Semantics.
Back plate, back of the unibody. They think the back of the phone is ugly.
Isn't it now law in the EU that all new phones have to use micro USB to charge?
Actually I think the white is a fake. It has no FCC markings like the black one. And if you resize and zoom into the black one, part of the n and all of the e in "iPhone" are missing. Seems suspicious.
Pretty sure there's a loophole if you include an adapter.

Not really.
In real life, you judge the looks of a phone as a whole. You hold it in your hand, turn it around. When the back and the sides are a seamless piece, it makes the whole design more simple and more essential (to use one of Jony Ive's favourite terms).
Also the logo as a slightly different finish on the same metal plate will look extremely cool and subtle.
This is real, and gorgeous.
that's assuming this was designed by Apple in California. It's also missing the usual "Designed by Apple in California..." marking.
Hilarious how the flash, camera and mic are positioned like this:![]()
Why is it more likely this is the real deal and not just one of many prototypes?![]()
Keep in mind that usually perception changes once you've actually seen it in person. I hash this a lot, but its a true statement. Remember the 3rd gen iPod nano (fatty) everyone despised it. Then when it came out it was the most adorable iPod to date IMO.
I wish Apple would have went the route of micro USB instead of another overpriced proprietary connector.
I don't understand the placement of the FaceTime camera though, they wanted to make the screen taller right? So why would you place the camera on top of the speaker, that means the bezel needs to be bigger at the top :S

Sort of. You can achieve this requirement by supplying an adaptor.
The iPod nano (fatty) is still despised and considered to be a design blunder though. It was not well received.
This has a taller (but not wider) display at or close to 16:9 yet still not 720p, the back is just awful with mismatched colors and materials and the top and bottom strips don't match the height and placement of the ones on the front, the speaker holes look primitive, etc. In all it's just very "un-Apple" like in terms of design. I worry about what this means for the MacBook Pros and other Apple products going forward.
The 4 design is two years old.
If this is what Apple puts forward form a hardware perspective, they're getting left in the dust by Samsung/HTC. Apple is approaching the point that they'd rather follow on the hardware side and cash their checks from the software/ecosystem side. How very Microsoft of them.
The way you hold your phone, drop your arm to your side and slip it in your pocket, the phone is always upside down, making the headphone jack on the bottom really reasonable as a design decision.
I did a couple of overlaps to see what it looked like. The phone is definitely taller from what I can see, however, the screen looks to be the same aspect ratio. So ~4 inch screen and taller iPhone with headphone jack on the bottom, here I come!![]()
