On the fly?
Don't we already get that? - Pop another region disc in and it asks to change and does so accordingly.
Would this mean an end to the 5 time limit? - I really hope so

Don't think so, but it would be awesome...this whole region thing reeks of cartel and anticompetitive practice anyway, apart from the obvious aggression to the right to use something legally owned, regardless of the place of purchase...I really hope DVD Player turns region-free.

leopard looks like its going to be a nice evolutionary step, nothing really revolutionary but definitely worth an upgrade.

My only question if the full screen quicktime is supported, what's the key going to be for, just for the added encoding maybe?

You have no idea what you are talking about, do you?
Don't bother, no you don't... but it has been answered anyway.

Region free

This is such an important feature for travelers. The movie studios are insane for thinking that making discs region specific offers protection. Most countries offer region free players knowing that DVDs are released at fairly uniform times these days and it sure as hell does NOT stop piracy. Apple has never been fair to consumers in this regard and the 3rd party soft/firm-ware workarounds rarely get updated. Windows users are able to avail themselves of all sorts of means. It would be interesting for those who have Windows installed on their Macs to know if they have been able to "free" up Apple's DVD players?

Anyone tried?

Don't be so rude please...anyway, what is revolutionary for the average-joe Leopard upgrader?

Hope this does mean the death of QT Pro. Being downgraded from Pro if you installed OSX with a new version of QuickTime was a bit ridiculous; plus when you consider the functionality it provided it was hardly worth it.

The HD DVD support isn't exactly a surprise but it's good to have more confirmation. Good to know I'll be able to watch HD-DVDs without having to fire up that wind-tunnel of a 360!

AppleInsider reports that this configurability extends even into Dictionary.app, which can now use either the built-in Oxford dictionary or Wikipedia.

Thats cool.

Whats more cool is the definition of words pops up in a Spotlight search. Hopefully this means Wikipedia results in Spotlight?

As much as i like Wikipedia I hope not, people put too much trust in the accuracy of Wikipedia's articles.

I think you missed the part about it being optional. You set the default of what service you want to use.

WOW! Full-screen QuickTime playback without Pro!!!
This is GREAT! (By the way, I've been frozen in a block of ice for the past five years.)

Free full-screen QT is great! I bet Pablo was getting sick of everyone using his code...

Well done for that, finally Apples removing their bad things. They are FTFF, and making Quicktime full screen, it's looking good, except for that damn transparent menubar, it better be optional.

I am looking forward to the new DVD player. It is horrible now.. been using VLC for DVD for awhile.

Nope, i was saying that i hope apple don't add wikipedia results to spotlight as this will further entrain the misplace trust in the accuracy of wikipedia.

For some reason, this isnt computing with me. What does this now mean for me? (As an Adium user)

i think and i hope it means something along the lines that you can set Adium as your default client. but when queued for a video chat ichat opens up. at least i'd hope for it to work that way. but i could be totally off.

good to see the HD DVD and BluRay support, even if those drives are a while coming standard yet.

hopefully more things will start to trickle through :)

ok if you say so

what is revolutionary for the average-joe Leopard upgrader?

exactly not much :)

Even zfs (which may not even be in the final release of 10.5.0) is evolutionary, its not revolutionary, all it does is store data in a digital manner, yes it does it in a different and more efficient way but thats not revolutionary, its evolutionary, things have been optimised and improved.
Can't really say there's anything else thats a major stand out feature for the majority of joe public type users (note forum users are not really joe public are they), especially from whats been released to the public.

Quick look, well its sort of there already, just added more support and glossed it up abit and spaces well thats been around for ages via plug ins etc.

The other under the hood improvements are evolutionary too, nothing new about it, just improved. A lot of the things released so far are eye candy and under the hood.

iChat?

Yahoo IM? I'm not sure if iChat supports it or not as I rarely use it because Adium is fantastic, but it would be a nice addition.

I read the new quicktime also features something like the video playback on the iPhone when you can set it to 'fill the screen'. what I mean is it will chop the sides off so that you top and bottom of the video hits the top and bottom of the screen.

It's niceee

Well thats rather selfish. I want them and im sure countless others will, if anything for the breadth of information Wikipedia offers per result and the links to other sources. And im glad Apple is giving users the option of choosing their source for definitions and such. If you want to keep Dictionary.app as the default, then thats fine. We cant be upset that Apple are giving choices.

I would be surprised if the Apple DVD Player was indeed region-free. How could they pull a stunt like that? Movie industry would be all over SJ if it was true.

While we're at it, I don't see why you north-american people are so concerned about the region thing anyway. MOST of the stuff is released first as region-1 discs and the rest of it is usually region-6 (all regions) anyway. That whole region mess is annoying outside US but what do you care?

I welcome the full-screen Quicktime though ;)

You do realize that this DVD region system is also on windows, right?
