Semantics.

Back plate, back of the unibody. They think the back of the phone is ugly.

Not really.

In real life, you judge the looks of a phone as a whole. You hold it in your hand, turn it around. When the back and the sides are a seamless piece, it makes the whole design more simple and more essential (to use one of Jony Ive's favourite terms).

Also the logo as a slightly different finish on the same metal plate will look extremely cool and subtle.

This is real, and gorgeous.

If this is the real deal...

My educated guess about the strange 2-tone back is that the entire backside of this design is part of a new amplified antenna. If you look closely, it lines up perfectly with the old antenna bands from the iPhone 4/4S. Thoughts?

There's no way they change the dock connector WITHOUT making it magsafe. Otherwise there'd be no purpose.

You're blind devotion is sickening. I bet you have a picture of Ive tattooed to your butt.

Personally I'm not really loving the design of this iPhone.. Doesn't look horrible, but just not a huge fan of it..

I wish Apple would have went the route of micro USB instead of another overpriced proprietary connector.

Why is it more likely this is the real deal and not just one of many prototypes?

Well, we've heard so many rumours in the past couple months pointing to the new elongated design it just seems to mash up perfectly. I'm also confident that the pictures dont do it justice and that it'll look great in person. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but the only part leaks that I remember that were this significant were pretty much spot on, aside from the leaked 3rd gen iPod touch casing showing a camera hole which did turn out to be a prototype.

Keep in mind that usually perception changes once you've actually seen it in person. I hash this a lot, but its a true statement. Remember the 3rd gen iPod nano (fatty) everyone despised it. Then when it came out it was the most adorable iPod to date IMO.

The iPod nano (fatty) is still despised and considered to be a design blunder though. It was not well received.

This has a taller (but not wider) display at or close to 16:9 yet still not 720p, the back is just awful with mismatched colors and materials and the top and bottom strips don't match the height and placement of the ones on the front, the speaker holes look primitive, etc. In all it's just very "un-Apple" like in terms of design. I worry about what this means for the MacBook Pros and other Apple products going forward.

I don't understand the placement of the FaceTime camera though, they wanted to make the screen taller right? So why would you place the camera on top of the speaker, that means the bezel needs to be bigger at the top :S

I think these look okay. A refined "4" look wouldn't be such a bad thing I don't think. As for the placement of the camera it might just be possible that the front camera unit is smaller than the proximity sensor unit, which in these examples I would assume to be offset to the side in place of the camera. This could allow then for a slightly thinner bezel, as the bottom bezel does look tighter around the home button.

I wish Apple would have went the route of micro USB instead of another overpriced proprietary connector.

This would be nice, but without a proprietary connector, wouldn't it be easier for Chinese off brand companies to make unlicensed accessories without paying the big A royalties?

Really? The Product Red iPod Nano fatty was my favourite iPod that came out of their factory. It was beautiful. ... in my opinion :p. I do have to admit though, these leaked designs seem very.. Sony Vaio

The 4 design is two years old.

If this is what Apple puts forward form a hardware perspective, they're getting left in the dust by Samsung/HTC. Apple is approaching the point that they'd rather follow on the hardware side and cash their checks from the software/ecosystem side. How very Microsoft of them.

This is ridiculous. Samsung hasn't come out with anything remotely original. Have you even held a competing Samsung handset in your hand? The phones are made of cheap plastic. The screens are bigger, but the design still is a modification of the iPhone design (rounded corners, etc. ). Nokia probably is the only smartphone company other than Apple that actually makes a quality handset.

More importantly, you don't change a design that works and is selling. You can tweak it, but radically altering doesn't make sense. Look at the Volkswagen Beetle. The design has been around for 80 years. Many people like it. The same is true for something like a Rolex Watch.

Apple merely needs to tweak the existing design to improve perceived shortcomings. The last phone doubled the performance of the last model, without sacrificing battery life. Design is more than about just the look of something.

The way you hold your phone, drop your arm to your side and slip it in your pocket, the phone is always upside down, making the headphone jack on the bottom really reasonable as a design decision.

And easier to pull out, double tap and use music controls without pulling the whole phone out.

I did a couple of overlaps to see what it looked like. The phone is definitely taller from what I can see, however, the screen looks to be the same aspect ratio. So ~4 inch screen and taller iPhone with headphone jack on the bottom, here I come! :)

Thanks. These mockups are why I view every page of these threads.

I think only the center metal part is finished, the top and bottom parts will also be metal in the final version.

Unibody iPhone !!

Calling an instant straight off the bat BS on this rumour, because the source is not reliable, and I guess looking at that deign the ariels are not built into the surround which would make the iPhone the WORST performing wireless signal handset on the market.
It would be rubbish, so can anyone see if I am wrong and the ariels are actually fine? Because metal is the worst material for signals.
