustomed to my Kindle 2 so this was noticeable. The iPad has such a beautiful screen for displaying pics. Would be useful for client meetings to display a digital portfolio.

Typing wasnt fun but Safari with flash would make this a more attractive device for me. It certainly is an attention grabber.

I love mine. It plays all of my music and shows all of my pictures (6000) all day long.

I bought an acrylic picture frame for $4.00, that fits it perfect.

Oh, and I made it a bag out of a leg from a pair of jeans. All I had to do was sew up one end. :D

Isn't it obvious?

1. It's the "computer" for idiots who don't know what a computer is.

2. It's the "computer" for idiots who have nothing to create.

3. It's the "computer" for idiots who feel a pathological need to support Steve Jobs in his mentally declining years.
