I don't like this design at all...

The back looks cluttered with those two glass bits.

I am actually pretty sick of the metal band design.... It's time for something new and this doesn't look good to me.

Everyone who says the backplate is ugly is absolutely wrong... Because there is no backplate.

Ladys and Gentlemen, this is the first unibody iPhone. In the Macrumors picture, you can clearly see that the back and the sides of the black model are the same colour/finish, and there are no seams. The white model seems different, but that's probably because the lighter aluminium of the back came out so yellow in the picture.

Very cool.:D

Semantics.

Back plate, back of the unibody. They think the back of the phone is ugly.

Why is this hilarious?

Because normally I'd look at a design like this and think "no way would Jobs approve something like that." Now that he's gone, all bets are off. Not believing this design is legit anyway.

As many others here have stated, if these photos are real, this is a prototype and likely not what the finished product will look like. Did anyone catch the story of the prototype iPad that went up on eBay the other day? It had squared edges, a totally different speaker design, and two dock connectors, for Pete's sake!

Just take a deep breath and relax.

Looks exactly like the first generation iPad.

Oh I don't doubt it will be more refined and primed up for public release. But it seems pretty clear to me Apple is going with partial aluminum backing to make room for more in a thinner design.
That's why I can't form an opinion on this. It seems too unfinished to me. Like the start of something but not quite there yet.

i have to laugh when I see people hating the new design. You do realize its just a slightly larger version of the i4?

The 4 design is two years old.

If this is what Apple puts forward form a hardware perspective, they're getting left in the dust by Samsung/HTC. Apple is approaching the point that they'd rather follow on the hardware side and cash their checks from the software/ecosystem side. How very Microsoft of them.

Thanks, I just saw that. Weird, a full aluminum back doesn't make sense.

(The trim around the outside on the previous models wasn't the entire antenna. It was just part of the antenna setup. The other parts inside still required radio transparency such as the glass case back.)

There should be more space inside now so that they probably could re-arrange things a little to place those antennas near the remaining glass/plastic areas. I believe HTC has had unibody phones in the past with small openings for antennas. Probably it could be done. As I mentioned above, the rigidity might be an issue with increased size. The metal back could be needed to keep things together.

A new iPhone has to be coming sooner rather than later. I've never seen such distinct iPhone leaks so far in advance. *FINGERS CROSSED* for a June announcement, and July release! :D

No, it's slightly larger and significantly uglier.

Keep in mind that usually perception changes once you've actually seen it in person. I hash this a lot, but its a true statement. Remember the 3rd gen iPod nano (fatty) everyone despised it. Then when it came out it was the most adorable iPod to date IMO.

That thing is hideous. Completely and utterly, downright disgusting to look at. I hope the Queen repeals Ive's knighthood if this is what gets released in September/October.

Fortunately, the leaks are far enough out from launch to suggest they should be taken with a grain of salt.

I'm on the fence regarding whether this is the final design or a prototype. A leak is far more likely when parts are being mass produced (in the millions) versus a few hundred quantity of each prototype (small team of factory workers).

It is easier to identify the person/people behind the leak of a prototype part.

The "leakers" get better and better.

youre kidding, right? :)

You wont find more slippery phone on market then iP4.

That's just cause of the glass... not the shape of the phone. I love the slab look of the phone. Not a fan of curved backs. Doesn't feel as modern or sleek when there are curves on the back. That's subjective though.

The speaker/mic grill on the black looks plastic from the photos, clearly not when you see the white model. But just they way they looked seemed plastic.

Otherwise very slick design and headphone jack on the bottom is nice as if you have the phone in your pant pocket while the headphone is plugged in you always pull the phone out upside down. You need to pull the whole phone out and flip it around to see it properly. While with the jack on the bottom you just pull out and look and put it back. It's not a HUGE deal... and I'm sure a few of you will say... "you're lazy" but it's the same concept as the "upside down" Apple Logo that was on older Mac laptops.

I had an iPod Touch for 4 years before I got my first iPhone and it's just more intuitive (at least for me) to have the phone upside down in my pocket.

Uhh, that's EXACTLY what the iPad looked like, minus the second dock connector.

Agreed, if this is what they're doing with the iPhone... than they've lost their touch.

Funny. Seeing those pics for the first time I thought maybe I'll buy a white phone. :) I think the two materials look classy.

I HIGHLY doubt they are going to change the dock connecter like that or make the back look like the picture. Apple does NOT do things like this no matter what anyone says.

Isn't it now law in the EU that all new phones have to use micro USB to charge?

Longer and not wider will have me looking at a different phone come fall...

For most, this makes little sense. First, Apple can't change the width very much without making the phone more like a tablet. Android phones do not increase the pixels per inch for bigger screens, which leads to a degradation of image quality the larger the screen. To call the phone a retina display, Apple has to carefully mange how it increases the screen size.

Second, Apple is only going to offer one screen size. So, the width has to fit the most amount of people comfortably in their hands. Height is less of a factor for comfort, than width, and arguably the width of the iPhone is already perfect.

Third, I do not know about you, but I have a whole Apple ecosystem with Apps, Apple TV, and Macbook. Switching platforms would depreciate the tight integration of this environment.

I prefer the phone to feel comfortable rather than modern. :)
